Leftfield were originally a duo consisting of Neil Barnes and Paul Daleythat released two massive albums in the nineties - 'Leftism' in 1995 and 'Rhythm And Stealth' in 1999. They broke up in 2002 and Barnes resurrected the project on his own in 2010.

SummersRadio™ Classic! Nash The Slash - 'Psychotic Reaction'
Jeff Plewman - better known as Nash The Slash - has passed away at age 66. The Toronto musician is best known for playing the electric violin and for performing covered in surgical bandages from 1979 until his retirement in 2012. He was also a founding member of the band FM. This is the cover art from his 1984 album 'American Bandages':
'American Bandages' (available on iTunes) is a collection of 60's and 70's tracks reimagined - including 'Psychotic Reaction' which features Nash mixing in spoken word parts from the viewpoint of John Hinckley who was obsessed with Jodie Foster and tried to kill present Ronald Reagan.
Nash The Slash was a unique talent and captivating artist who shall live on through his music. This is 'Psychotic Reaction' - like all of his music, the production here is impeccable even three decades on... Enjoy!

French actress and singer Emmanuelle Seigner is releasing a new EP next week called 'You Think You're A Man'! 'You Think You're A Man' is a cover of Divine's 1984 underground club hit. The EP will feature two remixes - one by Yuksek and this one by Jean Tonique. Seigner - who's married to director Roman Polanski - is releasing the EP next week - March 17th on Universal.
Jean Tonique's remix of 'You Think You're A Man' is a full on disco/ funk makeover complete with Nile Rodgers style funky guitars and great strings... Enjoy!

It's a classic kind of Sunday today - so we present one from the vaults from Fluke! 'Bullet' was released as the first single from their third album called 'Oto' in 1995 on the Astralworks label.
Four remixes were released on cd single and on 10 and 12" vinyl including this epic masterpiece called the 'Percussion Cap' remix.
The title of yesterday's Scan X song (for 'Sensorium') reminded me of this classic 1984 underground club hit from Cabaret Voltaire - 'Sensoria'! Cabaret Voltaire were an experimental electronic/ industrial band from Sheffield, England. They released their first album in 1979 - 'Sensoria' was first included on their 1984 album called 'Micro-Phonies'.
'Sensoria' features amazing production - and I reckon it still sounds fantastic nearly 30 years on. This is the rather trippy original video in high quality - for the '12" Extended Mix'... Enjoy!

Startlefest 2013 continues... with the closing track from the score of the 1999 film 'The Virgin Suicides'. The film was based on the book by Jeffrey Eugenides, it was directed by Sophia Coppola and it was produced by her father Francis Ford Coppola.
The score was written by French duo Air - and the final track on the score features a portion of the film's narration - pitched down - and set to their music to create an eerie finish... Enjoy!
I haven't posted a classic for a while so today let's travel back in time to 1991 - when Chicago based artist/ producer William LaTour aka LaTour released his self titled debut album.
His first single 'People Are Still Having Sex' was a major club hit - 'Blue' was the follow up single - and it was re-released the following year after being featured prominently in the club scene of the film 'Basic Instinct'.

Bonus Track! 'Silent To The Dark' was the band's debut single released in 2001 and included on their 2002 debut album 'Holes In The Wall'. An edited version called 'Silent To The Dark II' was re-released later that year. This is the original album version in all it's nine minutes of glory!
I love how the song unravels around 3:21 in and takes you somewhere else entirely before reeling you back in near the end - it's nothing short of an epic masterpiece... Enjoy!
The trumpet in yesterday's Moonrags post reminded me the horns in one of my all time favorite songs - the 12" Version of The Boo Radleys song 'Lazarus'! 'Lazarus' was first released as a single in 1992 - an edited version was included on their 1993 album 'Giant Steps' - and then it was re-released with remixes in 1994.
This original '12" Version' extends the reggae influenced tripped out intro for a couple minutes until around 2:54 where the full wall of sound guitars kick in... Enjoy!

New Order's club classic 'Blue Monday' is 30 years old today - released by Factory Records on March 7th, 1983! The song also has the distinction of being the best selling 12" single of all time, having sold 1.16 million copies in the U.K. alone.
There's certainly no shortage of remixes of this song released over the years - this is a tasteful update from Kurd Maverick which was released in 2009 called the 'Vandalism Mix'... Enjoy!

In just one hour I shall be leaving to see a legend perform at B.C. Place - Sir Paul McCartney! He's only played in Vancouver once previously - the first time that The Beatles played in Canada almost 50 years ago - on August 22nd, 1964 at the Empire Stadium. Their set lasted less than half an hour but tonight's show is rumoured to be close to three hours long!
This flawless bootleg of Nine Inch Nails 1994 single 'Closer' vs The Beatles 1969 single 'Come Together' first appeared around 2004. It was created by Paris's DJ Zebra (http://www.zebramix.fr/category/musique/) who's recorded over 500 mashups since 2001... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! I commend McCartney for supporting the legalization of marijuana over the years. He's had several well publicized run ins with the law for possession - after spending ten days in a Tokyo jail in 1980 he was quoted as saying "cannabis is ... less harmful than rum punch, whiskey, nicotine and glue, all of which are perfectly legal" and in 1997 he said "People are smoking pot anyway and to make them criminals is wrong".
I think it's a bit of an embarrassment that two U.S. states (Washington and Colorado) recently legalized it for recreational use before British Columbia has - but our time will come soon enough.
'Hi Hi Hi' was released with Wings in 1972 - and I reckon the opening line 'Well when I met you at the station you were standing with a bootleg in your hand' fits well with the track above... Enjoy!
Today we have a classic from the vaults - along with a slew of rare remixes! New York's Mark Gage aka Vapourspace released the 'Gravitional Arch Of 10' single in 1993 which was included on the 'Themes From Vapourspace' album released the following year.
The album 'Themes From Vapourspace' appears to be out of print, but you can find some copies online. What's scarier than being haunted by a thousand ghosts, spirits and demons? Being haunted by one person - who's still alive - an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend! Few musicians have summed up that experience as perfectly as Love & Rockets did with their song 'Haunted When The Minutes Drag' on their debut album 'Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven', which was released in October 1985.
Although never released as a single 'Haunted When The Minutes Drag' was featured in John Hughes 1988 film 'She's Having A Baby'. These guys know how to create a mood - Daniel Ash and David J did of course co-write the goth classic 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' as members of Bauhaus in 1979. Yesterday's fine rework of Leonard Cohen's 'By The Rivers Dark' reminded me of another excellent Leonard Cohen remix (this one a cover) from the vaults! In 1992 Echo & The Bunnymen's lead singer Ian McCulloch released his second solo album called 'Mysterio', that included a cover of 'Lover, Lover, Lover' from Cohen's fourth album - 1974's 'New Skin For The Old Ceremony'.
McCulloch's cover of 'Lover, Lover, Lover' was released as the second single from 'Mysterio' and the 12" and cd single featured two remixes by Mark 'Spike' Stent. The 'Indian Dawn Remix' is now available on the 'Candleland & 'Mysterio (Extended Editions)' on itunes. This remix transforms the song into a world music influenced dance track that still maintains the integrity of the original... Enjoy!
