SummersRadio™ New Music! Soko - 'First Love Never Die'/ 'I Thought I Was An Alien'/ 'You Have A Power On Me'
Soko is releasing her debut album called 'I Thought I Was An Alien' on February 20th! Stephanie Sokolinski aka Soko is a French singer and actress currently based in Los Angeles. She released her first EP called 'Not Sokute' in 2007 - which contained five tracks including 'I'll Kill Her' which became a number one hit in Denmark, and was also popular in Australia and other parts of Europe.
'I Thought I Was An Alien' is her first full length album - featuring 15 tracks - and it will be released on the Because Music label. Soko's already made a number of exceptional videos for songs that will be featured on 'I Thought I Was An Alien' - and we'll take a look at three of them today.
Soko cites Daniel Johnston, Elliot Smith, The Magnetic Fields and Belle & Sebastian as some of the artists she enjoys and notes 'My depression.' under her influences. You can learn more about her on her Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/soko?sk=info
While some of her songs are indeed tales of lost love and loneliness - she also has others that are chocked full of sweet romance and humor. 'First Love Never Die' - is a song about the one love that we will always remember - our first. This song's video proves that you don't need millions of dollars, a parade of costume changes, explosions, and a hoard of backup dancers to make a great music clip.
This is the heartwarming video for the seventh song on her forthcoming album called 'First Love Never Die'... Enjoy!
This is the video for the title track from 'I Thought I Was An Alien' - a tale of alien romance shot by Soko and Spike Jonze entirely on her iPhone... Enjoy!
This is Soko's newest video, released earlier this month for the closing track on the album - this is 'You Have A Power On Me'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Beats Antique/ Bassnectar!
SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Bassnectar - 'Voodoo' (Beats Antique Remix) Oakland's experimental electronic trio Beats Antique are performing in Vancouver tonight at the Commodore! The band consists of producers David Satori, Sidecar Tommy, and world-renowned belly dance performer/ producer Zoe Jakes - who helped inspire the thematic Middle East tempo of the band.
They describe their unique sound as 'a masterful merge of modern technology, live instrumentation and seductive performance. Beats Antique combines the sounds of the Middle East and orchestral gypsy music with the styles of hip-hop, brass band, downtempo, glitch and dubstep in a new collage of music that is mixed and broken down with ...clever breakbeats for an adept international flair. Beats Antique is producing an un-charted style of music by adding live horns, accordion, glockenspiel, viola, string quartets, kalimba, clarinet and various unusual instruments to their big beat arrangements'. So it sounds like this is going to be quite the show - you can learn more about the band and keep up with them on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/beatsantiquefans
This is a remix Beats Antique recently did for Bassnectar's 'Divergent Spectrum Remixes EP' - a five track EP that was released on January 12th. If their remix of 'Voodoo' below is to your liking you can get a free download copy by clicking on the link below - or better still go to Bassnectar's official site to download a free copy of the entire remix EP here: http://www.bassnectar.net/2012/01/divergent-spectrum-remixes/

SummersRadio™ New Music + New Remix! Manuel De La Mare & Alex Kenji! + Hardfloor!
SummersRadio™ New Music + New Remix! Manuel De La Mare & Alex Kenji - 'Acid As 303' (Original Club Mix)/ Hardfloor - 'Acperience 1' (Robert Babicz Spacefunk Remix)
Italy's Manuel De La Mare and Alex Kenji have just released the first acid techno monster club tune of 2012! 'Acid As 303' was just released on Monday and in just five days it's already lept into the top 3 on Beatport's top 100 techno chart. The one track single is released on Toolroom Records - and the label aptly describes the song as a 'beast of a tune'.
This is the 'Original Club Mix' of the rather awesome song 'Acid As 303'... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! Hardfloor - 'Acperience 1' (Robert Babicz Spacefunk Remix)
Germany's Hardfloor have released a new remix of their acid techno classic 'Acperience 1'! 'Acperience 1' first appeared as the first of four numbered versions of the track on the 'Hardtrance Acperience EP', which was released in 1992 on the Harthouse label.
Last month they released the new 'Two Decades Edition' EP of the track on their own self titled label. The EP features two tracks - this new remix from Robert Babicz, plus the original. This is the 'Robert Babicz Spacefunk Remix' of 'Acperience 1' - it's pretty faithful to the original, as perhaps should be the case with such a classic - but it also has just enough different bits to keep it fresh...
Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Saint Etienne!
SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Saint Etienne - 'Tonight'/ 'Stars Above Us'/ 'Like A Motorway' (Alternative Version) London's Saint Etienne have just released their latest single online - from their first album of all new material in seven years! Saint Etienne are one of my most absolute favorite bands of all time, so this is pretty thrilling news I must say!
I was lucky enough to meet them on their 'Sound Of Water' tour in 2000, and they're all so incredibly charming - they signed all of my cd's and Sarah Cracknell signed her solo cd's as well. She also provided me with one of my most amazing - and surreal - concert moments ever. I was working as a buyer at the Virgin Megastore at the time, and they came by the store in the afternoon. That night when they came out on stage at the now demolished club Richard's On Richards (I was right in front of course) the first two words Sarah said into the mic were 'Hi Jim'! She remembered me - and my name! ♥ Swoon ♥ :)
'Tonight' is the first single from their forthcoming new studio album (their eighth) called 'Words And Music By Saint Etienne' which is set for release in May. The album will be preceded by another single next month called 'I've Got Your Music'.
Bob Stanley describes the single on their website thusly: 'Tonight is about the anticipation of going to see your favourite group. For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life.'
'Tonight' starts off with some beautiful strings and is soon chugging along with some catchy dance beats and Sarah Cracknell's always lovely vocals. It captures not only the anticipation of seeing a great concert, but also the anticipation of their first new album in seven years - 'it's been too long' indeed! If 'Tonight' is to your liking you can download a copy for free for a limited time from their official website here: http://www.saintetienne.com/ and you can also keep up with them on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/SaintEtienneOfficial?ref=ts
I hope there are some club remixes in the works for this song - and if it doesn't make the top 20 in the U.K. there's no hope for popular music! Well, this is the hope right here - even if it's only popular in an underground sort of way :) This is Saint Etienne's excellent new single 'Tonight'... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! 'Stars Above Us' was one of the singles released from their last studio album - 2005's 'Tales From Turnpike House' - a concept album based around a number of characters living in a block of flats in an area of London known as Turnpike House... Enjoy!
Classic! 'Like A Motorway' was the second single and video released from their 1994 album 'Tiger Bay'. This is the 'Alternative Version' - an extended dance remix that was included on the North American version of 'Tiger Bay'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Bran Van 3000/ JPOD & The Funk Hunters!
SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Bran Van 3000 - 'Drinking In L.A.' (JPOD & The Funk Hunters Remix)/ 'Supermodel' The Funk Hunters and JPOD aka 'The Beat Chef' have released a new remix of Bran Van 3000's classic single 'Drinking In L.A.'!
'Drinking In L.A.' was the first single released from Bran Van 3000 - a Montreal based electronica collective - from their debut album called 'Glee', which was released in Canada in 1997. 'Glee' was released internationally the following year with different cover art and a couple bonus tracks, and 'Drinking In L.A.' went on to reach the top three in the U.K. charts in 1999.
The Funk Hunters are a Vancouver dj/ production duo consisting of Duncan Smith aka Dunks and Nick Middleton aka The Outlier. They're known for their four turntable live dj sets and they embrace a wide range of styles including funk, house, disco, hip hop, dubstep, and drum and bass. If this remix - a collaboration with fellow B.C. native JPOD - is to your liking you can get a free download from their Facebook page here:
http://www.facebook.com/thefunkhunters?sk=app_178091127385
This is the 'JPOD & The Funk Hunters Remix' of Bran Van 3000's 'Drinking In L.A.'... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! Bran Van 3000 - 'Supermodel' BV3's 'Glee' album is/ was a truly groundbreaking/ genre smashing masterpiece, so it came as no surprise that they were later signed to the Beastie Boys Grand Royal label for the release of their second album 'Discosis'. Even though it's 15 years on now, I still listen to it on a regular basis and 'Supermodel' is one of it's many highlights.
The song tells the story of a small town/ city girl who gets discovered, but it also comments on the shallowness of such pursuits while mixing country, hip hop, electronica, samples, and beautiful harmonies to create a uniquely classic song... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Rare Remix + Free Download! DJ Shadow/ Z-Trip! DJ Shadow - 'Right Thing' (Z-Trip 'Set The Party Off' Remix In Three Parts) Z-Trip has just released a rare remix he did for DJ Shadow online as a free download!
'Right Thing' first appeared as 'Right Thing/ GDMFSOB' - the ninth track on DJ Shadow's 2002 album 'The Private Press'. This remix is from the rare remix album called 'The Private Repress' which was only released in Japan the following year.
I particularly like the opening vocal sample here about the sheer abundance of music and diggers. This is the excellent 'Z-Trip 'Set The Party Off' Remix In Three Parts' of DJ Shadow's 'Right Thing'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Kate Bush/ Mighty Mouse!
SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Kate Bush/ Mighty Mouse! Kate Bush - 'Cloudbusting' (Mighty Mouse Re Work) From 'Little Fluffy Clouds' to 'Cloudbusting'... London's Mighty Mouse 'is a Disco loving, cheese eating psychedelic mouse from Space' (his own words) who's just released his latest remix - of Kate Bush's 'Cloudbusting' - online!
'Cloudbusting' was first released as a single from Kate Bush's album 'Hounds Of Love' in 1985. It was then famously sampled and turned into a club hit by Utah Saints in 1992 - and again in 2008 - with their song 'Something Good', which you can revisit here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/10/summersradio-music-news-rare-remix.html
Mighty Mouse describes this new remix as 'Nu Disco Battle Front' and if it's to your liking you can download a copy for free from his Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/mightymouse-1/kate-bush-cloudbusting-mighty and you can keep up with him on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/wearemightymouse
This also seems like a perfectly apt time to mention one of my all time favorite remixes - of Kate Bush's 2005 single 'King Of The Mountain' - which I'm happy to say ranks as one of my top 10 most viewed blog posts! You can check out/ revisit the 'Kick Inside Remix' of it here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/04/summersradio-rare-remix-kate-bush.html

Ok - enough links! :) This is the new 'Mighty Mouse Re Work' of 'Cloudbusting'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! The Orb!
SummersRadio™ Classic! The Orb - 'Little Fluffy Clouds' (Live Remix) 'What were the skies like when you were young?' If you didn't already know SummersRadio™ transmits (as it were) from Club English Bay on beautiful English Bay in Vancouver's west end. This picture was taken recently from my livingroom window - and it reminded me of this classic from The Orb - not for the fluffy clouds so much as the vibrant colours and the line 'The most beautiful skies as a matter of fact'.
'Little Fluffy Clouds' was first released as a single in 1990 and was included on The Orb's debut album 'Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld' in 1991. It was re-released in 1993, and numerous remixes have also been released over the years. This is a very cool fan made video featuring some amazing time lapse footage... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Music News + Rare Remix! Brendan Benson!
SummersRadio™ Music News + Rare Remix! Brendan Benson - 'Metarie'/ 'Metarie' (Alpha's Dub Mix)/ 'Alternative To Love'/ 'Garbage Day'
Brendan Benson has announced that he's releasing his new studio album - his fifth - called 'What Kind Of World' on April 21st! The album is released on his own Readymade Music label - which was born in the 90's when Benson released his very first demos on 12" singles with The Wellfed Boys. This year the label goes worldwide with releases from both himself and other artists - including Young Hines - the first signed to the label. You can keep up with Brendan and his label develpments on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/brendanbensonmusic
Brendan is perhaps best known these days as the co-founder of The Raconteurs - with Jack White (of the White Stripes) - but I'm more partial to his solo work. There isn't any new music available from his forthcoming album just yet, so instead we'll feature a few of his finest songs released over the years - including a rare remix!
'Metarie' is the first Brendan Benson song I heard - and I fell in love with it instantly! Several different recordings of the song have been made, including some with different lyrics. There's the 'Wellfed Version' recorded with The Wellfed Boys in 2003, 'U.K. Version', 'Fred de Faye Mix', 'Demo Version', 'Alternative Version' and the rather rare 'Alpha's Dub Mix' (which I will feature below).
I think a couple of them might actually be the same version with a different name - there's so many that it can be a challenge to sort them all - but it's the version from his 2002 album 'Lapalco' that is most to my liking. I love the female backing vocals on this version, it has a warmer production feel to it than some of the others, and I think it flows more smoothly (perfectly in fact!) as well - but this might just be because it was the first version I heard.
This is the album version of 'Metarie'... Enjoy!
This is the rare 'Alpha's Dub Mix' by Alpha - which was included on the U.K. cd single for 'Metarie'. It's a dub mix not so much in a club remix sense - although it does feature fewer overall lyrics than the original, and it repeats a key line or two as many dub versions of club songs will do - but more dub sounding as in the reggae style. One might describe it as trip hop as well - with Alpha being from Bristol and all... Enjoy!
Brendan Benson - Metarie (Alpha's Dub Mix) by SummersRadio™
'Alternative To Love', a song about the neverending seach for true love, was first released as a b-side of the 'Metarie' EP/ single - but was later re-recorded and became the title track (sans 'The') of his 2005 album 'The Alternative To Love'. Brendan's sound is often described as power pop - with influences noted to include artists such as The Cars, Wings, E.L.O., and David Bowie. I like how the bass and occasional hihat give the song a danceable, almost (subtle) disco feel... Enjoy!
'Garbage Day' is a track from his previous most recent solo album (after releasing two albums with The Raconteurs) - 2009's 'My Old, Familiar Friend'. Any regular reader will likely know by now that I'm a fan of well used/ placed strings - as 'Garbage Day' has in abundance. You can certainly hear an E.L.O. influcence here - but it also has a nice Motown feel to it as well... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Hellomonkey! + Pe & Ban and DJ Mandraks!
SummersRadio™ New Music! Hellomonkey - 'Yes' (Original Mix)/ Pe & Ban and DJ Mandraks - 'The Sound Of The Drums' (Original Mix)
1605 Music Therapy are off to a fiery hot start (it is going to be the year of the dragon afterall - although one of the artists name's here involves a monkey!) in 2012 with a brand new mini compilation called 'Platform Vol. 1'! (currently available exclusively on Beatport here: http://www.beatport.com/#release/sixteenofive-platform-vol-1/853544) It's actually the first release in a new series from the label - of samplers featuring all new tracks. Volume one features five new songs - which 1605 describes as '5 tracks of grade-A techno and tech house' - and I agree with them 100%!
Although all five tracks on 'Platform Vol. 1' are really good, I've chosen my two favorite songs to post - the first and last tracks on the compilation/ EP - but I shall begin with the last, and finish with the first. :) This is track five on the EP from Hellomonkey (aka Andrewboy aka Lucky Orgia) - an artist from Budapest Hungary - and this is his new song called 'Yes'. I like the rather minimal yet positive lyrics - especially with the awesome production around 3:15 in... Enjoy!
This is the first track on the 'Platform Vol. 1' mini compilation/ EP - from Pe & Ban and DJ Mandraks - who all hail from Brazil - called 'The Sound Of The Drums'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Rare Remix/ Remixes! David Bowie!
SummersRadio™ Rare Remix/ Remixes! David Bowie - 'Fame '90' (Absolutely Nothing Premeditated/ Epic Mix)/ 'I'm Afraid Of Americans' (V1)/ 'Hallo Spaceboy' (PSB Remix) It's David Bowie's birthday! David Robert Jones aka David Bowie was born in London in 1947 - so he's 65 today! We shall celebrate his lengthy, distinguished career with a few selections - three remixes (one quite rare) from his great body of work.
First up we have 'Fame '90' - a rare remix called the 'Absolutely Nothing Premeditated/ Epic Mix' - and it is indeed epic - clocking in at a massive 14 minutes and 26 seconds! 'Fame' was first released as a single in 1975 from his 'Young Americans' album - and it became his first number one single in North America.
I don't recall what year the 'Fame '90' remixes came out :) but I do know that they were released on various formats including cd, 7", and 12" singles - and they featured remixes from the likes of D.J. Mark "The 45 King" (which also featured vocals from the always lovely Queen Latifah), Ron Fair, Arthur Baker, Jon Gass, and this remix from David Barrett.
There is an EP for 'Fame '90' available on itunes but it features the 'Bonus Beat Mix' instead of this most excellent and now out of print 'Absolutely Nothing Premeditated/ Epic Mix'... Enjoy!
David Bowie - 'Fame '90' (Absolutely Nothing Premeditated / Epic Mix) by SummersRadio™
'I'm Afraid Of Americans' was co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno in 1995 during the 'Outside' recording sessions, and a rough mix of it appears on the soundtrack to 'Showgirls' - with the slighty different, less political lyric 'I'm afraid of the animals'. It didn't see a proper release until it was re-recorded and included on his 1997 album 'Earthling'.
When the cd and 12" singles were released in North America they featured six new (non-album) remixes - numbered V1 - V6 - including remixes from Nine Inch Nails (three of them), Dave 'Rave' Ogilvie, and Photek. This is the 'V1' remix (available on itunes) by Trent Reznor, who also appears in the video - which was inspired by the film 'Taxi Driver' - as a creepy stalker character... Enjoy!
'Hallo Spaceboy' first appeared as a track on 'Outside', but when it was released as a single in the U.K. and Europe the following year, it was re-recorded and radically remixed by the Pet Shop Boys as a more dance friendly song, that featured additional vocals from PSB's Neil Tennant. I love the lines 'Do you like girls or boys? It's confusing these days'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Sound Remedy!
SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Sound Remedy - 'I5' L.A.'s Sound Remedy has just released his first new recording of 2012! The song is called 'I5' (I believe it refers to the Interstate 5 highway which runs along the west coast from just south of here in Vancouver - in Washington state - all the way to Mexico) and it's from his forthcoming new album called 'Haunted Valor' - AND as a bonus he's made the song available as a free download!
'I5' embraces a mix of styles - as Sound Remedy will do. You can revisit his excellent remix of Nirvana's 'All Apologies' here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/10/summersradio-new-remix-new-music-free.html (includes free download)
The song is an uplifting mix of electronic, house and techno - and it's perfect for a chilled Sunday afternoon/ evening. He describes it on his Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SilversixDJ?sk=wall#!/soundremedy) thusly:
'If Your Are Ever Feeling Down Just Close Your Eyes And Drift Away.... I Promise I Have The Remedy'. If 'I5' is to your liking you can download a copy for free from Sound Remedy's Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/soundremedy/sound-remedy-i5

SummersRadio™ It's 2012! Rare Remix! Chic!
SummersRadio™ It's 2012! Rare Remix! Chic - 'Good Times' (2004 Remix) So it's 2012. Some people think that the world is going to end this year - on Dec. 21st to be precise. (so if even if 'they' are right there's still lots of time!) Personally I don't buy into it - you see there have been several notable times over the years when the world was scheduled to end - and countless less notable ones. (see May 21st of last year: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/05/summersradio-end-of-world.html) And the one thing that each prediction has in common is that none of them came true - if we don't remember the past we're bound to repeat the same mistakes.
In the 70's the world was supposed to be taken over by robots. Sure 'they took our jobs' (some of them) but four decades later they've yet to overpower us humans. In the 80's there was the whole 'Brave New World' thing - and when nothing happened in 1984, the fear was rescheduled for 85 - but nothing happened then either. And of course there was the ongoing fear of nuclear war, and then in 1999 there was that nasty Y2K bug - but no planes fell from the sky and the world didn't end then either.
So now it's 2012 - and I'm willing to wager that we'll pretty much all still be here this time in 2013. I would like to share a quote that a wise person once said outside of my tent at the Soundwave Music Festival on Vancouver Island - 'If you're going to perpare for the worst, then you might as well prepare for the best as well'. Sound advice I'd say.
By the time Chic's 'Good Times' was released from their album called 'Risque' in the summer of 1979, the fear of robots had pretty much subsided. The song was a massive number one hit - it's been a huge influence on both dance and rap music - and it has gone on to become one of the most sampled songs of all time. 'Good Times' has famously been used as the backing track for the Sugarhill Gang's classic 'Rapper's Delight' and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's '...On The Wheels Of Steel'. It also inspired two other massive hits - Blondie's 'Rapture' and Queen's 'Another One Bites The Dust' - and even Daft Punk's club anthem 'Around The World'!
This disco house remix was released as a limited white label 12" single (actually the label was more of a light blue!) in the U.S. in 2004. This is the peppy '2004 Remix' of 'Good Times' - aside from the aforementioned quote, my advice for 2012 would simply be 'Party On'... Enjoy!
p.s. when I've fully recovered from last night's shenanigans I shall begin Part Two of the Best Of 2011 Countown - the Top 25 Electronic & Club tunes of the year - so keep your dancing shoes near! Stay tuned.

Stay tuned.

SummersRadio™ Happy New Year! Classic/ Rare Remix! World Party!
SummersRadio™ Happy New Year! Classic/ Rare Remix! World Party - 'Thank You World' (Remix) This is a rare remix of 'Thank You World' - the title track from World Party's now out of print nine track 1991 EP - remixed by Peter Lorimer.
The song has some great reflective lyrics and features some amazing trippy production. I particularly like the vocal sample exclusive to this remix that begins at 3:47 in - especially the line regarding the eyebrow pencil starting with 'Oh yeah - you could say I've got stress...'.
Enjoy!
