SummersRadio™ New Music! VCMG! (Vince Clarke & Martin Gore)

SummersRadio™ New Music! VCMG (Vince Clarke & Martin Gore) - 'Spock' (Original Mix)/ (Edit Select Remix) I'm sure that I wasn't the only Depeche Mode fan that thought it was a bit odd that Vince Clarke remixed their song 'Behind The Wheel' earlier this year for their 'Remixes 2: 81 - 11' release. Why would he suddenly choose to be involved with a band he left 30 years prior? Well it makes a bit more sense now - as Vince Clarke and Martin Gore have announced that they will be releasing a techno album together in the new year under the moniker VCMG!

The first taste of the album has been released this week in the form of 'EP 1: Spock' which is currently available exclusively on Beatport (in some parts of the world) and is set for a full release on December 12th - both digitally and on vinyl. The 'Spock' EP features five tracks (four on the 12") - the 'Original Mix' plus remixes from Edit Select aka Tony Scott, Karl O'Connor, DVS1 aka Derek VanScoten, and XOQ aka Uberzone - who also produced their debut album, which is due for release in the spring. It will be interesting to see how this project does sales wise. It's quite possible that it may remain somewhat underground appealing to mostly hardcore DM fans - but just imagine if these two decided to tour together - how massive would that show be?!

Apparently Vince Clarke had been listening to a lot of 'minimal dance music' and decided last year that he wanted to make a techno album. He sent Gore an e-mail asking if he'd be interested in collaborating and they began at first via e-mail while working in their respective studios, and they eventually met in person to discuss the project at a festival they were both performing at in London in May.

A techno album is certainly no big stretch musically speaking for either artist - as both gentlemen have had massively successful careers releasing largely keyboard based music for three full decades - both starting with Depeche Mode and then later with Yaz and Erasure for Clarke. While the origin of techno often points to Detroit in the mid to late 80's, one can listen to any number of Depeche Mode remixes around this same time period (and even prior to it) and hear many similar sounds.

So how does the first EP sound? Well it's a bit like Depeche Mode (shocker!) but without any conventional pop song structures - or vocals - so a lot like some of DM's remixes then! This is the first single from VCMG - 'Spock' - let's begin with the 'Original Mix' ... Enjoy!

This is the 'Edit Select Remix' - it's a bit darker and simplistic - and sounds like it would be well suited for late night highway driving, use in a film soundtrack, or for having sex to :) ... Enjoy!
