SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! Saint Etienne!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! Saint Etienne - 'Haunted Jukebox'

It's time to bring STARTLEFEST 2012 to a close - I hope you weren't too startled by what you've heard! We've got one more scary song though - 'Haunted Jukebox' is the closing track on Saint Etienne's latest album 'Words And Music By...'. I mentioned being haunted be ex-lovers previously - this song relates to that, but in this case it's the memory triggered by music itself that gets you.

'Haunted Jukebox' is certainly and apt title for Halloween - and let's be honest - what band is more frightening and evil than Saint Etienne - the Marilyn Manson of British electronic pop? Actually this post is the perfect segue - it's Halloween night, and tomorrow I travel to Seattle to see Saint Etienne live at the Showbox! I can't wait!!!

Behold the malevolent Saint Etienne and 'Haunted Jukebox'... Happy Halloween everyone! :)

Enjoy...

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! The 6ths!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! The 6ths Featuring Neil Hannon - 'The Dead Only Quickly Decay'

Halloween is at odds with itself. It's a fun time - and also a celebration that revolves around evil and fear. Ghosts, goblins, witches, demons and devils - what does it all add up to? What really happens when you die? Will you spend enternity in some fiery cave below the earth's crust because you told a lie when you were five, or because you once smoked a joint and said that you didn't inhale, when you really did?

Perhaps such things are just a bunch of bruhaha - maybe when we die, we simply die.

The average pop song is usually around three and a half minutes long - and the average dance tune maybe six minutes. There's aren't a lot of memorable tracks only a minute long - but we have an exception here. 'The Dead Only Quickly Decay' is a song from the 6ths second album called 'Hyacinths And Thistles' - say that one ten times fast - I dare you!

The 6ths are one of many side projects of Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields - although he writes all the songs he chooses a different singer to record the vocals on each track. This song features Neil Hannon from the Irish band The Divine Comedy. 'The Dead Only Quickly Decay' is both creepy and cheeky - who else but Merritt would think to rhyme decay and soufflé... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! Rare Remix! Siouxsie & The Banshees!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! Rare Remix! Siouxsie & The Banshees - 'Fear (Of The Unknown)' (12" Vertigo Mix)

Halloween allows humans to have fun with their fears - of death, what happens after death - and of the unknown in general. This Siouxsie & The Banshees remix is quite rare for a number of reasons - 'Fear (Of The Unknown)' was only released as a single in the U.S. - it's the band's only single that was never released in the U.K. And this '12" Vertigo Mix' was only released on vinyl, so it can be difficult to find. It's also likely Siousxie's only rave hit. Whaaaaaat? Yes, it's a rave remix!

'Fear (Of The Unknown)' was released as the third single from their 1991 album 'Superstition' - the original was produced by Stephen Hague. The U.S. 12" single featured two remixes from Junior Vasquez - this '12" Vertigo Mix' - and a dub version. While some may peg 1991 as the year that punk broke with the rise of Nirvana - it was also the year that club music and raves erupted in the North American underground scene.

And so it was this context that explains the massive keyboard hooks which may frighten some hardcore Siouxsie fans - and delight some others. I love the production on this... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! Classic! Love & Rockets!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2012 Halloween Spectacular! Classic! Love & Rockets - 'Haunted When The Minutes Drag'

What's scarier than being haunted by a thousand ghosts, spirits and demons? Being haunted by one person - who's still alive - an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend! Few musicians have summed up that experience as perfectly as Love & Rockets did with their song 'Haunted When The Minutes Drag' on their debut album 'Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven', which was released in October 1985.

Although never released as a single 'Haunted When The Minutes Drag' was featured in John Hughes 1988 film 'She's Having A Baby'. These guys know how to create a mood - Daniel Ash and David J did of course co-write the goth classic 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' as members of Bauhaus in 1979. So whatever you may be haunted by, may you find comfort in the chilling sounds of this atmospheric Love & Rockets classic... Enjoy!
