SummersRadio™ Classic Remix! Pet Shop Boys - 'I Want A Dog' (Frankie Knuckles Remix)

Some sad news in the dance music world today - Chicago house legend Frankie Knuckles aka `The Godfather Of House` has passed away at age 59.

'I Want A Dog' first appeared as a b-side to the Pet Shop Boys 1987 single 'Rent', but it's the 'Frankie Knuckles Remix' - produced and remixed by Knuckles - that made it onto their 1988 album 'Introspective'.

                   

Knuckles version of 'I Want A Dog' features sublime production and a great piano solo and I consider it to be one of the finest remixes of his career - may he rest in peace.

Pet Shop Boys have just released a new song online featuring Panti Bliss! Rory O'Neill aka Panti Bliss is an Irish drag entertainer and gay rights activist who gave a speech last month condemning homophobia in Ireland. His ten minute speech entitled 'Noble Call' soon went viral and the Pet Shop Boys have just added their own music to turn the speech into a dance song called 'The Best Gay Possible'.

Pet Shop Boys are releasing a new EP for their latest single 'Thursday' on November 5th! The ironic duo have been releasing singles rapid-fire style as 'Thursday' is now the fourth single released from their latest album 'Electric'.

Pet Shop Boys have just released their new studio album 'Electric' this week! 'Electric' is the ironic duo's twelfth studio album and it's released on their own x2 label distributed by Kobalt Label Services. PSB wanted to make a dance record this time out (as opposed to last year's rather somber 'Elysium') so they enlisted Stuart Price to produce. Early reviews have been extremely positive and going by the first two days sales the NME has reported that it's currently set to debut in the Top 3 in the U.K. - possibly even at number one!

'Love Is A Bourgeois Construct' is one of 'Electric's standout tracks - like most of the songs on the album it has an uplifting feel to it. Despite being more of a club record thankfully there are still a number of songs featuring their always clever lyrics - only the Pet Shop Boys could write a song about love using words like 'riffraff' and 'penal code'... Pet Shop Boys have just released their new single called 'Axis' today! 'Axis' is the first single from their forthcoming new album (their twelfth) called 'Electric', which will be released on July 15th through Kobalt Label Services. The album is produced by Stuart Price (aka Jacques Lu Cont, etc.) and PSB - it features nine tracks including a cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'The Last To Die'. Pet Shop Boys are already touring in support of 'Electric' and they've just announced a Vancouver date - at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on October 3rd. Pre-sale tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at Ticketmaster.

It's great to see the duo moving on from the blandness of last year's 'Elysium' so quickly. 'Axis' is certainly their most full on dance single in some time, and if the full album has this much energy it sounds like they've got a winner - for real this time...

SummersRadio™ Music News! Pet Shop Boys - 'Electric' Video Teaser

London's ironic duo Pet Shop Boys have made a couple of surprising announcements today - they're leaving their label Parlophone after 28 years - and they're releasing a new album in June - less than a year after 'Elysium'!

                       

PSB made the announcements on Facebook today - they've just signed a new worldwide record deal with the Kobalt Music Group which was founded in 2001 and is home to other artists such as Paul McCartney, Moby, Tiesto, James Murphy, Pearl Jam and Bon Ivor.

Even more surprising is that they're releasing a new album called 'Electric' in June - just nine months after the release of their eleventh studio album 'Elysium'. This is odd because the average wait between new PSB studio albums has been three years. In some ways though this is no surprise at all - just tremendous news for fans.

If you follow SummersRadio™ regularly you'll know I'm a massive PSB fan - but I also found most of their last album to be unbearable. Too much of it was far too bland and lifeless. Maybe Parlophone urged them to do an adult contemporary album or something (who knows) but it's starting to look like a bit of a contractual obligation album - not that that in itself is an excuse for releasing a craptacular album!

I applaud the move - it's great that they're so eager to release a new album so quickly. It looks like they're doing exactly what two intelligent, talented musicians should do here - distance themselves from the last album and make a better one chop-chop!  'Electric' will be released in June on both cd and as a download and it's produced by Stuart Price (aka Jacques Lu Cont and many more) who's worked with artists including Madonna, The Killers, Kylie Minogue, Scissor Sisters and New Order. Price also reedited their most recent single 'Memory Of The Future' and produced the megamix they performed at the Brit Awards in 2009 when they received the 'Outstanding Contribution To Music' award.  

So Pet Shop Boys are returning to their roots... clubland! Here's a video teaser for 'Electric' that the band posted today. It certainly sounds promising as a livelier dance focused album - and dare I say that the music here sounds more exciting than the rather dated disco featured in Daft Punk's new teaser... Enjoy!

The Pet Shop Boys have released several new remix packages for their latest single 'Leaving'! 'Leaving' is the second official single from their latest album 'Elysium' and it's available on a number of formats including on 7" and 12" vinyl, a two part cd single, and a three part digital EP - 'Leaving', 'Leaving Remixed' and 'Leaving Again'. The 'Lost Her Love Remix' is from the 'Leaving Remixed' EP and cd single.

I have a lot of love for this duo - not many artists have a remix this amazing on their 55th single - yes, their 55th single! I was hoping that some remixes might save 'Leaving' from being anything more than pablum - and this new 'Lost Her Love Remix' by Italian dj/ producer Dusty Kid exceeds all expectations! He catapults the original into another galaxy - this eleven and a half minute journey includes multi-layered keyboards, vocoder and even some cowbell that eventually leads to one of my most favourite places... spacey acid techno territory - it's bliss! SummersRadio™ New Music! Pet Shop Boys - 'Memory Of The Future'

Pet Shop Boys have released their eleventh studio album called 'Elysium' this week! That's the good news. The bad news is that they've lost their irony! I couldn't stand the album's first single 'Winner' and I deemed it unpostworthy. I reckon that I'm not the only fan who felt that way as it debuted at #86 on the U.K. Singles Top 100 - and then vanished the very next week - far and away their worst chart placing for a lead single off of a proper album ever.

I'm waiting to hear the remixes of the next scheduled single 'Leaving' (released October 15th) before deciding on that one. How can the Ironic Duo write a song called 'Winner' without any irony in it anyway? Blasphemous!

As a lifelong fan I still love them overall, but they've lost their way here - for the first time they sound old. 'Elysium' is their first album recorded in America - and I beg them never to do so again. It was produced by Andrew Dawson in Los Angeles who's worked with Kanye West, Jay Z, Snoop Dogg (although you'd never guess from the lack of beats here) and 30 Seconds To Mars (!) to name a few - so he's to blame.

Some people are comparing the album to the brilliance of 'Behaviour' - perhaps simply because it's laid back - but on that album they sang about NOT being boring. 'Elysium' is no paradise (as the title suggests) it's just too lifeless - far too adult contemporary. It would be a good album to put on if you want to take a nap. I feel guilty saying that but it's a case of cruel to be kind. As a former music journalist surely Neil Tennant would want me to be honest here - not every artist's new album is their best ever - even though they're always promoted that way.

However I admit that I still need to give the album more time to grow on me, but I can't ever imagine listening to the album's eighth track 'Hold On' without cringing. There is one song that was to my liking immediately though - 'Memory Of The Future' - the tenth track on the album (perhaps because it's one of the few with a pulse). It's classic Pet Shop Boys - with it's gurgling synths, beautiful strings, disco hi-hats, and romantic but not sappy lyrics - I reckon it sounds like it could be track seven on 'Introspective'... SummersRadio™ It's My Party! Saint Etienne - 'Over The Border'/ 'I've Got Your Music' (official video)

Today is my birthday and while I'm not having a party per se I've got at least two related posts planned before I become comfortably numb and/ or too sedated to post anything! :)

If you check out SummersRadio™ regularly you probably already know that London's Saint Etienne are one of my all time favorite bands - and their latest album 'Words And Music By...' (released in May) is one of the finest of their career. It's basically a concept album about music - which when you think about it isn't as common as one might initially think.

Bob Stanley has said that 'The general theme of the album is marking a route in your life through music' - hence the map on the cover art - which contains a total of 312 song titles! The opening track 'Over The Border' is my most favorite - as Sarah Cracknell's voice is always beautiful - but it's equally magical when she speaks (which we rarely get to hear) and here she tells a brief history of her life in music. Naturally I can relate as my entire life has revolved around music - every song is a memory - so many albums are a part of me.

So 'Over The Border' is a fitting birthday post song - as she talks about getting older - and doing so many things that I remember vividly as well - buying my first records - memorizing charts - and so on. It's an exquisite song that any massive music lover at any age can relate to... Enjoy!



Bonus Track/ New Video! 'I've Got Your Music' is the second single and video (I hope that 'Over The Border is the third!) released from their new album. The concept for the video is a simple but effective one - the band invited fans to send them a video clip of you holding up the cover of one of your all time favorite records. It's fun to see how many you can recognize - and I'm clearly not the only fan who also loves fellow Londoners the Pet Shop Boys as well... Enjoy!

Pet Shop Boys have just released a new song online! 'Invisible' is not the first official single, but it is the first new track that the band have posted online from their forthcoming new album called 'Elysium' - their eleventh proper studio album - which will be released in September.

'Invisible' is perhaps the most laid back affair they've ever recorded - featuring lyrics about escaping the spotlight and the joys of solitude and getting older - and although it's not a single they've also made of video for it... Enjoy!



Bonus Track! Here's another song that was never a single - 'Here' is from their 2002 release called err... 'Release'. It so should have been a single so I was pleased when they released the  'PSB New Extended Mix' of it on 'Disco 3' the following year. I love the depth of sincerity in the lyrics:

London's Blur have just announced that they're releasing a massive boxed set on July 30th called 'Blur 21:The Box'! The 21 (!) disc set is being released - and all seven of their studio albums are being reissued - to celebrate 21 years since the release of their debut album 'Leisure'.

Here's what the incredible boxed set will contain:

• All seven newly expanded two-disc studio albums
• Four discs of rarities, exclusive to this set. Includes 3½ hours of previously unreleased material
• Three DVDs including over 2 hours of previously unreleased footage. Includes two pivotal live shows and an exclusive disc of video rarities.
• Collectable 7" single of the rare and previously unreleased live recording of the Seymour-era track Superman.
• Deluxe hard-bound book telling the story of Blur's 21 year career with extensive liner notes based on a brand new interviews with the band, illustrated with imagery of the era, including some previously unseen photos

I love Blur so this looks amazing - but the big question is how much is it?!? That I can't tell you just yet, as there aren't any prices listed thus far. However if it's unreasonable you do have other physical options. Each cd is also going to be re-released individually with a second bonus disc featuring both rarities and previously unreleased material. Each album will also be re-released on vinyl - and there's also a vinyl boxed set available - however the vinyl releases do not include all the bonus material.

I've chosen three somewhat rare remixes from their career - and all three will be included on the corresponding album's respective bonus disc. 'Think Tank' was the band's seventh album and their last before breaking up, which was released in 2003.

'Me, White Noise' has always been a bit of a tricky track to locate as it appears on the cd release as a pre-gap hidden track at the start of the disc. However some cd players will recognize it, but most do not - so even if you own the cd you may have never heard this song! Even on itunes there are two 'Think Tank' releases - one without the track - and another where it appears at the end as track 14.

This 'Alternate Version' was included on the dvd single for 'Good Song' and differs from the original in that it does not include the ramblings of actor Phil Daniels (who provided the spoken word vocals on one of their earlier singles 'Parklife'). I've always loved this track as it's more dancey and electronic than the rest of the album - and I love it when Damon says 'because I've got no facking choice'... Enjoy!



'Girls And Boys' was released as the first single from their third album 'Parklife' in 1994. This 'Pet Shop Boys 12" Mix' was originally included on the European and American cd singles for the song - and it will now be available on the bonus disc for 'Parklife' on July 30th... Enjoy!



'I Know' was the b-side to Blur's very first single - 'She's So High' - which was released in 1990. This 'Extended Mix' appeared on the cd and 12" single and will be included on the bonus disc for 'Leisure' on July 30th - 21 years after it's original release... Enjoy!

First up we have 'Fame '90' - a rare remix called the 'Absolutely Nothing Premeditated/ Epic Mix' - and it is indeed epic - clocking in at a massive 14 minutes and 26 seconds! 'Fame' was first released as a single in 1975 from his 'Young Americans' album - and it became his first number one single in North America.

I don't recall what year the 'Fame '90' remixes came out :) but I do know that they were released on various formats including cd, 7", and 12" singles - and they featured remixes from the likes of D.J. Mark "The 45 King" (which also featured vocals from the always lovely Queen Latifah), Ron Fair, Arthur Baker, Jon Gass, and this remix from David Barrett.

There is an EP for 'Fame '90' available on itunes but it features the 'Bonus Beat Mix' instead of this most excellent and now out of print 'Absolutely Nothing Premeditated/ Epic Mix'... Enjoy!

                      

David Bowie - 'Fame '90' (Absolutely Nothing Premeditated / Epic Mix) by SummersRadio™

'I'm Afraid Of Americans' was co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno in 1995 during the 'Outside' recording sessions, and a rough mix of it appears on the soundtrack to 'Showgirls' - with the slighty different, less political lyric 'I'm afraid of the animals'. It didn't see a proper release until it was re-recorded and included on his 1997 album 'Earthling'.

When the cd and 12" singles were released in North America they featured six new (non-album) remixes - numbered V1 - V6 - including remixes from Nine Inch Nails (three of them), Dave 'Rave' Ogilvie, and Photek. This is the 'V1' remix (available on itunes) by Trent Reznor, who also appears in the video - which was inspired by the film 'Taxi Driver' - as a creepy stalker character... Enjoy!



'Hallo Spaceboy' first appeared as a track on 'Outside', but when it was released as a single in the U.K. and Europe the following year, it was re-recorded and radically remixed by the Pet Shop Boys as a more dance friendly song, that featured additional vocals from PSB's Neil Tennant. I love the lines 'Do you like girls or boys? It's confusing these days'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Music News! Pet Shop Boys - 'Blue On Blue'/ 'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas' (New Version) London's Pet Shop Boys have just announced that they're releasing a new compilation in February! It's called 'Format' and is a collection of b-sides and bonus tracks - featuring 38 songs available on a double cd and download.

Few duo's are talented enough to have a career as lengthy as Pet Shop Boys have - let alone have as many b-sides worthy of such a compilation. 'Format' is essentially the follow up to the 1995 double cd release called 'Alternative' - which collected the duo's b-sides from 1985 to 1994 - as it covers their b-sides and bonus tracks released between 1996 and 2009. All 38 tracks are remastered and the cd booklet will feature an interview with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe by Jon Savage - author of 'England's Dreaming' and 'Teenage'. Here's one of my more recent favorite PSB b-sides - this is 'Blue On Blue' - originally the b-side of their 2006 single 'Minimal' (and soon to be track 12 on disc two). It's production is very old school - reminiscent of their early pre-'Please' recordings with legendary New York producer Bobby Orlando... Enjoy!



Bonus Track! 'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas' (New Version) As much as I love many different types and styles of music, truth be told I'm not much of a fan of Christmas music. I find most of it quite terrible, and some of it even borderline offensive!

I feel the same way about Christmas itself - if it was just one day a year of related good times that would be awesome - but it's two full months of relentless advertising and whoopla every single flipping year. THAT'S ONE SIXTH OF OUR LIVES people - for one day. It should only be 1/365th of our lives - pehaps a titch more in leap years :) I think a lot more humans would actually enjoy it if it was. So if you plan on living to be 100 like myself, you'll likely be hearing about Christmas for 16.666 years of your life - sounds a bit (dare I say it) evil - doesn't it? I don't get why more people don't full on rebel against the ridonkulousness of it's relentless overhyping. No offence of course if you love every minute of it.

Consequently, when I started seeing some bloggers posting Christmas music last month I felt that they should have been hung up by their collective sacs. So it may not surprise you then that I posted a mere three Christmas songs last year - and I'm thinking I'll stick with that (tradition) this year. A trio is plenty - and as it's only two days away now, I figure that it's a reasonable time (for me) to begin to acknowledge the holiday's existence.

'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas' was first released as a fan club only single in 1997, but it was later remixed for an official release on their 2009 'Christmas' EP. I particularly like this as a Christmas song lyrically speaking because it takes a pretty realistic snapshot of the holidays, and I truly love snow - but despite all the dreams of white Christmas'szzz, in reality that seldom happens in many parts of the world. But it's not a sad song - it's a happy one! Vancouver's annual odds are one in 10 - I looked it up - so I'm hoping!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Electronic - 'The Patience Of A Saint' I mentioned the band Electronic in yesterday's Stop Modernists post - and how two of the three songs that Neil Tennant sang on were singles. Well this is the third - which SHOULD have been released as a single - a witty duet between New Order's Bernard Sumner and the Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant - not to mention featuring the Smith's Johnny Marr - I mean, how cool is that?!

I always wished that remixes had been made of this song - but they never were. There's still time though - Electronic's self titled debut album was released in 1991 - they could easily release a 20th anniversary edition with all new remixes - I'm talking to you EMI!

Despite it's apparent destiny to remain a relatively unknown album track, part of what makes this song so great are the sardonic lyrics. Some of my favorite lines are 'And if I drove a faster car, I'd drive it bloody well' and 'Why should I care? I'd rather watch drying paint'. This is 'The Patience Of A Saint'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Stop Modernists featuring Chris Lowe!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Stop Modernists featuring Chris Lowe - 'Subculture' (Main Vocal Extended/ Dub) Yesterday's Canada Day post featured a new remix from the Pet Shop Boys - today's new music features vocals from one of them - but not singer Neil Tennant's! Stop Modernists is the name of a collaboration between Finnish dj/ producers and longtime friends Jori Hulkkonen and Alex Neiminen.

'Subculture' is a cover of New Order's classic single from their excellent album 'Low-Life' which was released in 1985. It features vocals from Chris Lowe - the quieter half of the Pet Shop Boys duo - the one who seldom speaks - and who even more rarely sings! The song is released on the Helsinki based Keys Of Life label and features two versions - the 'Main Vocal Extended' and 'Dub' versions. The 'Dub' version still features Lowe on vocals but via a vocoder, adding to it's electro feel. 

Of course the Pet Shop Boys are no strangers to New Order having previously been part of the 'alternative dance supergroup' Electronic - that featured New Order's Bernard Sumner and the Smith's guitarist Johnny Marr. They collaborated on three tracks that all featured Neil Tennant on vocals - two of which were singles - 'Getting Away With It' and 'Disappointed'.

This cover is very faithful to the original - which may lead one to question why one would do it - but when you've been a fan of New Order and the Pet Shop Boys as long as I have it makes no difference! It's a quality cover - with Chris Lowe's delivery being similar to Bernard Sumner's trademark understated vocals. I like both versions of the track, so here they are - starting with the 'Main Vocal Extended' version... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Canada Day! New Remix! Hidden Cameras + Pet Shop Boys!

SummersRadio™ Canada Day! New Remix! Hidden Cameras - 'Colour Of A Man' (Pet Shop Boys Organic Mix) Well I posted a new Air remix a few hours ago, but as it's Canada Day today it seems appropriate to also post a Canadian artist - and I found a brand new remix as well!

Hidden Cameras are from Toronto and they've been making music for the past ten years - in fact they are celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a show at Barbican in London tomorrow! The show will also feature a performance from Chilly Gonzales - along with a showing of his feature film 'Ivory Tower' which includes cameos from fellow Canadian's Feist, Peaches and Tiga. The show is part of 'Canadian Blast' - a weekend of Canada Day celebrations in London - that also featured Blue Rodeo performing in Trafalger Square earlier today.

And as a bonus Hidden Cameras have just released this new remix online by one of London's finest! 'Colour Of A Man' is a track from their last album - their fifth - called 'Origin: Orphan', which was released on the Arts & Crafts label in 2009. This is the new 'Pet Shop Boys Organic Remix'... Enjoy!
