SummersRadio™ New Music! Spiritualized!
SummersRadio™ New Music! Spiritualized - 'Hey Jane'
London's Spiritualized have just released their new single called 'Hey Jane' online! 'Hey Jane' is the first single from the band's forthcoming seventh studio album called 'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' which is set for release on April 16th on the Double Six Records label.
The album will feature ten new tracks - this is the quite cool and rather amusing cover art:

'Hey Jane' has just been released on itunes in the U.K. on Monday (no word yet on a release date here in Canada) and it will be released physically on limited edition heavyweight 7" vinyl on the same day as the album (April 16th). You can pre-order the song on vinyl (which is divided into part one and two on the a and b sides) here: http://www.dominorecordco.com/uk/singles/14-02-12/hey-jane-/
'Hey Jane' starts off like your typical uptempo Spiritualized track - but there are a few things that stand out and make it sound different to me. One is that the female backing vocals are suprisingly upbeat - and Jason Pierce's vocals sound a bit different too - almost like Lou Reed during his Velvet Underground era. While there's no doubt that The Velvet Underground has influenced Spiritualized (and Spacemen 3's) previous work - even the song and album titles are reminiscent of the band - 'Hey Jane' and 'Sweet Jane' - 'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' and 'White Light/ White Heat' come to mind.
At nearly nine minutes long it's a rather epic tune with a number of tempo changes. There's a miniature 'Cop Shoot Cop' instrumental freakout about 3 minutes in, and it soon sounds like the song is ending - but it fades back in with the catchiness of a Wings tune. Then the last few minutes features a chorus that encapsulates the album title 'Sweet Heart Sweet Light' with layered backing vocals.
So there's no doubt that this is a Spiritualized tune - but with a few sprinkles reminiscent of other bands like the aforementioned Velvet Underground, Wings, and even Sonic Youth for a bit. It's the band's own sound - but with enough different bits to keep it fresh. While I (along with many others) consider 'Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' to be an absolute masterpiece, I've found the last two albums to be waning a bit - too much sameness - and just too much God talk for my taste. Thus this tune makes me hopeful that the new album - while not likely to be a complete departure - might have enough variances to make it stand out from the others.
This is Spiritualized's brand new single 'Hey Jane'... Enjoy!
