SummersRadio™ New Music! Spiritualized!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Spiritualized - 'Hey Jane'

London's Spiritualized have just released their new single called 'Hey Jane' online! 'Hey Jane' is the first single from the band's forthcoming seventh studio album called 'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' which is set for release on April 16th on the Double Six Records label.

The album will feature ten new tracks - this is the quite cool and rather amusing cover art:

'Hey Jane' has just been released on itunes in the U.K. on Monday (no word yet on a release date here in Canada) and it will be released physically on limited edition heavyweight 7" vinyl on the same day as the album (April 16th). You can pre-order the song on vinyl (which is divided into part one and two on the a and b sides) here: http://www.dominorecordco.com/uk/singles/14-02-12/hey-jane-/

'Hey Jane' starts off like your typical uptempo Spiritualized track - but there are a few things that stand out and make it sound different to me. One is that the female backing vocals are suprisingly upbeat - and Jason Pierce's vocals sound a bit different too - almost like Lou Reed during his Velvet Underground era. While there's no doubt that The Velvet Underground has influenced Spiritualized (and Spacemen 3's) previous work - even the song and album titles are reminiscent of the band - 'Hey Jane' and 'Sweet Jane' - 'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' and 'White Light/ White Heat' come to mind.

At nearly nine minutes long it's a rather epic tune with a number of tempo changes. There's a miniature 'Cop Shoot Cop' instrumental freakout about 3 minutes in, and it soon sounds like the song is ending - but it fades back in with the catchiness of a Wings tune. Then the last few minutes features a chorus that encapsulates the album title 'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' with layered backing vocals.

So there's no doubt that this is a Spiritualized tune - but with a few sprinkles reminiscent of other bands like the aforementioned Velvet Underground, Wings, and even Sonic Youth for a bit. It's the band's own sound - but with enough different bits to keep it fresh. While I (along with many others) consider 'Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' to be an absolute masterpiece, I've found the last two albums to be waning a bit - too much sameness - and just too much God talk for my taste. Thus this tune makes me hopeful that the new album - while not likely to be a complete departure - might have enough variances to make it stand out from the others.

This is Spiritualized's brand new single 'Hey Jane'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classics + Rare Remix! The Primitives!

SummersRadio™ Classics + Rare Remix! The Primitives - 'Spacehead'/ 'Way Behind Me'/ 'You Are The Way' (Re-Ravishing Mix)/ 'Rattle My Cage'

After posting the new Belle & Sebastian cover of The Primitives 'Crash' (and subsequently the original version as well) yesterday I've been craving more of The Primitives ever since - so I thought I'd post some more of their finest tracks!

The band formed in Coventry England in 1985 and released three album's before breaking up in 1992. They were one of the great indie pop/ rock bands of the late 80's/ early 90's - and one of my favorite female fronted bands from that period - along with The Darling Buds and Voice Of The Beehive. After 17 years apart they reformed in 2009 for a series of live gigs and they released a new EP in 2011.

I'll feature one track from each of their three studio albums and one from their most recent EP. Although not released as a single this is a standout track from their debut album 'Lovely' which was released in 1988 - as it features some fine fuzzy guitars and the always lovely vocals of Tracy Cattell aka Tracy Tracy - this is 'Spacehead'... Enjoy!

'Way Behind Me' was the first single released from their second album 'Pure'... Enjoy!

'You Are The Way' was the first single released from their third album - 1991's 'Galore' - and was the only single to chart in the U.K. and sadly the band decided to call it quits in '92. This is a rare remix that was recorded in 1991 but never released due to a sample clearance issue - and it's only just surfaced on the world wide web for the first time this month!

This is the 'Re-Ravishing Mix' of 'You Are The Way'... Enjoy!

As mentioned The Primitives reformed in 2009 and released their first new recording in two decades last year with their 'Never Kill A Secret' EP. You can keep up with the band's latest news on their official Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Primitives-Official/114265251970129 and on their website here: http://the-primitives.co.uk/

This is the lead track from the 'Never Kill A Secret' EP called 'Rattle My Cage' - with the band sounding (and looking) as good as ever... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Belle & Sebastian!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Belle & Sebastian - 'Crash'/ The Primitives - 'Crash'

Glasgow's Belle & Sebastian have recorded a new song - a cover of The Primitives indie rock classic 'Crash'! 'Crash' is Belle & Sebestian's exclusive new contribution to the latest installment of the 'Late Night Tales' compilation series - that aims to create the ultimate 'late night' selections. The band are curating the 27th volume - they also compiled the 14th volume which came out in early 2006 - and they're only the second artist (along with Groove Armada) to have been asked to make a second volume so far.

Belle & Sebastian's 'Late Night Tales Vol. 2' is set for release on March 26th and will feature a total of 25 tracks from a typically diverse range of artists such as Gold Panda, Broadcast, The Lovin' Spoonful, Toro Y Moi, and Pete Shelley. It's available for pre-order now from the official Late Night Tales website here: http://latenighttales.co.uk/product.php/166/belle-and-sebastian-vol-2-late-night-tales/8f18b88374cf6dc8f781795e96916ff0

This is Belle and Sebastian's new cover of 'Crash' - it's such a good song that it holds it's own and translates well in this chilled loungy take on it... Enjoy!

Classic Bonus Track! The Primitives - 'Crash'

'Crash' was the first single from The Primitives debut album called 'Lovely' which was released in 1988. For those of you who aren't familiar with the original song - or if you are and you just want to bask in the glow of it's driving guitar goodness - here's the original version... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download + Bonus Tracks! Gorillaz!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download + Bonus Tracks! Gorillaz featuring James Murphy & Andre 3000 - 'Do Ya Thing' (includes free download!)/ Blursabian (Blur vs Kasabian) - 'There's No LSF' (Party Ben Mashup)/ Gorillaz featuring James Murphy & Andre 3000 - 'Do Ya Thing' (Full 13 Minute Explicit Version)

Gorillaz have just released a new single online featuring James Murphy and Andre 3000! The song is part of the Converse '3 Artists, 1 Song' series - and ties in with the release of the limited edition 'Chuck Taylor Gorillaz Collection' which features artwork designed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett:

Truth be told I've had a wicked hangover all day today, so I may be a bit harder to please than usual - but even after multiple listens I'm not sure that this song is to my liking. Although this single is a one off, I'd be much more excited to see/ hear a new song from Blur than Gorillaz.

The idea is certainly not unpossible as Damon Albarn will be reuniting with his Blur mates to headline a concert in London's Hyde Park on August 12 to coincide with the closing ceremonies of the summer Olympics. The concert is billed as the 'Best Of British' and will also feature The Specials and New Order - I want to go! It seems like the perfect time to debut something new, doesn't it?

While I keep that dream alive for now, today we have this new Gorillaz track - 'Do Ya Thing' - featuring former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy and Outkast's Andre 3000. My first impression was that it sounded rather similar to 'Feel Good Inc.' initially - but with far too many words/ too much knattering - and a much weaker musical backing track. I love James Murphy but I've never been a big fan of falsetto vocals - and Andre 3000's squawking about a new Outkast album is just plain annoying. But that's just my opinon - what do you think?

If this version of 'Do Ya Thing' is to your liking you can download a copy for free from the official Converse website here: http://play.converse.com/blog/2012/02/23/doyathing/ Enjoy!

Bonus Track! Blursabian - 'There's No LSF' (Party Ben Mashup)

I don't normally post a track that isn't to my liking, so I feel a bit soiled with the above post - so I must counter attack it by also featuring an awesome mashup! This is a classic mashup by San Francisco based dj/ producer/ radio host Party Ben - of Blur's 'There's No Other Way' and Kasabian's 'LSF'... Enjoy!

Bonus Bonus Track! Gorillaz featuring James Murphy & Andre 3000 - 'Do Ya Thing' (Full 13 Minute Explicit Version) The four minute version of 'Do Ya Thing' is actually an edit of the song - the full version is set to be available on http://gorillaz.com/ on March 3rd, but it's already been leaked online. There's also an official video being released on Wednesday (the 29th) - and Gorillaz video's are usually pretty elaborate so I may add it on to this post later if it's good.

I like how this version gets rockier about four and half minutes in (and a bit spaced out near the end) but again I think Andre 3000 ruins it by shouting how he's 'the shit' endlessly - drop the 'the' and I'm tempted to agree with him. Instead of the usual 'Enjoy' I say listen if you dare... :)

SummersRadio™ New Music! Flow Machines!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Flow Machines - 'Synchronise'/ 'Hi-Res'

Flow Machines have just released their new album called 'Hi-Res' today! Flow Machines are an indie electronic pop band from Manchester - we previously featured their charming cover of Saint Etienne's 'I Was Born On Christmas Day' and their most recent single 'Any Other Day' on Christmas day which you can check out/ revisit here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/12/summersradio-new-music-free-download_25.html

'Hi-Res' is the band's second full length album - it features ten new tracks (including the single 'Any Other Day') and is the follow up to their debut called 'Every Last Drop'. If you're a fan of synth pop artists like Dntel, The Postal Service, Saint Etienne, and The Human League, I highly suspect that Flow Machines will be to your liking.

'Hi-Res' is available for download on their official website here: http://www.flowmachines.com/ on a 'pay what you want' basis and those who pay go on a special mailing list for bonus tracks and remixes later in the year! You can also keep up with the band on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/flowmachines?sk=wall

This is one of the standout tracks on 'Hi-Res' upon my first listen - this is track eight called 'Synchronise'. I especially like how the hypnotic vocal sample drifts from one speaker to the next.. Enjoy!

This is the title - and closing track - on 'Hi-Res' - just released today! I quite like the lyrics and overall mood/ feel of this one... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Rare Remix! Alex Bau! Frankie Goes To Hollywood!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Rare Remix! Alex Bau - 'Hollywoodbullet'/ Frankie Goes To Hollywood - 'Relax' (Mega Longer Ultratraxx Version 1983)

Alex Bau is a dj/ producer from Germany who's just released his latest EP called 'Recycled Tracks Pt. 1' on his own Credo label! The EP features two tracks - 'Hollywoodbullet' and 'Heartattack'. 'Hollywoodbullet' features samples from Frankie Goes To Hollywood's classic hit 'Relax' - which was first released in 1983, but shot to number one in 1984 when it was banned by the BBC.

'Hollywoodbullet' is currently available exclusively on Beatport: http://www.beatport.com/#release/recycled-tracks-pt-1/872194 You can also learn more about Alex Bau on his Facebook fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/alex-bau/128175640006?ref=ts

Whether you view this as a new track that samples FGTH - or as a remix of 'Relax' itself - either way it's a wicked dark techno tune... Enjoy!

Rare Remix! Frankie Goes To Hollywood - 'Relax' (Mega Longer Ultratraxx Version 1983)

There have been countless remixes made of FGTH's 'Relax' over the years - but up until today I thought that the longest version was the 16 minute 'Sex Mix'. However, if you can't get enough of Frankie here's a rare 26 minute and 40 second remix from 1983 that I came across today... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! + Classic Bonus Track! David Amo & Julio Navas! Mighty Dub Katz!

SummersRadio™ New Music! + Classic Bonus Track! David Amo & Julio Navas - 'Squirt' (Original Mix)/ The Mighty Dub Katz - 'Magic Carpet Ride' (Son Of Wilmot Mix)

David Amo and Julio Navas are a dj/ production duo from Barcelona Spain who've just released their newest single this week! '3 Days And 3 Nights' is a three track EP featuring the title track, a song called 'Squirt' and a remix of 'Squirt' by Ron Costa. It's released on the Great Stuff Recordings label and is currently available exclusively on Beatport here: http://www.beatport.com/#release/3-days-and-3-nights/869086 You can keep up with Amo & Navas on their Facebook fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/amonavasfansite?sk=info

The title track is a quality tech house number with a nice gallop and a wicked baseline, but it has just a titch too much God talk for my taste - it's the second track 'Squirt' that instantly reeled me in. 'Squirt' begins with a nice hypnotic groove and then about two minutes in a massive bassline punts the song up to the next level. Before you know it 'Squirt' is um, erupting :) into a wonderful world of disco hi-hats, funky breakdowns, and trippy techno synths.

This is the 'Original Mix' of 'Squirt'... Enjoy!

Classic Bonus Track! The Mighty Dub Katz - 'Magic Carpet Ride' (Son Of Wilmot Mix)

The Mighty Dub Katz were a duo consisting of Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim and Gareth Hansome aka GMoney. The excellent synth bassline in David Amo & Julio Navas' track 'Squirt' reminds me of the similarly hypnotic bassline of the Mighty Dub Katz 1995 club classic 'Magic Carpet Ride' - which also features a couple excellent fiesta style breakdowns! This is the 'Son Of Wilmot Mix' of 'Magic Carpet Ride'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! VCMG!

SummersRadio™ New Music! VCMG - 'Single Blip' (Original Mix)/ (Mathew Jonson Remix)

VCMG aka Vince Clarke and Martin Gore have just released their second EP this week! We featured VCMG's first single 'Spock' back at the start of December which you can check out/ revisit here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/12/summersradio-new-music-vcmg-vince.html

'Single Blip' is their second EP featuring the title track plus four remixes - one each from Mathew Jonson, Terence Fixmer, Byetone, and Wolfgang Voigt - and it's currently available exclusively on Beatport here: http://www.beatport.com/#release/ep2-single-blip/870381

Unlike the first single/ EP 'Spock', 'Single Blip' does not feature the vocals of Martin Gore - it's an instrumental track - so it sounds a bit more techno than say perhaps a new Depeche Mode single. Both tracks are set to be featured on their collaborative forthcoming ten track debut album called 'SSSS' - which is expected to be largely instrumental - and is set for release on March 12th on Mute.

First up we have the 'Original Mix' of 'Single Blip'... Enjoy!

And this is the rather leisurely remix by Berlin's Mathew Jonson... Enjoy!

I wonder if we'll have to wait another 30 years before these two sneaky snakes collaborate again :) Here's the cover art and full tracklisting for 'SSSS':

SummersRadio™ New Music! Nicky Romero!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Nicky Romero - 'Generation 303' (Original Mix)

Nicky Romero is a dj/ producer from Amsterdam who's released a massive new acid techno single called 'Generation 303'! 'Generation 303' is a one track single released on the Musical Freedom label - with the title referring to the Roland TB-303 synthesizer that was manufactured in the early 80's and responsible for the infamous 'acid' sound.

The song also features a sample of Schooly D's 1989 track called 'Gucci Again' which is perhaps most recognized in electronic circles as the sample used for the Chemical Brothers 1997 hit 'Block Rockin' Beats' - this is 'Generation 303'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Phunk Investigation!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Phunk Investigation - 'Back To The New Wave' (Original Mix)

Italian duo Phunk Investigation have just released their latest EP online today! The 'Back To The New Wave' EP features three tracks - the original mix of the title track, a remix from Stefano Noferini, and a song called 'Bamboo'. The EP is released on the Baptism label and is currently available exclusively on Beatport here: http://www.beatport.com/release/back-to-the-new-wave-ep/856557

'Back To The New Wave' is a very trippy layered tune with the vocal samples almost hovering over the song like a talking ghost! Please note that this is an edit as the full length version is not available anywhere to share - the full version is 8:09 so if this song is to your liking and you decide to purchase it, you get more than an extra three and a half minutes of spooktronica... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Video! St. Vincent!

SummersRadio™ New Video! St. Vincent - 'Cheerleader'

Annie Erin Clark aka St. Vincent has released the official video for her latest single 'Cheerleader'! Clark began her music career as a member of the Texas symphonic rock band The Polyphonic Spree in 2003, and later joined Sufjan Stevens' touring band in 2006 and released her debut EP called 'Paris Is Burning'. She released her debut full length album in 2007 called 'Marry Me', and 'Actor' followed in 2009.

'Cheerleader' is the third single released from her third album called 'Strange Mercy' which came out last September on the 4AD Records label. The video directed by Hiro Murai features some cool special effects portraying St. Vincent as a rather fragile larger than life exhibit in an art gallery... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Remixes! Yoko Ono!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Remixes! Yoko Ono - 'Will I' (Creamer & K Mix)/ 'Walking On Thin Ice' (FKEK Vocal Mix)/ 'Everyman... Everywoman...' (Passengerz Ono Mixshow)/ 'She Gets Down On Her Knees' (Morel Mix)

Yoko Ono turns 79 today - Happy Birthday Yoko! The average person's knowledge of Yoko Ono's music is probably her half of 1980's 'Double Fantasy' album with John Lennon - but Yoko is now into her fifth decade of recording a wide range of musical styles. Unless you're a big fan like myself you may be rather surprised to know that for the last decade she's had a very successful run of dance/ club singles released - featuring remixes of earlier recordings by some of the world's top dj's and producers.

Now it may seem odd at first to think that a woman in her 70's is making house and electronic club hits, but she's always been recording cutting edge music. In fact her first recording with John Lennon was in 1968 with an album called 'Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins' - an album of experimental electronic music. So to celebrate her 79th birthday I shall feature some of my favorites from this new remix era - including her newest club single 'She Gets Down On Her Knees' which has just been released this month.

As a fan of Yoko Ono one thing that bothers me is how very much hate is unnecessarily thrown her way - when she's dedicated so much of her life to promoting peace. (http://imaginepeace.com/) It's mostly from people who foolishly try and blame her for breaking up the Beatles - and by those who don't appreciate or get her music or her art. She has all too often been the butt of weak jokes - in fact I just saw a movie trailer on tv for the new Reese Witherspoon vehicle which features a Yoko Ono joke in it - in the trailer! If that's supposed to be one of the funniest bits of the movie I hardly think it's going to be a blockbuster. In my opinion a Yoko Ono joke is the sign of a lazy uninspired comedy writer - they're seldom funny - usually just cheap shots capitalizing on the fact that her name is so recognizable within pop culture.

Naturally Yoko is well aware of this, and as a response to far too many lame 'Oh, no!' jokes Yoko decided to drop her first name for these remix projects -  releasing them under the name 'ONO'. Since 2001 she has released 16 remix singles with every one charting on Billboard's Dance charts - with 11 of those reaching the top five - and nine of them have hit number one! This places her in the top 20 list of artists with the most number one dance hits in the United States - surpassing some other well known artists such as New Order, Kylie Minogue, and even Michael Jackson - and this sees her tied with Depeche Mode!

This first remix didn't hit number one, but it's one of my favorites by association. At the time of it's release I was dj'ing at a cool downtown Vancouver venue called DV8 Lounge - which sadly was recently leveled to expand a nearby park - which is still better than say, building a parking lot! I would also play visuals - trippy dvd compilations - and this song fit well with one that featured gorgeous scenery of the sky and bodies of water - and she references such things in the song.

'Will I' was originally a track from her 1995 album called 'Rising' and 'Will I/ 'Fly' was released as a remix single in 2003 - this is the 'Creamer & K Mix' by John Creamer and Stephane K... Enjoy!

'Walking On Thin Ice' is one of Yoko Ono's more successful solo singles - and it was also the song that she and John Lennon had just finished recording on the night he was fatally shot - on December 8th, 1980. It was subsequently released as a single at the end of January 1981 with the title listed on the cover as 'Walking On Thin Ice - For John'. This is one of ten remixes that were released as a single in 2003 - by artists such as the Pet Shop Boys, Danny Tenaglia and Felix Da Housecat. A lot of the remixes are really good but I particularly like the groove of this 'FKEK Vocal Mix' by Francois Kevorkian and Eric Kupper... Enjoy!

'Everyman Has A Woman Who Love Him' is a track from the 'Double Fantasy' album, which was released as a single in 2004 featuring 12 (!) remixes. It was retitled 'Everyman... Everywoman...' and the lyrics were changed to include gay and lesbian couples! This is the 'Passengerz Ono Mixshow' remix... Enjoy!

This is Ono's newest remix single - 'She Gets Down On Her Knees' - originally a track from her 1981 album 'Season Of Glass'. This is the 'Morel Mix'... Enjoy!
