SummersRadio™ New Music/ Video! Damon Albarn - 'Lonely Press Play' (Official Video)
Damon Albarn has just released a new video online today for his latest single 'Lonely Press Play'! 'Lonely Press Play' follows last month's title track (http://summersradio.blogspot.ca/2014/01/summersradio-new-music-new-video-damon.html) as the second single and video released from his forthcoming solo debut album 'Everyday Robots'. The full length is released on April 28th and the single itself is released on iTunes today.
Best known as the frontman for both Blur and Gorillaz it seems that Albarn has mellowed right out for his solo debut - that's going by the first two singles only though - I'm quite looking forward to hearing the album in full. In true solo fashion he also made this video shot around the world with his own iPad... Enjoy!

Damon Albarn is releasing his first proper solo album called 'Everyday Robots' on April 28th! The Blur/ Gorillaz frontman just posted his new song and video for the title track online today.
'Everyday Robots' finds Albarn in his chilled/ spaced out mode - declaring that we are the robots - lost and alone. It's a nice hypnotic shuffle with a colourful video (directed by Aitor Throup) in tow... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Gorillaz - 'Feel Good Inc.' (Bruno Be Remix)
Brazil's Bruno Be has just released a new remix of Gorillaz' 'Feel Good Inc.' online! 'Feel Good Inc.' was first released as the lead single from their second album 'Demon Days' in 2005. It was reported in June that Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett plan to make a follow up to their 2011 album 'The Fall' - but not until a new Blur album was finished first - yay!
This new 'Bruno Be Remix' is a deep house take on the song - with a few wobbly bits thrown in - and some unique vocal effects... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Raven Maize - 'The Real Life' (Fatboy Slim Remix)
First of all Happy 4/20! I will be attending the 17th annual 4/20 gathering at the VAG (Vancouver Art Gallery) this afternoon, so I thought I'd get in an early post before I get well sedated :)
The biggest story from the first weekend of the Coachella Music Festival has been about a performer who wasn't actually even there. As you've no doubt heard 2Pac - who died in 1996 - performed live at Coachella with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre - in the form of a hologram. Now I'm sure that if you're a big fan and you were at Coachella on acid or something, then I'll bet this was quite a trip. While Tupac's mother approves of this, I most certainly do not. I came across this cheeky item a couple days ago - for Coachella 2013 - featuring an all hologram lineup!
This is just wrong - and I don't mean just because The Beatles aren't headlining Sunday! I know that Damon Albarn has used this technology with the Gorillaz - but that was a different thing - it was to bring cartoon characters to life that were of his own creation. In the case of Tupac they're using a dead man's likeness as a performance puppet. He even greets the crowd with 'Wtf is up Coachella?' - who's saying that? Coachella started three years after he died - he never said that in his life, so it isn't sampled or prerecorded - it's FAKE. And of course it's without his consent. I suppose musicians will have to start stipulating in their wills whether or not they want their likeness used to perform for them after their deaths.
So what's next for Tupac - a co-headlining tour with Biggie? Apparently both the hologram's creators Digital Domain - and Snoop Dogg - have plans for a possible tour. Disgusting. I've already decided that I will never go to a 'concert' where a deceased artist is performing live as a hologram. Of course this is only the beginning - you know that someone somewhere in Memphis is already plotting the 'live' return of Elvis Presley (who's strangely absent from next year's Coachella lineup - I'm guessing because he's still alive!) with dollars signs in their eyes! Hopefully anyone with living relatives - as in the case of Elvis and The Beatles - would prevent such an atrocity from becoming a so-called reality. I certainly can't imagine John Lennon approving.
And once these hologram tours of dead artists start rising up everywhere you know it won't be a cheap show - I pity the fool willing to pay over $100 to see Bob Marley or whoever else may become a victim to this. They've already had numerous dead celebrities endorsing products on tv, so I guess this was inevitable, but I for one am not having it!
So let's tie in today's two themes - posthumous reality and 4/20 - with a classic from Raven Maize! 'The Real Life' was released as a single in the summer of 2001 on the Rulin Records label. The song blurs the lines of reality as well by featuring a vocal sample from Queen's song 'Bohemian Rhapsody' - who's singer Freddy Mercury died in 1991. Perhaps less obvious is that the song also nicks the keyboards from Simple Minds track 'Themes For Great Cities' from their 1981 album 'Sister Feeling Call'.

Gorillaz have just released a new single online featuring James Murphy and Andre 3000! The song is part of the Converse '3 Artists, 1 Song' series - and ties in with the release of the limited edition 'Chuck Taylor Gorillaz Collection' which features artwork designed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett:
Truth be told I've had a wicked hangover all day today, so I may be a bit harder to please than usual - but even after multiple listens I'm not sure that this song is to my liking. Although this single is a one off, I'd be much more excited to see/ hear a new song from Blur than Gorillaz.
The idea is certainly not unpossible as Damon Albarn will be reuniting with his Blur mates to headline a concert in London's Hyde Park on August 12 to coincide with the closing ceremonies of the summer Olympics. The concert is billed as the 'Best Of British' and will also feature The Specials and New Order - I want to go! It seems like the perfect time to debut something new, doesn't it?
While I keep that dream alive for now, today we have this new Gorillaz track - 'Do Ya Thing' - featuring former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy and Outkast's Andre 3000. My first impression was that it sounded rather similar to 'Feel Good Inc.' initially - but with far too many words/ too much knattering - and a much weaker musical backing track. I love James Murphy but I've never been a big fan of falsetto vocals - and Andre 3000's squawking about a new Outkast album is just plain annoying. But that's just my opinon - what do you think?

Gorillaz featuring James Murphy & Andre 3000 - 'Do Ya Thing' (Full 13 Minute Explicit Version) The four minute version of 'Do Ya Thing' is actually an edit of the song - the full version is set to be available on http://gorillaz.com/ on March 3rd, but it's already been leaked online. There's also an official video being released on Wednesday (the 29th) - and Gorillaz video's are usually pretty elaborate so I may add it on to this post later if it's good.
I like how this version gets rockier about four and half minutes in (and a bit spaced out near the end) but again I think Andre 3000 ruins it by shouting how he's 'the shit' endlessly - drop the 'the' and I'm tempted to agree with him. Instead of the usual 'Enjoy' I say listen if you dare... :)

While it hasn't sprouted any big hits like 'Dare' or 'Feel Good Inc.' this version of 'On Melancholy Hill' by Northern Ireland's Japanese Popstars released in July ranks among the years finest remixes for me...
