New Order have posted a new video online - and it's not just a preview! 'Restless' is the name of the first official single and video from their forthcoming new album 'Music Complete' (their tenth) which will be released September 25th on Mute.

SummersRadio™ Music News + Rare Remix! New Order - 'Music Complete' Trailer 1/ 'Mr. Disco' (Extended)

New Order have just announced the details of their forthcoming new album 'Music Complete' online today! 'Music Complete' features eleven new tracks and it will be released on September 25th on Mute Records. This will be the band's first album without bassist Peter Hook, who left the band in 2007 - but it also features the return of keyboardist Gillian Gilbert.

The album is produced by New Order and it also features two guest producers - The Chemical Brothers' Tom Rowlands on two tracks ('Singularity' and 'Unlearn The Hate') and Stuart Price on the track 'Superheated'.

New Order have just announced that they've signed to the Mute label and they plan to release a new album! I reckon that's good news so let's celebrate with a Stonerhouse™ classic from 1993.

'Ruined In A Day' was released as the second single from their album 'Republic' and this remix was included on their 'The Rest Of New Order' remix compilation from 1995 which is available on iTunes.

Montreal's Drug Train have released a New Order cover online as a free download! It's a great cover of New Order's 1987 single 'Touched By The Hand Of God' - originally from the Salvation soundtrack. It features additional fuzzy guitars so it sounds rather like The Jesus & Mary Chain covering New Order - so it's quite awesome.

SummersRadio™ New Music! New Order!

SummersRadio™ New Music! New Order - 'I've Got A Feeling'

New Order have just released a new-ish album called 'Lost Sirens'! Now I say new-ish because the tracks were recorded during the 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call' sessions between 2003 and 2004 - but six out of the album's eight tracks have never been released until now.

The songs were originally intended for the follow up to 'Waiting For...' but the group broke up in 2007. They've since reformed for some live shows in 2011 and 12 - without Peter Hook - but with the return of Gillian Gilbert.
          

I find it difficult to consider this their proper ninth album - perhaps 'Leftover Sirens' would be a more apt title. Two tracks have been available previously - 'Hellbent" was released in 2011 as part of the compilation album 'Total: From Joy Division to New Order'. 'I Told You So' also appeared on 'Waiting For..' but 'Lost Sirens' features the 'Crazy World Mix' of the song.

Portland's Chromatics have just released a new song online - a cover of New Order's 'Ceremony'! 'Ceremony' was written by Joy Division but after Ian Curtis' suicide the song was released as the first single from the newly renamed band - as New Order - in 1981.

                   

The Chromatics Johnny Jewel released a new mix on Soundcloud this week called 'Black & White/ A Mix For Autumn' which features the band covering 'Ceremony' - along with special guest Ida No from Glass Candy on guitar.

'Song 2' was first released as the second single from Blur's fifth (self titled) album in 1997. The song has been remixed countless times since - this version was remixed last summer by Swiss dj/ producer Kevin Miller. One of the things I like about doing this blog is the excitement that comes with tracking the page views - and what parts of the world people are looking and listening from. I've always been a bit of a numbers freak - from making my own weekly Top 50 song charts when I was about 11 (because they were better than the existing ones of course!) to a general interest in city populations and other such things. You may have noticed that I often post at certain times as well - 1:11, 11:11, 3:33 - and of course 4:20 is a popular one here in Vansterdam - as some people occasionally call our beautiful city! :)

Anyway, sometime tonight or in the wee hours of the morning the blog will hit a bit of a milestone in the all-time views so far department. I won't give away numbers at this time - not until I hit the millions - but it's a healthy start for 16 official months on the world wide web. And how shall we celebrate this achievement? SummersRadio™ Classic! Electronic - 'The Patience Of A Saint' I mentioned the band Electronic in yesterday's Stop Modernists post - and how two of the three songs that Neil Tennant sang on were singles. Well this is the third - which SHOULD have been released as a single - a witty duet between New Order's Bernard Sumner and the Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant - not to mention featuring the Smith's Johnny Marr - I mean, how cool is that?!

I always wished that remixes had been made of this song - but they never were. There's still time though - Electronic's self titled debut album was released in 1991 - they could easily release a 20th anniversary edition with all new remixes - I'm talking to you EMI!

Despite it's apparent destiny to remain a relatively unknown album track, part of what makes this song so great are the sardonic lyrics. Some of my favorite lines are 'And if I drove a faster car, I'd drive it bloody well' and 'Why should I care? I'd rather watch drying paint'. This is 'The Patience Of A Saint'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Stop Modernists featuring Chris Lowe!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Stop Modernists featuring Chris Lowe - 'Subculture' (Main Vocal Extended/ Dub) Yesterday's Canada Day post featured a new remix from the Pet Shop Boys - today's new music features vocals from one of them - but not singer Neil Tennant's! Stop Modernists is the name of a collaboration between Finnish dj/ producers and longtime friends Jori Hulkkonen and Alex Neiminen.

'Subculture' is a cover of New Order's classic single from their excellent album 'Low-Life' which was released in 1985. It features vocals from Chris Lowe - the quieter half of the Pet Shop Boys duo - the one who seldom speaks - and who even more rarely sings! The song is released on the Helsinki based Keys Of Life label and features two versions - the 'Main Vocal Extended' and 'Dub' versions. The 'Dub' version still features Lowe on vocals but via a vocoder, adding to it's electro feel. 

Of course the Pet Shop Boys are no strangers to New Order having previously been part of the 'alternative dance supergroup' Electronic - that featured New Order's Bernard Sumner and the Smith's guitarist Johnny Marr. They collaborated on three tracks that all featured Neil Tennant on vocals - two of which were singles - 'Getting Away With It' and 'Disappointed'.

This cover is very faithful to the original - which may lead one to question why one would do it - but when you've been a fan of New Order and the Pet Shop Boys as long as I have it makes no difference! It's a quality cover - with Chris Lowe's delivery being similar to Bernard Sumner's trademark understated vocals. I like both versions of the track, so here they are - starting with the 'Main Vocal Extended' version... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Order! Who Did They Sample? New Order - 'Blue Monday' After posting the rare 'Blue Monday' remix below I figured it would be the perfect time to tell you about the awesome website called 'WhoSampled'! Their official address is whosampled.com http://www.whosampled.com/ and their tag line is 'Exploring and discussing the DNA of music'. Here's some info from their site on what it's all about if you're not already familiar with them:

'We're building the ultimate database of sampled music, remixes and cover songs. Dig deeper into music by discovering direct links among over 95,000 songs and 37,000 artists, from Hip-Hop and R&B via Electronic Music through to Rock, Pop, Funk, Soul, Jazz and beyond. Watch the videos, contribute new content, discuss and vote.'

Basically you can type in the name of any artist or song and it will list every artist that they've sampled and every artist who's sampled them. Of course not everything is in there yet, but it's constantly growing. Not only do they post the audio for the original song and the source of the sample - they also indicate at exactly what point in each song the sample occurs!

The interesting thing about New Order's 'Blue Monday' is that people generally believe it to be entirely a New Order composition - while they did write it - it features several obvious influences and samples from other songs. So here's few of the tracks that provided some of the elements that helped mold what became the club anthem we know as 'Blue Monday'...

The keyboard bit on the intro and extro was sampled from the Kraftwerk song 'Uranium' from their album 'Radio-Activity' which was released in 1975... Enjoy!



The kick drum beat was borrowed from Donna Summer's track 'Our Love' from her 'Bad Girls' album which was written and produced by Summer and Giorgio Moroder and from her 1979 album 'Bad Girls'. The kick drum sample appears 1:33 in - and even before that the keyboards sound a lot like another New Order track - 'Temptation' that was released as a single just prior to 'Blue Monday' - Enjoy!



The bassline was styled from Sylvester's 1978 disco classic 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)'...



And the overall arrangement of the song came from a song called 'Dirty Talk' by the Italian post-disco group Klein + M.B.O...



So although 'Blue Monday' was a groundbreaking record it was also influenced by and a fusion of many different sounds that came before it - mixing disco, new wave, synthpop and New York club music - to create a new club anthem. Just for kicks here's the excellent remix from Hardloor to remind us of how great all these influences sound stitched together... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Rare Remix! New Order - 'Blue Monday' (Andrea Remix) Few club songs are as legendary and influential as New Order's 'Blue Monday'. It was first released as a 12 inch single in March of 1983 on the Factory Records label. It's been re-released several times - most notably in 1988 and 1995 - and remixed countless times! I was much more impressed with the '95 remixes over the '88 ones - especially with the Hardfloor remix. What was really surprising was when I first listened to this 'Andrea Remix' - New Order... doing reggae?!? It's a bit of a reggae/ ambient hybrid actually, and it works amazingly well. This was originally the fourth track on the 'Blue Monday '95' cd single - this is the 'Andrea Remix'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! New Order!

SummersRadio™ New Music! New Order - 'Hellbent' Ian Curtis - the vocalist for Joy Division - died 31 years ago today. As it was a suicide (hanging) it's certainly not something that one generally celebrates - however today Rhino Records in the U.K. has announced that they're releasing a new Joy Division/ New Order compilation! It's called 'Total: From Joy Division To New Order' and it's the first compilation to feature some of the best of both bands together!

The cover features artwork by Peter Saville - Factory Records legendary former art director...

                    

It's released on June 6th and it will feature 18 tracks - just 5 from Joy Division and 13 from New Order. The best part is that the final track is a previously unrleased New Order song called 'Hellbent'! Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - 'Get Better'  While 'Sick Tonight' has obvious drum and bass influences they go for a more New Order synth style sound on this track 'Get Better' - which was the first single released from 'The Logic Of Chance'. Once again I think that their lyrics are brilliant - a couple of my favorite of many great lines/ observations in this one are 'Little kids being raised by slightly bigger kids' and 'I see small town syndrome growing in size'. This video was directed by longtime British music video director Richard Heslop who's very first video was The Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead'! He's also worked with The Cure, Sinead O'Conner, Queen, Happy Mondays, Curve, The Shamen, Suede and even New Order... Enjoy!

Now here they are recording with Joy Division/ New Order's Bernard Sumner - however this time around they're hawking sneakers! This is the new video for this unique collaboration between Mr. Sumner, Hot Chip, and London's dj/ remix duo Hot City. SummersRadio™ New Remix! The Morning Benders - 'Excuses' (The Golden Filter Remix) The Morning Benders are an indie rock band from Berkley that are now based in New York. They released their second album entitled 'Big Echo' in March. This song has gained exposure through use in two tv commercials - for Sony '3d' tv's and Reese's peanut butter cups!

The Golden Filter are also from New York and they cite Saint Etienne and Pink Floyd as influences on their sound - clearly I need to hear more of their stuff! I really like this remix - they take the shuffling do-wop of the original and gradually transform it into a gloriously spacey number that weaves in and out of New Order territory... Enjoy!
