SummersRadio™ New EP + Free Downloads! Stars - 'Asleep'

Stars have just released a new EP called 'Far From Home' online today! The EP is released just a few weeks before the Montreal band head out on their Asian tour. 'Far From Home' features five tracks  - four stripped down 'Breakglass Version'(s) of songs from their most recent album 'The North' - plus one great cover tune.
                

The 'Breakglass Version' of the title track was previously available as an itunes bonus track - but the others including 'Backlines', 'Lights Changing Colour' and 'Progress' have not been released until now. The fifth track on the EP is a cover of The Smiths classic song 'Asleep' which was previously only available on a children's charity music compilation called 'Sing Me To Sleep - Indie Lullabies'.

Luis Leon is a producer from Peru who's just released a new remix of 'This Charming Man' online! 'This Charming Man' was The Smiths' second single (following 'Hand In Glove') first released in 1983, and then again in 1992 in support of their 'Best... 1' compilation.

                     

The 'Luis Leon Bootleg' is part of the 'Iconic Bands Bootleg Series' from the Blankhaus Music label. SummersRadio™ Concert News + Rare Remix! Morrissey - 'First Of The Gang To Die'/ 'Disappointed' (Manchester Mix)

Morrissey has just announced a fall North American tour and tickets go on sale this weekend! The 33 date tour begins October 5th in Boston and wraps up December 8th in Atlantic City. As you may know Morrissey announced in 2006 that he would not be playing any dates in Canada until the annual seal hunt - where up to 350,000 seals are killed each year - is stopped. Sadly this practice continues and it's a disgrace whether you're a vegetarian and animal activist like Morrissey or not. BUT...

                      

The good news is that while Moz is protesting animal cruelty he certainly has not forgotten his Canadian fans - as he's scheduled a few dates in smaller border cities that perhaps wouldn't normally play host to a legendary artist of his stature including Niagara Falls, New York for southern Ontario fans - and Bellingham, Washington for Vancouver fans! He'll be performing at the Mount Baker Theatre on November 10th - tickets go on sale this Saturday (with a pre-sale starting on Thursday if you're a supporting member of the venue) here: http://mountbakertheatre.com/events/2012/morrissey

He doesn't currently have a new album scheduled for release but the venue's website says that he'll be 'performing the greatest hits from his legendary catalog as well as new unreleased songs'! New songs!! To celebrate this announcement I've decided to post a couple of my favorite Morrissey solo tracks - first up we have 'First Of The Gang To Die' from his 2004 comeback album 'You Are The Quarry'... This is a rare extended remix of one of his greatest b-side songs - 'Disappointed' - which was the flip side to his 'Everyday Is Like Sunday' single from his 1988 debut solo album 'Viva Hate'. This is the 'Manchester Mix'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Warm Speakers - 'Youth' Patrick Berlinquette is a singer/ songwriter from Long Island New York that is currently recording under the name Warm Speakers. He released his five song debut EP called 'Mezcal Noon' in July - and he's just released his newest single 'Youth' online as a free download!

While the 'Mezcal Noon' EP is perhaps best described as chillwave - which is often characterized by having rather lightweight vocals - Patrick actually has a strong singing voice. His new single 'Youth' is definitely more experiemental/ electronic - and expertly produced. Glowbug - 'Where Is My Mind'/ 'Shoplifters Of The World Unite' Bellingham's Glowbug have just released a new EP called 'Covered In Lights Vol. 1' online today! Glowbug is the name given to the electronic project of musician/ producer Daniel Anderson - who's also a member of the indie folk outfit The Ghost And The Grace, and a founding member of the band Idiot Pilot.

He's just released Glowbug's latest 4 track EP of covers called 'Covered In Lights Vol. 1' - which features covers of songs from indie rock heavyweights The Pixies, The Smiths, Radiohead and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's! 'How Soon Is Now' was first released as the b-side of 'William, It Was Really Nothing' in 1984. After becoming a club and alternative radio hit in the U.S. it was added to the North American version of their 'Meat Is Murder' album, and it was later released as a proper single in the U.K. in 1985 - reaching #24. Although it wasn't one of their most successful singles chart wise, it's perhaps their most instantly reconizable song - particularly for Johnny Marr's opening guitar sound. SummersRadio™ Music News! The Smiths! Part 1!

SummersRadio™ Music News! The Smiths - 'Paint A Vulgar Picture' Rhino Records in the U.K. has just announced that they're releasing three new limited edition Smiths boxed sets in October! The compilation is appropriately titled 'The Smiths Complete' and is released in the U.K. on October 3rd. It comes in three formats - a vinyl boxed set, a cd set, and a 'Deluxe Collector's Boxset' which combines both the vinyl and cd editions plus some more goodies.

Before I delve into further details I'm instantly reminded of one of my favorite Smiths songs - 'Paint A Vulgar Picture' from their 'Strangeways, Here We Come' album - which was their fourth and final studio album released in 1987. If you're not familiar the song it's a brilliant, brutally honest look at the music industry and how it keeps 'dead stars' alive. While all the members of The Smiths are alive and well - as is their music and it's influence - the fact is that the band hasn't recorded or performed together for 24 years! But then it is the music itself - and their fans - with some help from the record companies - that keeps them alive.

Allow me to quote a few lyrics from 'Paint A Vulgar Picture'...

"Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)"...

"Best of ! Most of !
Satiate the need

SummersRadio™ Classic! Electronic!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Electronic - 'The Patience Of A Saint' I mentioned the band Electronic in yesterday's Stop Modernists post - and how two of the three songs that Neil Tennant sang on were singles. Well this is the third - which SHOULD have been released as a single - a witty duet between New Order's Bernard Sumner and the Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant - not to mention featuring the Smith's Johnny Marr - I mean, how cool is that?!

I always wished that remixes had been made of this song - but they never were. There's still time though - Electronic's self titled debut album was released in 1991 - they could easily release a 20th anniversary edition with all new remixes - I'm talking to you EMI!

Despite it's apparent destiny to remain a relatively unknown album track, part of what makes this song so great are the sardonic lyrics. Some of my favorite lines are 'And if I drove a faster car, I'd drive it bloody well' and 'Why should I care? I'd rather watch drying paint'. This is 'The Patience Of A Saint'... Enjoy!
