SummersRadio™ New Remix vs Classic Remix! Chemical Brothers!

SummersRadio™ New Remix vs Classic Remix! Prok & Fitch vs Juan Kidd - 'Star Guitar' (Festival Mix)/ Chemical Brothers - 'Star Guitar' (Pete Heller's Expanded Mix) Our last episode of New Remix vs Classic Remix was back in May with the Scott Grooves (featuring Parliament) classic track 'Mothership Reconnection' which you can revisit here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/05/summersradio-new-remix-vs-classic-remix.html

I chose to compare the two remixes because I didn't feel that the new remix quite stood up to the original remix - such is the case again today with 'Star Guitar' - and once again I shall post both versions so that you can decide for yourself! In both cases it's also an excellent excuse to post a club classic :)

'Star Guitar' was the second single released from the Chemical Brothers fourth album 'Come With Us' in 2002. The single and 12" featured the original (as it came out before the album itself - the album version is a bit shorter) as well as remixes from Pete Heller. Just this week a new remix has been released by Prok & Fitch vs Juan Kidd called the 'Festival Mix' on Toolroom Records - which strangely doesn't mention the Chemical Brothers on the artwork at all. So is it a cover version then, or a remix - or was it done at the bands request because it's rather pointless? Who knows!

In the case of Scott Grooves I clearly preferred the original Daft Punk remix to the newer one by Claude VonStroke - although I could at least see why they did a new remix of it - as it was part of Soma's 20th Anniversary reissues celebration - but in this case I have one question... WHY?

So in this corner we have the new 'Festival Mix' of 'Star Guitar' by Prok & Fitch vs Juan Kidd - Enjoy...

And in this corner we have the classic remix from Pete Heller - the 'Pete Heller Expanded Remix'... Enjoy!

So which one do you prefer? Of course not all new remixes are better than the originals - or the original remixes - but in most cases they have some new sounds or something interesting to offer. The vocals in the new version sound rather flat and the only new interesting bit in the 'Festival Mix' is the semi-siren sound that begins aroound 3:30 - is that a sufficient reason to remix (or cover) a classic?

SummersRadio™ says no.

SummersRadio™ New Music/ Remixes! Death In Vegas + The Kills!

SummersRadio™ New Music/ Remixes! Death In Vegas - 'Medication' (Fearless Nightcrawler Mix)/ 'Your Loft My Acid' (Fearless Trans-House Mix)/ The Kills - 'Future Starts Slow' (Death In Vegas Remix) Death In Vegas have just released their new studio album (their fifth) this week!

We first featured their new single 'Your Loft My Acid' back in July - from their new album called 'Trans-Love Energies' which is out now on cd/ lp and download. There are two versions available on cd and download - the regular ten track album - and the 'Deluxe Version' which features bonus tracks, instrumental versions, and remixes - for a total of 20 tracks!

This is one of two remixes from the bonus disc by band member Richard Fearless - this is the 'Fearless Nightcrawler Mix' of 'Medication'... Enjoy!

This is the 'Fearless Trans-House Remix' of the first single 'Your Loft My Acid' - also available on the bonus disc/ deluxe download... Enjoy!

Death In Vegas have also just remixed the latest single from The Kills! 'Future Starts Slow' is the latest (and third) single released from their album called 'Blood Pressures' which came out in April on Domino Records. This is the 'Death In Vegas Remix' of 'Future Starts Slow'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Dirty Vegas!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Dirty Vegas - 'Days Go By' (Joe Maz Acid Remix)/ 'Little White Doves' (Riso & Sanza Remix)  Joe Maz is a dj/ producer from Miami who makes remixes under his own name - in addition to being part of the remix trio known as DiscoTech - along with Danny Daze and Gigamesh. He's just posted his latest remix online - of the Dirty Vegas club classic 'Days Go By' - today!

London's Dirty Vegas released 'Days Go By' as their first single in 2001 - however it didn't break here in North America until the following year when it was featured in a Mitsubishi car commercial. Their self titled debut album reached the top ten, but their 2004 follow up called 'One' didn't fare anywhere near as well, so they called it a day in 2005 - only to reform three years later.

Joe Maz takes 'Days Go By' on a bit of an acid techno journey which, not surprisingly, is to my liking! If you like this remix you can download it for free courtesy of Joe Maz on his Soundcloud page here:

This is the rather fantastic new 'Joe Maz Acid Remix' of 'Days Go By'... Enjoy!

Dirty Vegas - Days Go By [Joe Maz Remix] by joemaz

Bonus Track! Dirty Vegas have had a busy 2011 - they finally released their third album called 'Electric Love' - in April on Om Records. I wanted to like the album as I really liked the first one - but I just couldn't - as it's too... pop dance or something. They're clearly desperate for a hit, so it all sounds rather calculated.

So despite releasing three singles - the title track, 'Changes' and 'Little White Doves' - and an insane amount of remixes (7 for 'Electric Love', 11 for 'Changes' and 12 for 'Little White Doves') by some high profile artists such as Felix Da Housecat and Ladytron - I've refrained from posting anything new from them - until now.

Actually out of those 30 remixes of three mediocre songs I did manage to find one that I liked - perhaps because it's mostly instrumental! However naturally it was the one remix that wasn't available to share from either youtube or Soundcloud, so I never got around to posting it. But I just uploaded it myself now - and if you dig it, it's available for purchase on 'Part 2' of the 'Little White Doves' EP on itunes.

This is the 'Riso & Sanza Remix' of 'Little White Doves' - a rather fun French disco/ house style romp... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download + New Remix! The Asteroids Galaxy Tour!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download + New Remix! The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - 'Major'/ 'The Golden Age' (Justice Remix) Denmark's Asteroids Galaxy Tour have just released their new single from their forthcoming second album online! The song is called 'Major' and it's from their new album called 'Out Of Frequency' which is due for release on January 31st 2012.

Copenhagen's Asteroids Galaxy Tour centres around the duo of alluring singer Mette Lindberg and producer Lars Iversen - that expands to a six piece band when on tour. They released their first album called 'Fruit' in 2009. Two of the singles from the album - 'The Golden Age' and 'Around The Bend' have received wide exposure from being used in a number of tv commercials - most notably for Heineken and itunes respectively.

'Major' features their horn section prominently - and if the song is to your liking you can download it for free courtesy of the band from their official website here: http://www.theasteroidsgalaxytour.com/

This is 'Major'... Enjoy!

In addition to their new single - a new remix of their hit 'The Golden Age' by France's Justice has also surfaced online this week... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Reissues + New Music! (preview) Pop Will Eat Itself!

SummersRadio™ Music News + New Music Preview! Pop Will Eat Itself - 'Wise Up! Sucker'/ 'Can You Dig It?' (12" Mix)/ 'Seek & Destroy' (snippet) England's cleverly titled Pop Will Eat Itself (a name they nicked from an NME article) look set to have a rather busy October! Three of their most popular albums are getting the deluxe reissue treatment - they're releasing their first new album in 17 years - and they're planning a U.K. tour!

Although largely a club/ underground phenomenon here in North America, PWEI had four albums and 12 singles reach the top 40 between 1989 and 1994 in the U.K.! Their sound incorporated a number of styles including garage rock, industrial, and sample heavy dance music.

On October 10th three of their finest albums will be reissued on cd on the Cherry Red label - digitally remastered and expanded to double cd sets - with bonus tracks and remixes galore! The bonus disc for their sophomore release 'This Is The Day... This Is The Hour... This Is This!' (my personal favorite) features nine tracks - two demos, three alternate versions and four 12" mixes. 1990's 'Cure For Sanity' features 13 tracks on the bonus disc - as does the bonus disc on 1992's 'The Looks Or The Lifestyle?'.

The bonus disc for 'This Is The Day... This Is The Hour... This Is This!' features the 12" remix from Youth of 'Wise Up! Sucker' - this is the original - the production on it still sounds amazing 23 years on... Enjoy!

'This Is The Day... This Is The Hour... This Is This!' featured samples from over a dozen different artists ranging from The Stooges and Bruce Springsteen to the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, James Brown - and the Osmonds! This is another fine single from the album - 'Can You Dig It?'... Enjoy!

PWEI broke up in 1996 - reformed briefly for some shows in 2005 - and then were dormant until vocalist Graham Crabb announced his return with a new line up. 'New Noise Designed By A Sadist' is released on October 3rd on Cooking Vinyl in the U.K. and on Metropolis Records here. It will be their first new full length studio album since 1994 - and their sixth overall - although they've also released a remix album, various collections, and numerous live albums.

This is a preview of the first single from the forthcoming album - called 'Seek & Destroy'. Why didn't I lead off with the new track you may wonder - because this is only a snippet - and as I've stated before, snippets frustrate me! Regardless... Enjoy! :)

SummersRadio™ New Music! Lou Reed & Metallica!!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Lou Reed & Metallica - 'The View' The first new song (full length version of course) from the forthcoming album of the collaboration between Lou Reed and Metallica has just been released online today! 'The View' is the second of ten new tracks featured on the album called 'Lulu' - which is due for release on October 31st (Europe)/ November 1st (North America).

The idea of collaborating together began when both Reed and Metallica performed at the 25th Anniversary Concert for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2009 - but it took until May of this year for the recording process to begin. The album concept began with some demos that Reed wrote that were inspired by two plays from German playwright Frank Wedekind.

'Lulu' combines two of Wedekind's plays - 'Erdgeist' or 'Earth Spirit' which was written in 1895 - and 'Die Buchse der Pandora' or 'Pandora's Box' which was written in 1905. They tell the story of a young German dancer who climbs the social ladder but ends up broke and becoming a prostitute.

How does 'The View' sound? Well, not surprisingly it rocks - but I suspect that it will be more warmly received by Reed fans than some of Metallica's - this is 'The View'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Psychic Ills! + Bonus Track!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Psychic Ills - 'Mind Haze' New York's experimental rock outfit Psychic Ills have just released the first new song from their forthcoming album! The song is called 'Mind Haze' and their new album 'Hazed Dream' is set for release on Oct. 18th on the Sacred Bones Records label.

'Hazed Dream' will present a more focused sound from the band - guitarist/ vocalist/ keyboardist Tres Warren recently told The Wire magazine:

'Some developments in our lives led to new approaches. The music came out the old fashioned way...a way that had been avoided for a while. It was about putting some words to some chords and keeping it simple. Getting back to something. Feeling a feeling. Shaking out the NY brain boil. Movin' away from some old bad vibes, by creating some new good ones. Dreaming out the bad. Takin' it easy on ourselves, and those around us. This album lives in a sunny place. A half memory. A hazed dream.'

This is the Psychic Ill's new single 'Mind Haze' - I like the line 'I'm doing fine when I'm out of my mind'... Enjoy!

Bonus Track! The Dandy Warhols - 'Hell's Bells' The new Psychic Ills song 'Hazed Dream' reminds me of Portland's Dandy Warhols at some of their more subdued moments. This rare cover version of AC/DC's 'Hell's Bell's' was first released on a couple of EP's in 2000 - on the Australian Tour EP for 'Bohemian Like You' and in the U.S. on the 'Tales From Slabtown Vol. 2' EP - which is available on their official website here: http://dandywarhols.com/

The band is currently at work on their ninth studio album called 'This Machine' which is due for release in Feburary of next year. This is their unique cover of 'Hell's Bells' - it's the horns that really makes it their own... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Australia!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Australia - 'Sydney on Acid' Montreal's Tiga just launched his new sub-label called Twin Turbo last month! Tiga founded the Turbo Recordings label back in 1998, and on August 23rd he officially started the digital only Twin Turbo label. This is the second release on the label - an EP from Australia called 'Sydney On Acid'!

Australia consists of two members of Sydney's 'techno party' Motorik! - in collaboration with another one of 'Sydney's finest production teams' who thus far are keeping their identity top secret. This is the title track from their new EP 'Sydney On Acid' - a rather tasty acid techno sandwich... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Ida Engberg!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Ida Engberg - 'Junoverse'/ 'Blue Yonder' Ida Engberg is an artist/ dj/ producer from Stockholm Sweden, who's just released her latest EP on the country's leading techno label Drumcode! The somewhat space themed EP is called 'Blue Yonder' and it features two songs - the title track and one called 'Junoverse' - and both tracks embrace funk and house as well as techno.

There are times like in yesterday's Mono Dos post where the b-side stands out more than the title track - and then there are times when you like both tracks so much that you can't even decide which song is better - which is of course the ultimate scenerio for a single or two track EP! At this moment I'm leaning towards the b-side a bit more - although I really like both - so we shall begin with 'Junoverse'... Enjoy!

And this is the A-side 'Blue Yonder' - I like the vocal sample in it - particularly the line 'I come from another galaxy - a blue one!'. You can keep up with Ida Engberg on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ida-Engberg/29250907018?ref=ts&sk=wall

This is the title track from her new EP... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Mono Dos!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Mono Dos - 'The Last Floor' (Original Mix) Mono Dos are a Parisian duo that have released their newest EP on London Ontario's Definitive Recordings label! The EP is called 'Discobells' and features two tracks - the title track - and this song called 'The Last Floor' - and it's currently available exclusively on Beatport here: http://www.beatport.com/#release/discobells-ep/650769

Although the term 'b-side' may be lost on some in the digital age - the fact is that sometimes the 'other song' (or one of them) on an EP is better - or at least more to your liking - than the title track. Regardless of how you choose to view this one, 'The Last Floor' is one great club tune... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Bot'Ox!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Bot'Ox - 'Theme From Mineurs 27'/ 'The Boat Trap'/ 'Blue Steel' Paris's Bot'Ox have just released a new EP this week featuring songs from the film 'Mineurs 27' - which opens today! Bot'Ox is a band that includes Benjamin Boguet aka Cosmo Vitelli as one of it's members - the dj/ producer who also runs the I'm A Cliche label - which the 'Songs From Mineurs 27' EP is released on.

The EP features six songs from the French action/ thriller - this is the first official video released - for an edited version of the 'Theme From Mineurs 27'... Enjoy!

The EP features five other instrumental tracks - some rather Depeche Mode like - and is available on itunes for a mere $4.99. I particularly like this one called 'The Boat Trap'... Enjoy!

Bonus Track! I suspect that some of you thought that you didn't know any songs from Bot'Ox - but I'll bet you do! This song received ample exposure for it's use in a couple of television commercials - including one for some mediocre restaurant that used to sell pizza. This is 'Blue Steel' from their debut album 'Babylon By Car' which was released last fall - featuring one of the bands three vocalists - Anna Jean... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New-ish Music! (previously unreleased) Daft Punk! Bonus Track!

SummersRadio™ New-ish Music! (previousy unreleased) Daft Punk - 'Drive'/ Daft Punk - 'Derezzed' (Casettes Won't Listen Remix) + Free Download! A previously unreleased Daft Punk song from 1994 (!) is being released today! (after midnight) :) Soma Records - the Scottish techno/ house label started by Slam is celebrating it's 20th Anniversary this year - and they've just released a new compilation appropriately titled 'Soma Records 20 Years'!

The release is available as a triple cd set and download. The first disc is subtitled 'Soma Classics' and features 11 tracks - the opener being this Daft Punk song. Disc two is a 'Slam DJ Mix' featuring 19 tracks and disc three is a 'Silicone Soul DJ Mix' collection featuring 18 tracks.

'Drive' was recorded in 1994 - so Soma's been sitting on this gem for 17 years! This predates the Soma release of the 'Da Funk' single by two years - and their debut album 'Homework' by three. Funny thing is though - if you compare 'Drive' to say 'Derezzed' from their soundtrack to 'Tron: Legacy' - one might say that their sound has been rather... consistent. This is the previously unreleased 'Drive' from Daft Punk... Enjoy!

Bonus Track! It's always a pleasure to revisit this remix of 'Derezzed' by Cassettes Won't Listen - and as a double bonus it's still available as a free download on Soundcloud here: http://soundcloud.com/somekindofawesome/daft-punk-derezzed-cassettes-wont-listen-remix courtesy of Some Kind Of Awesome: http://www.somekindofawesome.com/ ...Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! The Field!

SummersRadio™ New Music! The Field! Sweden's Axel Willner aka The Field has just released his new album called 'Looping State Of Mind'! Like yesterday's post from Gui Borotto - The Field's newest album is released on Germany's Kompakt label - and in both cases it's the artists third full length album. 'Looping State Of Mind' is available digitally now, and it will also be released on cd and vinyl on October 24th (Europe)/ 25th (North America).

'Looping State Of Mind' contains just seven tracks - but each one is between seven and eleven minutes long! The tough part has been deciding which ones to post, as it's a very solid album - and as the title suggests it's also quite hypnotic. I shall begin with what is my favorite track on it so far - 'Then It's White' - the sixth song on the album - and also the spaciest :) ...Enjoy!

Axel Willner also records under the monikers Lars Blek, James Larsson, Porte, and Cordouan! Here's another new track from The Field's excellent new album 'Looping State Of Mind' - this is the second song on the album called 'It's Up There'... Enjoy!

I like The Field's new third album 'Looping State Of Mind' so much that I'm going to feature a third song from it! I was trying to decide if I could wait until the physical cd is out next month to purchase it - or if I should go for the download which is available now. You win this round itunes - but only because this album is so good! This is another standout track - the fourth song on 'Looping State Of Mind' - called 'Arpeggiated Love'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Gui Boratto!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Gui Boratto featuring Luciana Villanova - 'This Is Not The End'/ Gui Boratto - 'Flying Practice' Brazil's Gui Boratto has just released his new album - his third full length - appropriately titled 'III'! It features 12 tracks and is available on vinyl, cd and digitally on the German Kompakt label.

'This Is Not The End' is a standout track featuring the vocals of Luciana Villanova - who's also sang on his previous two albums - perhaps due in part that she's also Gui Boratto's wife! I'm not sure if she's from Brazil as well or not, but her voice is very indie/ North American sounding - which is to my liking :) If you're a fan of Gui's remix of Massive Attack's 'Paradise Circus' (featuring Hope Sandoval on vocals) I suspect that this song may be to your liking - it has a similar feel to it - although it's not quite as dark.

His remix of 'Paradise Circus' is currently in high rotation on television - as it soundtracks the latest commercial for the Lincoln MKX. You can revisit his fine remix in full here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2010/12/summersradio-best-of-2010-massive.html

This is Gui Boratto featuring Luciana Villanova with the eleventh track on his new album 'III' called 'This Is Not The End' - I wouldn't be surprised at all to see this one released as a single someday soon... Enjoy!

Here's another standout track from Gui Boratto's new album 'III' (which is out now) called 'Flying Practice' - it's the fourth track on the album and it follows the official first single 'The Drill'. It's a rather cheerful instrumental song that I think would sound good while driving or flying... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Gigamesh!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Gigamesh ft. Induce - 'When You're Dancing' (RAC Remix) Matt Masurka aka Gigamesh is a dj/producer from Minneaoplis who's set to release his debut EP next month! The 'When You're Dancing' EP has a staggered release - it will be available first on Beatport on Oct. 4th - then on itunes on Oct. 18th - and everywhere else on Nov. 1st.

It will feature three tracks - the 'Extended Version', the 'Cassian Remix' and this 'RAC Remix'. And if that's not enough mixes for you there's another remix package set to follow later on featuring remixes from Moullinex, Fare Soldi, Alexander Holland, Cyclist, 'and possibly more'!

I've previously featured remixes by Portland's RAC (or Remix Artist Collective) of Phantogram, Two Door Cinema Club, and Peter, Bjorn & John. This is their latest remix - of Gigamesh's 'When You're Dancing'.

The song itself is a bit poppy - with the vocals resembling Jamiroquai back when he sounded a bit more enthusiastic. The music takes it to another level - it has a nice funky keyboard strut that only gets better as it gets layered with other spacey and squelchy keyboard sounds - and then there's horns! It kinda makes one want to - I dunno... dance! :) Musically speaking it also reminds me a bit of (a modern take on) Indeep's 1982 club classic 'Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life'.

If this song/ remix is to your liking you can download it for free courtesy of Gigamesh himself from his Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/gigamesh/gigamesh-when-youre-dancing-2 (*update - the free download has now expired but the 'RAC Remix' is available exclusively on Beatport here: http://www.beatport.com/#release/when-youre-dancing-ft-induce/685743 and you can keep up with Gigamesh on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/Gigamesh.Music?ref=ts&sk=app_178091127385

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! Classic + Rare Remix! Lush!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! Classic + Rare Remix! Lush - '500'/ 'Last Night' (Hexadecimal Dub Mix) So I began the 500th Post Celebration with Model 500 - and I shall conclude with '500' - it all fits together you see :)

I hope you've enjoyed the 500th post tuneage... one of my all time favorite spacey electronica tracks - new remixes and free downloads of Oasis and Radiohead songs - the new concert review feature - more free downloads and new music from Tycho and Teen Daze - and a couple classics - one of which is the official debut of another wee feature called 'Bonus Track!' (naturally there's an exclaimation mark as my enthusiasm for music cannot be curbed!)  :)

I would like to mention that I have some big plans in mind to take SummersRadio™ to the next level - to allow you to listen to the music continuously - and to allow you to make playlists. Be patient friends - our time will come :)

Ok, enough smiley faces - let's get on with it - the conclusion of our 500th Post Celebration! Aside from the title of this song being apt, it also seems fitting that the band's name is Lush - as I may or may not be sipping alcohol as I write!
<loud gasps followed by a mysterious hush>

Lush is one of the more interesting 90's bands (although their debut EP was released in 1989) - their first two proper albums were largely labelled as shoegazing, but then on their third release they surprisingly went totally Britpop! I enjoy both phases of their career - these two particular tracks are from the Britpop era, but then the remix of the second track definitely leans more towards the former sound.

This is '500' - which was slightly retitled when released as a single as '500 (Shake Baby Shake)' - the third single released from Lush's ace 1996 album 'Lovelife'. The song is a tribute to the Fiat - the Italian car - but it's also a song about escapism. I love the lines 'When things are looking good there's always compilcations' and 'Let's run away and be so alive'... Enjoy!

Bonus Track! Bonus Track is officially a new feature - although I've done it a few times before - I just didn't come up with a name for it until the Justice post on Sept. 5th. Basically the Bonus Track is an extra song in the post that may or may not be a song by the same artist - or even the same style - just another good song that relates in some small way. In this case the song relates to '500' quite directly - as it was one of the b-side tracks on part 2 of the cd single for '500 (Shake Baby Shake)' - in addition to being released on a rare radio promo-only cd single.

'Last Night' sadly was never a proper single, but certainly a standout track on Lush's 'Lovelife' cd - so I was quite pleased when they released this flawless remix - this is spacey electronica at its finest! The keyboard intro is extended - then the ominous bass drops at one minute in - once you're adequately hypnotized the beautiful vocals of Miki Berenyi begin - then behold... the strings! I love this remix!!! This is the 'Hexidecimal Dub Mix' of 'Last Night'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! New Music + Free Downloads! Tycho/ Teen Daze!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! New Music + Free Downloads! Tycho - 'Hours' (Teen Daze Remix)/ Teen Daze -  'A Silent Planet' EP What better way to continue our 500th Post Celebration than with some new music - and some more free downloads - featuring both a brand new remix and new material by a Vancouver artist!

San Francisco based Scott Hansen aka Tycho is set to release his newest album called 'Dive' on November 15th on the Ghostly International label. 'Hours' is the first single - and it's just been remixed by Vancouver's electronic/ chillwave/ ambient/ disco golden boy Teen Daze! If this song/ remix is to your liking you can download a copy for free courtesy of Tycho himself by clicking on the download arrow or by clicking here:

This is Tycho's 'Hours' - the 'Teen Daze Remix'... Enjoy!

Hours (Teen Daze Remix) by Tycho

Here's the cover artwork for Tycho's forthcoming new album 'Dive':

Vancouver's Teen Daze has also just released his latest EP on itunes this week! The new EP is called 'A Silent Planet' and it was partially inspired by the C.S. Lewis novel 'Out Of The Silent Planet'. The EP explores some new sounds for Teen Daze and features six very lush, rather ambient new tracks - and it's out now on the Waaga Records label.

My favorite track so far is track 2 - the dreamy 'It Calls Me Under'. You can listen to the entire EP right here - simply click on the arrows to change tracks - Enjoy!

Two of the songs on the EP - 'Surface' and 'The Harvest' - are available as free downloads on his bandcamp site here:

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! Concert Review + Rare Remixes! The Human League! Part 2!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! Concert Review/ Rare Remixes! The Human League - '(Keep Feeling) Fascination' (Groove Collision TMC Mix)/ 'Don't You Want Me' (Tommy Reye Remix)

If you're more than just a casual Human League fan, you'll know that they've actually had quite a number of hits - and they just kept coming Sunday night - along with numerous costume changes as well! After playing a couple more singles from their new album "Credo' they played their North American number one hit from 1986 'Human' - followed with 'Love Action (I Believe In Love)', then 'All I Ever Wanted' from their 2001 album 'Secrets' and 'Tell Me When' from their 1995 comeback album 'Octopus'. They pretty much stuck to the original versions of songs - no radical remixes - although a couple songs were extended a bit.

Hearing the opening bassline of '(Keep Feeling) Fascination' always cheers me up - here's a rare remix included on the U.K. bonus disc of their 2003 'Very Best Of' collection - this is the 'Groove Collision TMC Mix'... Enjoy!

'(Keep Feeling) Fascination' was followed with 'Mirror Man' and by the time they got into 'Don't You Want Me' the band was at risk of being totally drowned out by the crowd singing along! They did pretty much every song a fan would want to hear - the only other songs I wished they might have played were 'The Things That Dreams Are Made Of' and 'Louise' - which I have a total soft spot for - but then it wasn't much of a hit here in North America anyway.

The first encore featured Philip alone for a rendition of one of their earliest singles 'Being Boiled' - which was first released in 1978. Susan and Joanne then returned for a song originally credited to Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey - that has since become a concert staple for the band - 'Together In Electric Dreams'.

As a massive fan I loitered around afterwards in hopes of getting my '21st Anniversary Edition' of 'Dare' & 'Love And Dancing' autographed but the band slipped out too quickly. Luckily they were selling copies of 'Credo' - both regular and autographed - earlier so I picked up an autographed one (and a t-shirt of course) just in case they were in a hurry.

All in all it was pretty flawless show - my one small criticism would be that they didn't have any high tech lighting to match their high tech equipment - they just used the rather outdated house system at the Rickshaw. And no disrespect intended as both Joanne and Susan are amazing - pure class, but Susan needs to eat more or something - some of her outfits did not flatter her near anorexic frame. More importantly though, everyone's vocals are in fine form and if The Human League comes to town I highly recommend checking them out!

Here's the most extended of all the extended versions I've ever found of their signature song 'Don't You Want Me' - clocking in at 11 and a half minutes - this is the super extended 'Tommy Reye Remix'... Enjoy!

Here's the full 17 song setlist performed on Sept. 11th, 2011:

Never Let Me Go
Open Your Heart
Sound Of The Crowd
Heart Like A Wheel
The Lebanon
Egomaniac
Empire State Human
Night People
Human
Love Action
All I Ever Wanted
Tell Me When
(Keep Feeling) Fascination
Mirror Man
Don't You Want Me

encore:

Being Boiled
Together In Electric Dreams

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! Concert Review! The Human League! Part 1!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! Concert Review! The Human League - 'The Lebanon' (12" Extended Version) As our 500th Post Celebration continues I thought I'd try something a wee bit different - a concert review - I certainly go to enough shows!

Sunday night synth pop/ new wave pioneers The Human League performed in Vancouver for their first time ever at the Rickshaw theatre! The Human League formed in 1977 as an experimental all synthesizer band - featuring co-founder Philip Oakey on vocals. Although the band saw some acclaim - David Bowie told the New Musical Express that he 'had seen the future of pop music' after catching them live in December 1978 - they released two albums, but success eluded them.

It wasn't until after they added two teenage girls (that Oakley saw dancing together in a club!) as dancers/ vocalists in 1980 that the band were primed for mainstream success. With the addition of Susan Ann Sulley (then 17) and Joanne Catherall (then 18) the band went on to release their third album 'Dare' - which hit number one in many countries including the U.K. and here in Canada. It peaked at #3 in the U.S. - and it should be noted that Sunday night was also September 11th - the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

You could feel the anticipation in the crowd - we were about to see a truly influential and legendary electronic act perform in just seconds - which waned a bit as the pre-show music seemed to play forever. I wondered how many more times the roadie could move those same two water bottles around by the base of the keyboards. But the excitement level in the club quickly lifted when the covers were taken off the band's equipment - their set up looked like the future in the 80's - and it still does now! This photo is just of the right hand side of the stage - they also had more keyboards - guitars - and some massive keytars!

The band had four instrument players - Philip entered in a stylish hooded trenchcoat - and proceeded to zig zag all over the stage - while Susan and Joanne took turns singing and dancing on each side. The band opened with one of just three songs performed from their latest album 'Credo' - 'Never Let Me Go'. The sound was excellent - and the energy level of the crowd quickly escalated further as they followed up with 'Open Your Heart' and 'Sound Of The Crowd' from 'Dare'.

Philip gave a respectful nod to the fact it was 9/11 by mentioning that the next two songs dealt with war - and one can easily tell by their lyrics that they're certainly pro peace. In fact some might say that they were ahead of their time in more ways than one. The first of the two political numbers was 'Heart Like A Wheel' from their 1990 release 'Romantic? - a song about U.S. military imperialism - with lines like 'You can't keep the wheels turning anymore/ With anger, blood and fear/ Or make any friends with an M16/ When you blast your way through here' and 'Sell your soul to a holy war'. This was quicly followed with one of the evening's many highlights - 'The Lebanon' - one of their finest singles - from their 1984 release 'Hysteria'.

This is the '12" Extended Version' from the 12" vinyl single of 'The Lebanon' - which was quite rare for many years - until the release of their excellent 'Original Remixes & Rarities' compilation in 2005... Enjoy!

More to come in Part 2!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! New Remix + Free Download! Oasis - 'Wonderwall' (Figure Drumstep Edit) So we continue our 500th Post Celebration (feel free to use it as an excuse to get sedated - I am!) with another new remix and free download! Josh Gard aka Figure is a bass music producer from Eerie Indiana. He's just released a favorite from his live sets - his remix of 'Wonderwall' from Oasis.

'Wonderwall' was released as the third single from Oasis' second album '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' in 1995. It's certainly no secret that the band were a fan of the Beatles - and 'Wonderwall' was named after the 1968 film and soundtrack - which was composed by George Harrison.

You can download Figure's remix for free by visting his Soundcloud page here - where you can also check out some of his other remixes: http://soundcloud.com/figure and follow him on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/IMFIGURE?sk=app_216924904991602#!/IMFIGURE?sk=wall

SummersRadio™ 500th Post!!! Classic! Model 500!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post!!! Classic! Model 500 - 'Neptune' Today we hit a milestone - our 500th post - and in less than a year - hoo-ray!! It seems fitting to begin the celebration with a classic - so a song featuring the 'Godfather Of Techno' is apt. Model 500 is a pseudonym for Juan Atkins - who is largely credited as the originator of techno - Detroit techno in particular - along with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.

'Neptune' is the third song on the five track 'Sonic Sunset' EP - which was released in 1994 on the legendary Belgian label R & S Records - and it's nothing short of an incredible piece of music that sounds just as amazing today.

This is a great weekend for concerts in Vancouver - last night Germany's techno/ minimal/ tech house duo Booka Shade (who've also recorded on the R & S label) performed an excellent live show at 560 - tonight I'm off to SHAHdj's 4th Anniversary party featuring Blu Mar Ten at the Red Room - and tomorrow synth pop pioneers the Human League are at the Rickshaw! So it's a busy weekend then, but I will post more tunes to celebrate our 500th post soon.

So join us in celebrating SummerRadio™'s exploits across Earth - and beyond :) - this is Model 500's 'Neptune'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Compilation! Mo's Ferry Great Cinema Show!

SummersRadio™ New Compilation! Mo's Ferry Great Cinema Show! Luka & Lazo - 'Dust No. 4' (Barem Remix) Mo's Ferry Prod. is a German minimal house label currently based in Berlin - and their new compilation is called 'Mo's Ferry Great Cinema Show'!

The compilation features 15 tracks including this classic from Luka & Lazo - 'Dust No.4' (Barem Remix) - which was first released as a single in 2007. Luka & Lazo are Luka Cipek and Ivica Lazarevic - a duo from Zagreb Croatia.

This song is a great club tune to get lost in.  Although booming in nature, it starts off rather subtley - but once you're a couple minutes in - it dawns on you what a great groove this is! This is the 'Barem Remix' of 'Dust No. 4'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! DJ Shadow!

SummersRadio™ New Music! DJ Shadow - 'Sad And Lonely' Well it's been a long time coming, but DJ Shadow's new studio album - his fourth - is released on September 27th! (Oct. 3rd in Europe) It's called 'The Less You Know, The Better' - the cd will feature 17 tracks and the download version has 19 - the cd has one song not on the download version - and the download has three songs not on the cd.

'The Less You Know, The Better' is somewhat of a return to the style of his classic debut album 'Endtroducing...' in that the songs on the record are largely made from obscure samples. 'Sad And Lonely' is the fifth song on the new album and it features the vocals of Susan Reed. (Thanks Roeland - Cheers!)

Susan Reed was a singer, harpist and zitherist who was popular in the New York folk scene in the 1940's - in 1945 Life magazine dubbed her 'the pet of Manhattan nightclubbers'. In the process of trying to find the singer to clear the sample, Shadow discovered that she had died just a week before - on April 25th 2010. In the end they located her husband and son who gave their approval after hearing the song.

This is 'Sad And Lonely' from DJ Shadow featuring the vocals of Susan Reed... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Concert News! EMA!

SummersRadio™ Concert News! EMA - 'California'/ 'Milkman' Portland based Erika M. Anderson aka EMA released her first solo album - since disbanding her noise-folk band Gowns - in May. The album is called 'Past Life Martyred Saints' and is released on Berlin's Souterrain Transmissions label.

EMA is currently touring in support of 'Past Life Martyred Saints' - playing shows throughout Europe this month - and returning to North America in October. She'll be performing in Vancouver at the Biltmore Cabaret on October 8th (with Wild Beasts) - you can check out her full tour itinerary here:
http://www.souterraintransmissions.com/souterrain/artist_shows.jsp?artist=22740

EMA has cited Lou Reed as a major influence in her songwriting for 'Past Life Martyred Saints' - and you can hear elements of his signature spoken word delivery in her second single (and first video) 'California'. Musically speaking her sound is often both dark and alluring... Enjoy!

This is her second video - for the third single released from 'Past Life Martyred Saints' - 'Milkman'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Justice! + Bonus Track!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Justice - 'Audio Video Disco' The new single from the French duo Justice has just been leaked online this weekend! 'Audio Video Disco' is the title track from their forthcoming second album which is due for release on October 25th on Ed Banger Records - and it will be released as the second official single on September 19th.

I do like Justice but at the same time I've always found them to be greatly overrated - and this new song does nothing to change that. It sounds a bit like a previously unreleased Buggles b-side track from 1979! But then, perhaps that was the sound they were going for - this is 'Audio Video Disco'... Enjoy!

Bonus Track! Just for kicks here's the b-side to The Buggles massive 1979 hit 'Video Killed The Radio Star' - called 'Kid Dynamo' - which I think I may just like a titch more than 'Audio Video Disco' :) Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! The Style Council!

SummersRadio™ Classic! The Style Council - 'Long Hot Summer' (Extended Version) So this is the last long weekend of summer - although it seems a bit soon since the summer sun didn't arrive until the start of August in Vancouver this year! Technically we still have a few more weeks to enjoy, but it seems like a good time to reflect back on how it's been. There are certain songs that are synonymous with the season - including The Style Council's 'Long Hot Summer'.

After disbanding The Jam in 1982 Paul Weller went on to form The Style Council in 1983 with keyboardist Mick Talbot - formerly of Dexy's Midnight Runners. 'Long Hot Summer' was their third (and most successful) single - which was later included on their debut mini album called 'Introducing The Style Council'. I love the bass sound - and how the keyboard bits sort of hover over the song - this the somewhat rare 'Extended Version' (clocking in at nearly seven minutes of chilled bliss!) of 'Long Hot Summer'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Makkametrik! Flavio Acaron!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Makkametrik - 'First On The Scene'/ Flavio Acaron - 'Addictive' These two new songs are featured on the latest EP released on the Platform B label which was started by Munich's Lutzenkirchen in 2007. The idea behind the label is to (thus far) release only EP's that feature a new track from Lutzenkirchen - along with new tracks from friends to help give them exposure as well. Each EP usually features three tracks (but sometimes four) - one from Lutzenkirchen (although sometimes two) and the others from... well, others! :)

Their latest EP is appropriately titled '# 14' and I'm liking all four tracks on it - but my favorite thus far by far is Makkametrik's song 'First On The Scene'. It starts off with this nice loose swagger that builds gradually until before you know it, you're lost in an amazing world full of spacey keyboard awesomeness... Enjoy!

This is the opening track on Platform B's latest Lutzenkirchen and friends EP - Flavio Acaron's 'Addicted' - a nice techno/ disco/ house hybrid that features vocal samples speaking about... illegal drugs! (gasp) Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Royksopp!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Royksopp - 'Shores Of Easy'/ The Irrepressibles - 'In This Shirt' (RYXP Edit) Norway's Royksopp are giving away free presents! These presents come in the form of two free downloads from their official website - and they're not being stingy - the two songs combined (one original tune and one remix) clock in at nearly 25 minutes of quality music!

First up is a brand new ambient/ techno Royksopp track called 'Shores Of Easy' which the band says is 'best served when calm' - although even if you didn't feel that way initially the song will certainly soothe you into such a state. They describe it as 'a perfect soundtrack to that borderline state between being awake and being asleep – the state where everything seems possible.' They also mention that this song is not indicitive of what their fifth album will sound like - although I wouldn't mind at all if it was!

Both this song and the remix posted further below are available as a free download from Royksopp's official website here: http://royksopp.com/track-of-the-moment

This is 'Shores Of Easy'... Enjoy!

And here's your other present - Royksopp's remix of The Irrepressibles 'In This Shirt'. The Irrepressibles are a ten member 'orchestral ensemble' from London that released their debut album called 'Mirror Mirror' last year. They just officially released an EP for 'In This Shirt' earlier this month - which features this remix from Royksopp - as well as remixes from Hercules & Love Affair and Zero 7.

Royksopp are giving away their remix of 'In This Shirt' as a free download on their website as well! http://royksopp.com/track-of-the-moment

This is the 'RYXP Edit' aka the 'Royksopp Remix' of The Irrepressibles song 'In This Shirt'... Enjoy!
