SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Spilt Milk!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Spilt Milk - 'Starchild'/ 'Sounds'

Spilt Milk has just released a new EP online called 'Theories'! The Vancouver dj/ producer's latest EP features six tracks - and as a bonus he's decided to make it available as a free download!

Spilt Milk explains his inspiration for the EP on Soundcloud:

"The reason for these collection of songs is to bring awareness towards our personal ignorance of Canada and world's scientific truths. We continue use the money system as an excuse to destroy our world. In Canada, our conservative government has cancelled most government funded research that does not lead to profit. We also muzzle our scientists when they try to speak out against industries that poison our lands, waters, and our food supply.

We continue to poison ourselves with our own chemicals, GMO, and by using non-organic unnatural processes. We are in total awareness that we are just killing ourselves and every other plant and creature on this planet. If you think of the world as an entire whole organism, there is not a single person who would disagree with the fact that we are one very unhealthy and dying individual.

Its time regain awareness of our wholeness as one earth and stop using our own personal wealth as the excuse to ignore the truth.

Thank you for all of your listening and enjoyment and support!"

Trevor Wyatt - Spiltmilk

You can download the full EP on Soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/djspiltmilk/sets/spiltmilk-theories-ep (or click on the download arrows for the two individual tracks below)

I've chosen my two favourite tracks from the EP so far - although it should be noted that all six are postworthy. Let's begin at the end with track six from the 'Theories' EP - this hypnotic acid dipped 'downtechno' creation is called 'Starchild'... Enjoy!

'Sounds' is the first track on the 'Theories' EP and it features a bevy of interesting sonic delights... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Ian Ross!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Downloads! Ian Ross - 'The C-130 Feedback Rig Jam Pt. 1'/ 'The C-130 Feedback Rig Jam Pt. 2'

So a couple days ago we ventured sometime into the future with the new Arcade Fire song from 'The Hunger Games' soundtrack - then we were off 'Speeding Around The Universe' with Tim Xavier - and then we let go of 'Gravity' with Pan-Pot. Tonight we fly into deep space - perhaps even into a black hole! :)

Ian Ross aka C-130 is a Vancouver electronic artist who makes 'minimal/micro/techno/house with some organic leanings... periodically with eastern & latin influences'. Ross has just recorded two new ambient/ experimental/ noise tracks which came about thusly:

'So last night I'm sitting at my desk trying to find the source of a faint pulse, and realized it was gurgle of some static or something caught in a delay vst I had running in my Ableton 'feedback sculptor' set. It was a nice sound, so I hit record & started fiddling, using the other effects I have in the set, and this is what I wound up with. No synths, beats, instruments, edits, tracking or overdubs. Just effects back & thru each other. It's pretty rough going but I think quite intense & beautiful if you go right through it. And very cyclical... think Steve Reich vs Merzbow.'

Parts 1 and 2 of 'The C-130 Feedback Rig Jam' are both intriguing and hypnotic, but actually quite different. Part 1 clocks in around eight and a half minutes in length with an assortment of usual sounds popping up that both startle and entrance. Part 2 runs for nearly 25 minutes and is a full on journey into the unknown! This is where we may slip into a black hole, or perhaps somewhere otherworldly.

The good news is that if either or both tracks are to your liking they're both available as a free download from C-130's Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/c-130-1 (or simply click on the respective download icons)

First up we have 'The C-130 Feedback Rig Jam Pt. 1'... Enjoy!

And this is 'The C-130 Feedback Rig Jam Pt. 2' - prepare to be transported... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! The Orb!

SummersRadio™ Classic! The Orb - 'Little Fluffy Clouds' (Live Remix) 'What were the skies like when you were young?' If you didn't already know SummersRadio™ transmits (as it were) from Club English Bay on beautiful English Bay in Vancouver's west end. This picture was taken recently from my livingroom window - and it reminded me of this classic from The Orb - not for the fluffy clouds so much as the vibrant colours and the line 'The most beautiful skies as a matter of fact'.

'Little Fluffy Clouds' was first released as a single in 1990 and was included on The Orb's debut album 'Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld' in 1991. It was re-released in 1993, and numerous remixes have also been released over the years. This is a very cool fan made video featuring some amazing time lapse footage... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ 420th Post Of 2011! Classic! Rita Marley!

SummersRadio™ 420th Post Of 2011! Classic! Rita Marley - 'One Draw' (Extended Version) So apparently I've been rather busy blogging this year - this is my 420th post of the year! So let's celebrate Vancouver style - with some Jamaican style music!

Rita Marley began her singing career at age 18 as a member of the trio called the Soulettes - who were produced by Bob Marley. The two married in 1966 and she later became a member of the I Threes - his backup singers.

'One Draw' was a single from her debut solo album called 'Who Feels It Knows It' - which was released in 1982 - a year after Bob died of brain cancer. The song was banned from some radio stations for it's lyrical content - which no doubt helped it to go on and become one of the biggest selling reggae singles of all time!

This is the 'Extended Version' of Rita Marley's classic 'One Draw' - from the 12" single released on Shanachie Records - one of the world's largest independent labels ... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Siskiyou!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Siskiyou - 'Always Awake'/ 'Not The Kind' SummersRadio™ reached a new milestone today as far as total views go - hoo-ray! Many thanks to everyone who's enjoyed the music so far - and always feel free to share links with friends to spread the good sounds - Cheers! So today we shall celebrate with not just one, but two new posts featuring new music - this one features some fine local Vancouver talent - and a bonus free download!

Vancouver's Siskiyou is a four piece band led by Colin Hubert - a former member of Great Lake Swimmers - and also includes Erik Arnesen (who's still a member of GLS), Shaunn Watt and Peter Carruthers. Their label Constellation Records have just released the 'Constellation Records 2011 Sampler' on Soundcloud. It features 13 tracks - including a track from each full length album they've released this year, plus some digital only singles.

Siskiyou's song 'Always Awake' is one of two of the band's tracks on the compilation - and if it's to your liking you can download a copy of the song for free from the label's website here: http://cstrecords.com/new-track-siskiyou-always-awake/

Siskiyou notes Guided By Voices as an influence and have been compared to Neil Young, but this song is a bit more experimental and leans more towards Roger Waters and Pink Floyd territory. 'Always Awake' is well suited to a late Sunday evening (or early Monday morning) with it's dark atmospherics. It's beautiful - but sad - further evidence for my studies that proove there is beauty in sadness - including depression. I love the distant sound of the outside rain in the background too... Enjoy!

SISKIYOU - Always Awake by Constellation Records

Bonus Track! Siskiyou - 'Not The Kind' In addition to 'Always Awake' released this month - Siskiyou also recently released their second album called 'Keep Away The Dead' on October 3rd. The album features ten songs - and with titles like 'Fiery Death', 'So Cold' and 'Dead Right Now' - it's not a Friday night party album - well maybe for the comedown part :) It may seem dark but if you lend it your ear you shall be rewarded with some truly beautiful music.

'Not The Kind' is one of my favorite songs from their new album - the lyrics only have one line - but it's a powerful one that can be taken several ways. Some of their more uptempo songs resemble those of Arcade Fire, but I prefer their more atmospheric tunes like this one... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2011 Halloween Spectacular! The Chilling Finale! The Tear Garden!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2011 Halloween Spectacular! The Chilling Finale! The Tear Garden - 'The Centre Bullet' And now the chilling conclusion of our second annual STARTLEFEST - the 2011 Edition... after unwraping our souls we wrap up with this disturbing hypnotic ambient track from Vancouver's own Tear Garden. The Tear Garden was formed in 1985 by The Legendary Pink Dots Edward Ka-Spel and Skinny Puppy's cEvin Key - and they released their debut full length album in 1987 called 'Tired Eyes Slowly Burning' on Vancouver's Nettwerk label.

The subject of the song is disturbing enough - shooting oneself in the head - but it reaches it's frightening peak around 7:25 in. In fact I DARE you to listen to the last two minutes of this song with your eyes closed! I guarantee you'll be creeped out - maybe even startled!!

The is The Tear Garden's 'The Centre Bullet' - beware... and Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! SBTRKT!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! SBTRKT - 'Hold On' (Siavash Cold As Ice Remix) It's always good to see a Vancouver dj/ producer or artist take off internationally - as there's a lot more going on musically in our beautiful city beyond the horror that is Nickelback and the blandness of Bryan Adams!

Siavash Ashrafinia is Vancouver DJ/ producer Siavash - he's just released a new remix of SBTRKT's 'Hold On' online this weekend - and it's already cracked the top 10 on The Hype Machine! http://hypem.com/#!/popular

London's otherwise anyonymous SBTRKT released his self titled (as it were) debut album in June. A number of singles have been released from the album already - but the standout track 'Hold On' that features vocals from Sampha isn't one of them just yet. Siavash's new remix will be released physically on a while label 12" on November 22nd - but if this remix is to your liking you can download it for free on Soundcloud now courtesy of Siavash here: http://soundcloud.com/djsiavash/cold (or simply click on the download arrow below)

This is the new 'Siavash Cold As Ice Remix' of SBTRKT's 'Hold On'... Enjoy!

Hours (Teen Daze Remix) by Tycho

Here's the cover artwork for Tycho's forthcoming new album 'Dive':

Vancouver's Teen Daze has also just released his latest EP on itunes this week! The new EP is called 'A Silent Planet' and it was partially inspired by the C.S. Lewis novel 'Out Of The Silent Planet'. The EP explores some new sounds for Teen Daze and features six very lush, rather ambient new tracks - and it's out now on the Waaga Records label.

My favorite track so far is track 2 - the dreamy 'It Calls Me Under'. You can listen to the entire EP right here - simply click on the arrows to change tracks - Enjoy!

Two of the songs on the EP - 'Surface' and 'The Harvest' - are available as free downloads on his bandcamp site here:

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Kaiserdisco!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Kaiserdisco - 'Amalfino' (DelayNoMore Whistler Powder Mix) Kaiserdisco are a duo from Hamburg Germany consisting of Frederic Berger and Patrick Buck. 'Amalfino' was the A-side of their 'Cocktail' 12" which was released in November 2009.

DelayNoMore are also a duo - from here in Vancouver - consisting of Farshad Abasi and Sebastien Nault - aka Dj's Abasi and Ceebas respectively. They've kept this remix under wraps for some time but they're finally letting the cat out of the sac! The 'DelayNoMore Whistler Powder Mix' of 'Almafino' takes the original song and adds 'Elements' of Danny Tenaglia's classic track of the same name - which was released on Twisted Records in 1997 - to create a new club smash!

Danny Tenaglia's 'Elements' mentions 'Lula' who was featured on another awesome Twisted Records classic track from NYLX which you can revisit here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2010/11/summersradio-classic-nylx-feat-lula.html

SummersRadio™ Classic! Cub!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Cub - 'New York City' Vancouver's Cub released their second album in 1995 called 'Come Out Come Out'. It included two covers - one of John Lennon & Yoko Ono's 'I'm Your Angel' and also the Go-Go's 'Vacation' - as well as a hidden dance track - a seven minute remix of their first hit 'Go Fish'.

Their third album 'Box Of Hair' followed in 1996 and by the time 1997's Australian compilation of singles and rarities called 'Mauler' came out, they had disbanded. If you'd like to learn more about what singer Lisa Marr has been up to you can check out her website here: http://www.lisamarr.org/

'New York City' was covered by They Might Be Giants in 1996 on their 'Factory Showroom' album - but this is the original... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Cub!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Cub - 'My Chinchilla' 'My Chinchilla' is another Cub (not club!) classic featured on their debut full length called 'Betti-Cola'. It's appears that Satan is throwing candy on them in their bedroom in this video - Cub was known for throwing candy into the audience at their shows! I remember one festival they played at Thunderbird Stadium - I think they had more people at their performance on the side stage than the headliner did on the main one! Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Cub!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Cub - 'Go Fish' One thing leads to another... After posting Solar Bears remix of their song 'Cub' yesterday I got to thinking about my all time favorite Vancouver band - Cub! They were a female indie pop trio that released their first single in 1992 - a six song EP called 'Pep'. I worked at Coast 1040 back then, which was Vancouver's first modern rock station. This was before mp3's of course, so we played about 80% cd's and 20% records - of songs available only on vinyl. (there were also a few songs on DAT tapes!) Out of everything we played Cub's 'Pep' EP was the only piece of 7" vinyl! (the only format that 'Pep' came out on - although these songs later appeared on their 1993 debut full length 'Betti-Cola' - which featured Neko Case drumming on a few tracks, and artwork by Dan De Carlo of Archie Comics fame!) Cub's sound was dubbed by some as 'cuddlecore' - both innocent and fun... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Gorillaz!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Gorillaz - 'Aspen Forest' Gorillaz released their new album called 'The Fall' on Christmas day! It was recorded on the North American leg of their 'Escape To Plastic Beach World Tour' which started Oct. 3rd in Montreal and wrapped up here in Vancouver on Nov. 3rd. It has been released 'free' to fans - meaning that you can download it legally for free if you're a member of their official fan club - but you must pay to be a member! It was recorded using an iPad - along with a number of additional instruments. This instrumental number called 'Aspen Forest' was partially written in Santa Fe and then finished here in Vancouver... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Best Of 2010! Deadmau5 & Chris Lake!

SummersRadio™ Best of 2010! Deadmau5 & Chris Lake - 'I Said' (Michael Woods Remix) Toronto's Deadmau5 and London's Chris Lake teamed up on this single which was released in February at the height of Vancouver's Olympic mayhem - helping to make it next to impossible to get into his free performance during the 2010 winter games! The song is included on his 4x4=12 album released earlier this month, and this remix by Michael Woods is one of the finest club singles of the year... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Young Canadians!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Young Canadians - 'Hawaii' So here's a fine example of why Vancouver's Art Bergmann - who plays the homeless gentleman in the Luxury Bob video below - is considered a Canadian punk legend! And if you want to completely get Christmas out of your mind for a couple minutes this will do the trick - an energetic number clearly in support of traveling - this is 'Hawaii'... Enjoy!
