Yesterday we featured a remix that was surely influenced by Giorgio Moroder's productions - today we feature the man himself as he's released a new song online called 'Giorgio's Theme'!
The song is the first release is a series of new singles - one per week for the next sixteen weeks - released by the cable network Adult Swim. This is the fifth year in a row that they've released a series of singles - all of which are made available as a free download.

SummersRadio™ New Video! Donna Summer - 'Love To Love You Baby' (Giorgio Moroder Featuring Chris Cox Remix)/ Donna Summer - 'I Feel Love' (Afrojack Remix)
A new video has been released online for the new 'Giorgio Moroder Remix' of Donna Summer's classic single 'Love To Love You Baby'! The remix is of course from the 'Love To Love You Donna' remix album which came out in October on Verve Records.
'Love To Love You Baby' was first released as the title track to Donna Summer's 1975 album and it later became one of the first disco hits to be released in an extended form - a seventeen minute sexual odyssey that became a massive club hit.
The original was produced by Giorgio Moroder - as is the new remix for 2013 - with some help from Chris Cox. This colourful new video is a nice tribute to both Donna Summer and a classic song newly remixed... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! Donna Summer -'I Feel Love' (Afrojack Remix) I wanted to feature this new remix when it first came out in October - but the only shareable clip was footage from a Creamfields show that just didn't seem to fit the song very well. Arthur's Landing has just released a new remix EP for the song 'Miracle 2'! Arthur's Landing are a Brooklyn future funk collective who record and perform the song's of Arthur Russell - who died in 1992 after spending two decades as part of New York City's underground dance and disco scenes.

SummersRadio™ New Music! Computer Magic - 'Another Science'
Brooklyn's wonderful Computer Magic has just released a new EP called
'A Million Years/ Another Science'! The four track EP includes the title track plus a remix by Chrome Canyon, as well as the previously featured song 'Everest' http://summersradio.blogspot.ca/2012/06/summersradio-new-music-computer-magic.html and this track called 'Another Science'.
'Another Science' sounds like it could be influenced by some of my favourite synth pop artists over the years including Giorgio Moroder, Gary Numan, Dot Allison and The Human League to name a few - and yet I reckon she sounds as fresh as a spring morning. The EP is self-released and available on iTunes now!
This new song and EP also reaffirm Computer Magic as one of my favourite bands to emerge in the last of couple years. 'Another Science' features great layered synths and lush production - and the beautiful vocals of singer Danz are the icing on the cake... Enjoy!

'Martin Gore' is the title track from James Benitez's latest EP, and the second track on the 'BluFin Loves Amsterdam 03' compilation - which features audio samples from an interview with the Depeche Mode mainstay. It doesn't sample Depeche Mode musically though - 'Martin Gore' has a hypnotic Giorgio Moroder influenced disco/ techno vibe with some nice Rinocerose style guitar bits - and even some bonus cowbell... SummersRadio™ Rare Remix! Donna Summer - 'Grand Illusion' (CD Extended Edit)
LaDonna Adrian Gaines aka Donna Summer passed away earlier today after a lengthy battle with cancer. Known as the 'Queen Of Disco' in the seventies, her influence on dance music is immeasurable - may she rest in peace.
Rather than feature one of her many hits I've chosen a rare remix (naturally) of one of my favorite Donna Summer songs - one which was never even a single. 'Grand Illusion' is a track from her 1980 album 'The Wanderer' and it was actually released as the b-side to the title track. The song was written by Summer and Giorgio Moroder and produced by Moroder and Pete Bellotte.
'Grand Illusion' is impeccably produced and it creates it own atmosphere - it's best to listen to it in the dark to feel the full effect :) This 'CD Extended Edit' takes the original song from just under four minutes of hypnotic mysteriousness - to over nine minutes of bliss... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Laurent Garnier featuring The L.B.S. Crew - 'Our Futur' (Detroit Mix)
France's techno legend Laurent Garnier is releasing a new EP called 'Timeless' on April 1st! 'Timeless' is a three track EP featuring 'Jacques In The Box' and two remixes of 'Our Futur' - the 'Loud Disco Mix' and the 'Detroit Mix' - and it's out on the Ed Banger Records label.

The feel of this song fits in well with the EP's name - as it certainly has a timeless quality to it. On one hand it seems a bit familiar - with it's Giorgio Moroder and early Detroit techno influences - musically speaking it sounds like it could be from some classic sci-fi film soundtrack. But it also sounds current - with the robotic vocal bits featuring positive lyrics about our future. It clocks in at over nine minutes long and suggests to me that the future could very well be quite the epic journey... :) Enjoy!

Chicago electronica/ techno legend Curtis Jones aka Green Velvet (among other monikers) has teamed up with San Diego dj/ producer Victor Ramos aka Harvard Bass for his newest release! I'm not a big fan of the vocal sample on the title track - I actually think they should have called this the 'Kickin It' EP - as it's the b-side that's the real standout here. The song is a classic disco/ house/ techno hybrid - think Giorgio Moroder style backing synths with classic Green Velvet soul filled vocals. The only thing I wish were different about this track was that it was twice as long - ten minutes instead of five (this video is edited slightly) because it's that awesome! Enjoy...!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Moby featuring Inyang Bassey - 'The Right Thing' (Sharam Jey Remix)/ Donna Summer - 'I Feel Love' (Patrick Cowley Remix)/ Moby - 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?' Moby has just released a new EP this week - for the latest single(s) from his 'Destroyed' album! The EP is a double A-side release for the songs 'The Right Thing' and 'After' - featuring five remixes of 'The Right Thing' and two of 'After' - making them the third and fourth singles respectively from his 'Destroyed' album, released on his own Little Idiot label.
If there's one thing I've learned about music it's that everything is a product of everything that's come before it. New songs (or portions of them) will almost always sound something like some older song - be it unintentional, inspired by, or simply a complete ripoff! And in clubland there's one song that's been imitated and duplicated far too many times to count - and justifiably so - Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love'. Today we have example # 3,789 (I counted) :) with the new 'Sharam Jey' remix of 'The Right Thing' (please note that this version is edited slightly - you get an extra minute and 15 seconds of disco flavored goodness on the EP!) ... Enjoy!
Bonus Track #1! Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love' was released as a single in the summer of 1977 at the height of the disco era - however there are some who say (myself included) that this song was also the birth of techno! The reason for this is as follows - previous disco hits had always included a backing band and/ or orchestra - but 'I Feel Love' was the first song of it's kind to use an entirely synthesized backing track.
The song was written by Summer - along with producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte - and first appeared on her concept album called 'I Remember Yesterday'. The album featured seven songs (plus one reprise) - five of which were released as singles. The following year Patrick Cowley remixed and extended the track from just under six minutes to 15:45 - and in the process (aside from perhaps the guitar solo) further developed it's techno blueprint. Most instrumental parts of this song stand up just fine against some of this year's finest new releases on labels like 1605 - and this remix is flipping 33 years old! This is the 'Patrick Cowley Remix' of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love' in it's full unedited glory... Enjoy!
Bonus Track #2! I had lunch with Moby once - he didn't eat anything though. True story. Picture it... Vancouver - summer of 1999. His album 'Play' had been released just two months prior and was selling modestly at best - but there were a few pockets in the country where it was doing really well including here (it later went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide). 'Bodyrock' had just been released as the second single, and as part of the album's promotion his record company arranged a meet and greet luncheon for selected music industry types. I remember thinking about what I might say to him when we first met - and how funny it was just thinking of saying the words 'Hi Moby'!
The lunch turned out to be a bit of an embarrassment for the record company - as it was well known that Moby was a vegan - and the restaurant didn't have anything on their menu that was! He asked for a few different options that they couldn't really accommodate - and then they offered to make a salad but that's not what he wanted, so he just had water! The coolest part was when I asked him if 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?' might be a future single because it was my favorite song on the album - and he said that it was going to be the next single and that they were making a fully animated video for it!

SummersRadio™ 500th Post Celebration! Concert Review/ Rare Remixes! The Human League - '(Keep Feeling) Fascination' (Groove Collision TMC Mix)/ 'Don't You Want Me' (Tommy Reye Remix)
If you're more than just a casual Human League fan, you'll know that they've actually had quite a number of hits - and they just kept coming Sunday night - along with numerous costume changes as well! After playing a couple more singles from their new album "Credo' they played their North American number one hit from 1986 'Human' - followed with 'Love Action (I Believe In Love)', then 'All I Ever Wanted' from their 2001 album 'Secrets' and 'Tell Me When' from their 1995 comeback album 'Octopus'. They pretty much stuck to the original versions of songs - no radical remixes - although a couple songs were extended a bit.
Hearing the opening bassline of '(Keep Feeling) Fascination' always cheers me up - here's a rare remix included on the U.K. bonus disc of their 2003 'Very Best Of' collection - this is the 'Groove Collision TMC Mix'... Enjoy!
'(Keep Feeling) Fascination' was followed with 'Mirror Man' and by the time they got into 'Don't You Want Me' the band was at risk of being totally drowned out by the crowd singing along! They did pretty much every song a fan would want to hear - the only other songs I wished they might have played were 'The Things That Dreams Are Made Of' and 'Louise' - which I have a total soft spot for - but then it wasn't much of a hit here in North America anyway.
The first encore featured Philip alone for a rendition of one of their earliest singles 'Being Boiled' - which was first released in 1978. Susan and Joanne then returned for a song originally credited to Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey - that has since become a concert staple for the band - 'Together In Electric Dreams'.
As a massive fan I loitered around afterwards in hopes of getting my '21st Anniversary Edition' of 'Dare' & 'Love And Dancing' autographed but the band slipped out too quickly. Luckily they were selling copies of 'Credo' - both regular and autographed - earlier so I picked up an autographed one (and a t-shirt of course) just in case they were in a hurry.
All in all it was pretty flawless show - my one small criticism would be that they didn't have any high tech lighting to match their high tech equipment - they just used the rather outdated house system at the Rickshaw. And no disrespect intended as both Joanne and Susan are amazing - pure class, but Susan needs to eat more or something - some of her outfits did not flatter her near anorexic frame. More importantly though, everyone's vocals are in fine form and if The Human League comes to town I highly recommend checking them out!
Here's the most extended of all the extended versions I've ever found of their signature song 'Don't You Want Me' - clocking in at 11 and a half minutes - this is the super extended 'Tommy Reye Remix'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Order! Who Did They Sample? New Order - 'Blue Monday' After posting the rare 'Blue Monday' remix below I figured it would be the perfect time to tell you about the awesome website called 'WhoSampled'! Their official address is whosampled.com http://www.whosampled.com/ and their tag line is 'Exploring and discussing the DNA of music'. Here's some info from their site on what it's all about if you're not already familiar with them:
'We're building the ultimate database of sampled music, remixes and cover songs. Dig deeper into music by discovering direct links among over 95,000 songs and 37,000 artists, from Hip-Hop and R&B via Electronic Music through to Rock, Pop, Funk, Soul, Jazz and beyond. Watch the videos, contribute new content, discuss and vote.'
Basically you can type in the name of any artist or song and it will list every artist that they've sampled and every artist who's sampled them. Of course not everything is in there yet, but it's constantly growing. Not only do they post the audio for the original song and the source of the sample - they also indicate at exactly what point in each song the sample occurs!
The interesting thing about New Order's 'Blue Monday' is that people generally believe it to be entirely a New Order composition - while they did write it - it features several obvious influences and samples from other songs. So here's few of the tracks that provided some of the elements that helped mold what became the club anthem we know as 'Blue Monday'...
The keyboard bit on the intro and extro was sampled from the Kraftwerk song 'Uranium' from their album 'Radio-Activity' which was released in 1975... Enjoy!
The kick drum beat was borrowed from Donna Summer's track 'Our Love' from her 'Bad Girls' album which was written and produced by Summer and Giorgio Moroder and from her 1979 album 'Bad Girls'. The kick drum sample appears 1:33 in - and even before that the keyboards sound a lot like another New Order track - 'Temptation' that was released as a single just prior to 'Blue Monday' - Enjoy!
The bassline was styled from Sylvester's 1978 disco classic 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)'...
And the overall arrangement of the song came from a song called 'Dirty Talk' by the Italian post-disco group Klein + M.B.O...
So although 'Blue Monday' was a groundbreaking record it was also influenced by and a fusion of many different sounds that came before it - mixing disco, new wave, synthpop and New York club music - to create a new club anthem. Just for kicks here's the excellent remix from Hardloor to remind us of how great all these influences sound stitched together... Enjoy!
SummersRadio™ Classic! Dead Or Alive - 'Lover Come Back To Me' (Evolution Mix) It has been said that no music is truly original. Every artist is influenced by everything they've ever heard, either consciously or subconsciously. A lot of new club tunes lately have reminded me of the production sounds of Giorgio Moroder and Bobby Orlando - and also the early production work of Stock Aitken Waterman - with artists like Divine and Dead Or Alive - before they turned themselves into a very bland hit factory.
(I actually started this post and saved it into drafts a couple times - but after posting a couple tracks from the new Poker Flat Recordings compilation 'Forward To The Past' earlier today I thought it was time to publish it!)
When I posted the new Hertz & Subway Baby song 'Rejoice' (yesterday) I was instantly reminded of this club classic from Dead Or Alive. 'Lover Come Back To Me' was released in 1985 as the follow up to their number one smash 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)' from their Youthquake album - and this particular remix is available on their 2003 hits compilation called 'Evolution'. The production is amazing on this one - I particularly love the breakdown about 3 and a half minutes in... Enjoy!
Try not to be too distracted by singer Pete Burns antics and compare the music to the new track from Hertz & Subway Baby..
