SummersRadio™ New Remix! Metric - 'Gold Guns Girls' (RIOT 87 Remix) Toronto's Metric announced their 'Fantasies' remix contest in conjunction with Indaba Music at the end of September and we're now a mere two weeks away from the winners being announced! There's an individual contest for each track on the album and each winner receives $1,000 cash - and most likely an official release as Metric is considering releasing a full remix album as well! As one of Metric's biggest fans it's hard to believe that it's been two whole months since I've posted any remixes - so it's certainly time for a new one!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Hercules and Love Affair - 'My House' Hercules and Love Affair just released the video for their new single 'My House' online today! It's the first single from their second album called 'Blue Songs' which is due for release on the Moshi Moshi label on January 31st. It contains 11 tracks including another called 'Step Up' which features vocals from Bloc Party's Kele Okereke. The album features two new vocalists - one of which is Shaun Wright - who sings on this first single 'My House'. Apparently he was a fan of the band that got to meet Andy Butler - told him he could sing and that they should work together - and now he's a member of the band! If only life was always that easy... Boney M - 'No More Chain Gang' On Dec. 30th Bobby Farrell - best known as the frontman and vocalist for Boney M - passed away in St. Petersberg Russia. Strangely this was the day after the anniversary of Rasputin's death - the Russian mystic who's story is told in their monster hit 'Rasputin' from 1978 - and in the same city!
Bobby Farrell was born and raised in Aruba - once he finished school he worked as a sailor for 2 years before settling in Norway. From there he went on to the Netherlands where he started djing - which led him to Germany where he met producer Frank Farian. Although Farrell is recognized as the male face of the band it was later revealed that he in fact only sang vocals during live performances, as all the vocals in the studio were performed by producer Frank Farian. Regardless it is Farrell and the three female members of the band that everyone recognizes from their performances, videos and album covers. Rather than post one of their obvious hits I thought that this was a fine opportunity to post one of their underrated songs. 'No More Chain Gang' is an album track from 1979's 'Oceans Of Fantasy' album - the one that came out after 'Nightflight To Venus' that featured the megahits 'Rasputin' and 'Rivers Of Babylon'. What stands out to me on this track is the drumming and the production - such a perfect sound - I'm actually surprised that it hasn't been sampled at some point. There are other posts on youtube with better visuals - but this one is the full version - and it has the best sound - so you can FEEL the drums... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Massive Attack vs Portishead - 'Teardrop On Roads' This mashup by Austin's Jaya Prime stitches together Massive Attack's 'Teardrop' (featuring vocals by Elizabeth Fraser - former vocalist for the Cocteau Twins) and Portishead's 'Roads'! 'Teardrops' is a single from Massive Attack's 1998 release called 'Mezzanine' and 'Roads' is a standout track from Portishead's 1994 debut 'Dummy' - both bands are from Bristol. This seems like more of a medley than a mashup, but that's perhaps because it fits together so seamlessly. SummersRadio™ New Music! Gorillaz - 'California & The Slipping Of The Sun' This is the second last track on the Gorillaz new 15 song album called 'The Fall' and was recorded in Oakland. Apparently there are plans for a physical release although no date has been set thus far. I'm not sure if this would be a wise decision as a lot of it sounds unfinished - more like a collection of demos than a proper album. I like this song as it starts out quite ambient and gets more dancey towards the end - but even still it seems to end too quickly. SummersRadio™ New Music! Gorillaz - 'Aspen Forest' Gorillaz released their new album called 'The Fall' on Christmas day! It was recorded on the North American leg of their 'Escape To Plastic Beach World Tour' which started Oct. 3rd in Montreal and wrapped up here in Vancouver on Nov. 3rd. It has been released 'free' to fans - meaning that you can download it legally for free if you're a member of their official fan club - but you must pay to be a member! It was recorded using an iPad - along with a number of additional instruments. This instrumental number called 'Aspen Forest' was partially written in Santa Fe and then finished here in Vancouver...
