SummersRadio™ New Remix! Underworld!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Underworld - 'Dark And Long' (Christian Smith Tronic Treatment Remix) Well how wonderful it is to find that one of my all time favorite club tunes has just been remixed! Underworld have just released 'Dark And Long' featuring brand new mixes from Christian Smith this week! There are two remixes - the 'Christian Smith Tronic Treatment Remix' and the 'Christian Smith Hypnotica Dub' - and the single is released on Stockholm's Tronic label.

'Dark And Long' first appeared as the opening track on Underworld's epic 'dubnobasswithmyheadman' album in 1993. It was first released as a single in 1994 in the U.K. although surprisingly it peaked at only #57 on the singles chart. It was released on three separate 12" singles and two cd singles in the U.K. featuring a total of five remixes and a couple of edits.

The song later reached a much wider audience  when it was featured prominently in the 1996 film 'Trainspotting'. The 'Dark Train' mix is played as Ewan McGregor's character Mark is going through heroin withdrawal - the scene where the baby is crawling on the ceiling and turns it's head around a full 360 degrees like in The Exorcist!

So it's hard to top a classic but Christian Smith punches it up just enough to sound updated without ruining any of the perfect bits - this is the 'Christian Smith Tronic Treatment Mix' of Underworld's 'Dark And Long'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Old Tapes!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Old Tapes - 'Farewell'/ 'This Is Goodbye' EP Old Tapes are a new trio from New York consisting of brother and sister Michael and Lisa Kribs and David Lee Rad - and they've just released their debut EP called 'This Is Goodbye' on bandcamp today!

'This Is Goodbye' features six tracks - five originals plus a cover of Chris Issak's 'Wicked Game'. There's also going to be a 7" single released in October featuring two of those songs - 'Farewell' and 'What I Need Tonight'. If Old Tapes 'This Is Goodbye' EP is to your liking you can either buy the six song EP for $5 - or pre-order the 7" for $7 - which includes an instant download of the full EP here: http://oldtapes.bandcamp.com/

This song is the A-side on the single and the second song on the 'This Is Goodbye' EP - this is the sparse and beautiful 'Farewell' - I love the lyrics 'all of the space... inside your frown' - Enjoy!

Old Tapes describe their music as 'Indie Sex' - you can keep up with the band on their Facebook fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/oldtapes?sk=info

You can sample all six songs on the 'This Is Goodbye' EP right here - they're all good but in addition to 'Farewell' the opening track 'What I Need Tonight' is also a standout - and it has great potential for future club remixes... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Gaiser!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Gaiser - 'Some Slip'/ 'Elastrik' Jon Gaiser aka Gaiser is a Detroit-born Berlin-based artist/ producer who's just released a new EP called 'Some Slip'. It features two tracks - the original mixes of 'Some Slip' and 'Elastrik' - and is released on Richie Hawtin's M-nus label.

Both are pretty fun tunes - first up is the title track - I think that this one would be great for soundtracking a video montage that features scenes of you and a robot friend going on various rides at an amusement park. This is 'Some Slip'... Enjoy!

And this song would be good for a scene where you and your robot friend are dancing in the club :) This is 'Elastrik'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - 'The Death Of You And Me'/ 'The Good Rebel' Oasis' Noel Gallagher has released his first solo single this week! He's named his solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - and his new single 'The Death Of You And Me' was released in the U.K. on Monday.

'The Death Of You And Me' is not an all-conquering monster - but still a decent tune. It's no 'Don't Look Back In Anger' (the first Oasis single to feature Noel on lead vocals) - but you can still certainly hear the Beatles influences. Sales so far this week seem to agree - it's not going to hit number 1 - but it is expected to crack the top 10 on next week's charts. 'The Death Of You And Me' is available as a cd and vinyl single - as well as a download in the U.K. - but it's not even on itunes yet here in Canada!

'The Death Of You And Me' is the first single from Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds self titled (sort of) debut album which is due for release on October 17th. This is the video for the song - and it appears to be setting up some sort of story line - something about a mysterious stranger (Noel perhaps?) having a fondness for shagging in old school wagons apparently :) This is 'The Death Of You And Me'... Enjoy!

Naturally I'm going to post the b-side for 'The Death Of You And Me' as well - because SummersRadio™ is cool like that! This is 'The Good Rebel' and like the A-side at first I was kinda meh - but after a couple more listens I was digging the chorus. This is Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - 'The Good Rebel'... Enjoy!

'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' will be available in a plethora of formats on October 17th - including on cd, a cd+dvd combo, on vinyl, as a download - and as a cd+dvd+vinyl package - which also gets you the download! Why buy it just once when you can buy it thrice? :)

You can pre-order the package of your choosing here: http://www.noelgallagher.com/store/usd.php

Here's the album cover art for 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds':

SummersRadio™ New Music! Stephin Merritt!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Stephin Merrit! The 6th's - 'Riot In The Sun'/ The Magnetic Fields - 'Take Ecstasy With Me' (Alternate Version)

Stephin Merritt has just released a new collection of largely unreleased material called 'Obscurities' today! 'Obscurities' features 14 rare, out of print, and previously unreleased tracks from Stephin Merritt's solo  work (five songs)  - as well as from some of his various guises - The 6ths (two), The Gothic Archies (one), Buffalo Roam - which features vocals from Shirley Simms (one) and of course The Magnetic Fields (five songs).

'Obscurities' is fairly evenly split between Merritt's trademark sparse acoustic tunes and his drifty indie synth numbers - this one falling into the latter category. This is the fifth track on 'Obscurities' - from the 6ths - called 'Rot In The Sun' which was first released as the b-side to brilliantly titled 'Heaven In A Black Leather Jacket' single from 1993... Enjoy!

'Take Ecstasy With Me' is a track from The Magnetic Fields album 'Holiday' which was released in 1994. In this alternate version the vocals are sung by longtime contributor Susan Anway instead of Merritt - it first appeared on a compilation in 1999 called 'oh merge' which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Merge Records label - this is track 12 on 'Obscurities'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Daft Punk!

SummersRadio™ New Remix + Free Download! Daft Punk - 'Aerodynamic' (F.U.N.K.Y Remix) This song is currently soundtracking tonight's amazing sunset at English Bay - it's pefectly funky and chill at the same time! F.U.N.K.Y is a 19 year old electro producer from Lyon France. He's recently made this excellent remix of fellow Frenchmen Daft Punk's 'Aerodynamic' - which was one of the singles from 2001's 'Discovery' album.

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Kaiserdisco!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Kaiserdisco - 'Amalfino' (DelayNoMore Whistler Powder Mix) Kaiserdisco are a duo from Hamburg Germany consisting of Frederic Berger and Patrick Buck. 'Amalfino' was the A-side of their 'Cocktail' 12" which was released in November 2009.

DelayNoMore are also a duo - from here in Vancouver - consisting of Farshad Abasi and Sebastien Nault - aka Dj's Abasi and Ceebas respectively. They've kept this remix under wraps for some time but they're finally letting the cat out of the sac! The 'DelayNoMore Whistler Powder Mix' of 'Almafino' takes the original song and adds 'Elements' of Danny Tenaglia's classic track of the same name - which was released on Twisted Records in 1997 - to create a new club smash!

Danny Tenaglia's 'Elements' mentions 'Lula' who was featured on another awesome Twisted Records classic track from NYLX which you can revisit here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2010/11/summersradio-classic-nylx-feat-lula.html

SummersRadio™ New Music! CANT!

SummersRadio™ New Music! CANT - 'Believe' Seattle's Chris Taylor is the bassist for Brooklyn's indie folk band Grizzly Bear - and he's set to release his debut solo album next month! He records his solo work under the name CANT (in caps) - his first album is called 'Dreams Come True' and will be released on September 13th on the Warp Records label.

Chris Taylor is also a producer - besides producing a couple of Grizzly Bear releases, he also produced TV On The Radio's 'Return To Cookie Mountain' album, and last year's brilliant 'Big Echo' by The Morning Benders. Indeed it's the spacey dreamlike production on this song that quickly won me over - this is CANT's new single called 'Believe'...Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Remixes! Bjork!

SummersRadio™ New Remixes! Bjork - 'Crystalline' (Omar Souleyman Version - Antoniu Markis Refix)

Bjork has released not one, not two, but three new remix singles/ EP's on itunes today! There are two new EP's under the title of 'The Crystalline Series' - one called the 'Omar Souleyman Versions' and one called the 'Matthew Herbert Mixes'. And there's also a new EP for the song 'Cosmogony' also called the 'Matthew Herbert Mixes'. Across the three EP's there are a total of 9 tracks - 4 different songs (including two tracks not featured on 'Biophilia' - released on September 27th) and 6 remixes - let's break them down...

The first new EP of 'The Crystalline Series' - the 'Omar Souleyman Versions' features remixes of 'Crystalline' and two b-side tracks called 'Tesla', and 'Mawal'.

Omar Souleyman is a musician from Syria who performs traditional Middle Eastern songs in Kurdish and Arabic. He's released 'around' 500 studio and live albums! If you're a huge Bjork fan who buys all of her releases imagine how costly it would be to buy all of Omar's! 80% of his releases are recorded at weddings which are presented to the married couple - then they are later copied and sold at local kiosks. This is his remix of 'Crystalline'... Enjoy!

Bjork - Crystalline Omar Souleyman Remix (Antoniu Markis Refix) by Antoniu Markis

The second new EP in 'The Crystalline Series' - the 'Matthew Herbert Mixes' features mixes of 'Crystalline' - the 'Matthew Herbert Mix' and the 'Matthew Herbert Instrumental Mix'. Thus far only 30 second previews are available for both this and Herbert's remixes of 'Cosmogony' - so first here's a preview of his remix of 'Crystalline' (I will post full versions when they become available)...

Bjork - Crystalline [Matthew Herbert Remix - 30 second preview]

The third new EP is for the song 'Cosmogony' - which features 4 mixes of that song - two under that title - and two under the name of 'Cosmogony 2'. Each one features a 'Matthew Herbert Mix' and a 'Matthew Herbert Instrumental Mix'. Here's a preview of 'Matthew Herbert's Mix' of 'Cosmogony'...

SummersRadio™ New Music! Kaskade!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Kaskade featuring Mindy Gledhill - 'Eyes' (Extended Mix) San Francisco based artist/ dj/ producer Ryan Raddon aka Kaskade has just released his latest single called 'Eyes' this week! 'Eyes' is the title track from his forthcoming seventh studio album (not counting his mixed compilations) and the follow up to last year's 'Dynasty' and 'Dynasty (Extended Versions)' releases.

What sets this and many of Kaskade's tracks apart from a lot of generic sounding female vocal house tracks are the singers that he chooses to work with. As is the case with his two most recent singles 'All That You Give' and 'Callout', 'Eyes' features the vocals of Mindy Gledhill - who provides a both sweet and sincere delivery.

Mindy Gledhill has released three solo albums - her first was a Christian/ gospel album called 'Sum Of All Grace' which came out in 2004, followed by the more pop friendly 'Feather In The Wind' in 2007 and her most recent album 'Anchor' came out last summer. If you'd like to learn more about Mindy check out her official website here: http://www.mindygledhill.com/

'Eyes' is currently available exclusively on Beatport https://flash.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/home/detail/1/beatport#app=c390&a486-index=12 - it was just released on Tuesday and in just three days it's already entered the top 10 of their top 100! This is the 'Extended Mix' (the only mix released thus far) of 'Eyes' from Kaskade featuring Mindy Gledhill... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Concert News! Peaches! (DJ Set)

SummersRadio™ Concert News! Peaches - 'I Feel Cream' (Proxy Remix)/ R.E.M. featuring Peaches - 'Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter' Just announced - Peaches is performing at DJ set at Venue on September 3rd! Tickets are available now through Ticketweb: http://www.ticketweb.ca/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=3830335

While I generally wouldn't post about a dj set for an artist who also performs live - Peaches is pretty cool - and it gives me a perfect reason to feature one of my favorite remixes of recent years! 'I Feel Cream' is the title track - and was the third single released from - Peaches most recent album which came out in 2009. Peaches' vocals on 'I Feel Cream' are wonderfully sweet and sexy - and the production on this 'Proxy Remix' is nothing short of amazing - an electro 'I Feel Love' for the new millenium... Enjoy!

Earlier this year Peaches provided vocals on a track on R.E.M.'s latest album. She sings on 'Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter' - which is the ninth track on R.E.M. 's 15th (!) studio album called 'Collapse Into Now' which was released in March of this year. It's a fine upbeat track - in contrast to most of the sleepy offerings featured on some of R.E.M.'s previous more recent releases. Although it wasn't released as a single, R.E.M. decided to do a few things a bit differently this time around - including making videos for all 12 songs on the album. Peaches is featured in the video as well - this is 'Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter' - Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Microtrauma!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Microtrauma - 'Emilia' (Ambient Rework)/ 'Circulate' (Mononoid Remix) Microtrauma are a duo from Chemnitz Germany that have just released a new EP called 'Emilia'! The EP is released on the Cologne based Traum Schallplatten label and it features six tracks - four remixes of 'Circulate', a song called 'Outcry', and this version of the title track. This is the 'Ambient Rework' of the title track - a beautiful instrumental called 'Emilia'... Enjoy!

Microtrauma - Emilia (Ambient Rework) // Traum Schallplatten by Microtrauma

The other songs/ remixes on the 'Emilia' EP are perhaps best described by Microtrauma themselves on their Soundcloud page - as melodic techno. This is my favorite of the four remixes of 'Circulate' thus far - the graphic of a highway is most appropriate as this would make for a great driving song! This is the 'Mononoid Remix' of 'Circulate'... Enjoy!

'How Soon Is Now' was first released as the b-side of 'William, It Was Really Nothing' in 1984. After becoming a club and alternative radio hit in the U.S. it was added to the North American version of their 'Meat Is Murder' album, and it was later released as a proper single in the U.K. in 1985 - reaching #24. Although it wasn't one of their most successful singles chart wise, it's perhaps their most instantly reconizable song - particularly for Johnny Marr's opening guitar sound. This is the rather rare extended 'Manchester Mix' of 'How Soon Is Now?'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Music News! The Smiths! Part 1!

SummersRadio™ Music News! The Smiths - 'Paint A Vulgar Picture' Rhino Records in the U.K. has just announced that they're releasing three new limited edition Smiths boxed sets in October! The compilation is appropriately titled 'The Smiths Complete' and is released in the U.K. on October 3rd. It comes in three formats - a vinyl boxed set, a cd set, and a 'Deluxe Collector's Boxset' which combines both the vinyl and cd editions plus some more goodies.

Before I delve into further details I'm instantly reminded of one of my favorite Smiths songs - 'Paint A Vulgar Picture' from their 'Strangeways, Here We Come' album - which was their fourth and final studio album released in 1987. If you're not familiar the song it's a brilliant, brutally honest look at the music industry and how it keeps 'dead stars' alive. While all the members of The Smiths are alive and well - as is their music and it's influence - the fact is that the band hasn't recorded or performed together for 24 years! But then it is the music itself - and their fans - with some help from the record companies - that keeps them alive.

Allow me to quote a few lyrics from 'Paint A Vulgar Picture'...

"Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)"...

"Best of ! Most of !
Satiate the need
Slip them into different sleeves !
Buy both, and feel deceived"

And here is the full song in all its ironic glory - featuring a fan video collection of photographs. I love it when Morrissey croaks about 5:05 in... Enjoy!

And now onto the details of those boxed sets released on October 3rd - here's a blurb about their general contents:

'Rhino Records UK is proud to present ‘Complete’, eight albums by The Smiths lovingly reworked by Johnny Marr and Rhino UK and packaged together for the first time - the ultimate The Smiths remasters collection.

SummersRadio™ New Music! Neon Indian!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Neon Indian - 'Polish Girl'/ 'Fallout' Texas chillwave band Neon Indian are set to release their second studio album called 'Era Extraña' on September 13th! 'Era Extraña' is the follow up to their 2009 debut 'Psychic Chasms' (and 2010's subsequent remix album called 'Mind Ctrl: Psychic Chasms Possessed') and it will be released on songwriter/ main man Alan Palomo's own Static Tongues label.

'Era Extraña' will feature 13 new songs - two of which have surfaced on the interweb this week - first we shall begin with the second track on the album called 'Polish Girl'. This is the more chillwave/ poppier sounding track of the two... Enjoy!

And this is track six on Neon Indian's forthcoming new album - called 'Fallout'. Out of these two songs I'm finding this one more to my liking. It starts out with keyboards akin to Tangerine Dream - and then the vocal delivery resembles the vibe of one of the Jesus & Mary Chain's slower, more mellow tunes... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Boys Noize & Erol Alkan featuring Jarvis Cocker!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Boys Noize & Erol Alkan featuring Jarvis Cocker - 'Avalanche (Terminal Velocity)' Well this is quite the collaboration - Germany's Alexander Ridha aka Boys Noize, London's Erol Alkan, and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker are three very talented musical gentlemen - so perhaps not surprisingly this is a uniquely powerful track - there is nothing else quite like it!

'Avalanche' began it's existence as an instrumental track by Boys Noize & Erol Alkan that was released as a single in April of last year. This new recording features the vocals of Jarvis Cocker and has been slighty renamed 'Avalanche (Terminal Velocity)'.

I've enjoyed Jarvis's forays into electronic music in recent years - including recording two songs with Air on their 2007 album 'Pocket Symphony' - and more recently last year's collaboration with Discodeine, which you can revist here:

This is 'Avalanche (Terminal Velocity)'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Phunk Investigation!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Phunk Investigation - 'Opera' (Original Mix)/ 'Guru' (Original Mix) Phunk Investigation are a dj/ production duo - Dino and Stef - that formed in Italy in 2000. They've just releaased their latest EP called 'Synapse' this week! 'Synapse' features three different songs - 'Guru', 'Lo-Fi' and 'Opera' and is released on the BluFin label. It's currently available exclusively on Beatport here: (I just bought a copy!)  :)
https://flash.beatport.com/enUS/html/content/home/detail/1/beatport#app=60e2&a486-index

All three tracks are filled with sweet sweet techno goodness so I'm posting a couple - starting with track 3 - 'Opera' - and I reckon this is one fine production... Enjoy!

I realized when I first listened to this song that it had been a while since I've posted a track with some upfront cowbell. We need more cowbell!! And here it is via the first track on the new 'Synapse EP' from Phunk Investigation called 'Guru' (please note that this is an edited version - the full song is 7:48 - so there's actually about three more minutes of awesomeness)... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Classic Remix! Snow Patrol!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Classic Remix! Snow Patrol - 'Called Out In The Dark'/ 'Open Your Eyes' (Redanka Remix) Northern Ireland's Snow Patrol are set to release a new digital EP on September 4th! It's entitled 'Called Out In The Dark' and it contains four songs - the title track plus three other new songs called 'My Brothers', 'I'm Ready' and 'Fallen Empires'. 'Fallen Empires' is actually the title track from their forthcoming new album - their sixth studio release. This is the artwork for the single:

The video for 'Called Out In The Dark' was just shot on the weekend and is due for release soon. It was choreographed by Noemie Lafrance who also worked on Feist's videos for '1234' and 'My Moon My Man'! For now we have the audio - this is 'Called Out In The Dark'... Enjoy!

One thing cool about Snow Patrol is that they've released quite a number of decent remixes - and I suspect it won't be long before some of 'Called Out To The Dark' begin to surface - as there are a number of subtle keyboard bits that can easily be brought to the forefront. Here's a classic remix of their song 'Open Your Eyes' by Redanka - which was released in 2007 as the fifth single from their 'Eyes Open' album... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Concert News! Feist!

SummersRadio™ Concert News! Feist - 'Anti-Pioneer' (preview)/ 'Caught A Long Wind' (preview)/ 'The Bad In Each Other' (preview)/ 'Lonely Lonely' (Frisbee'd Remix) Just announced - Leslie Feist returns to Vancouver on November 18th - at the Center For Performing Arts! Tickets go on sale this Friday - with a Live Nation pre-sale happening on Thursday. (keyword 'electric') Scheduled dates for the tour thus far begin in Amsterdam in October and run until December.

Feist will be touring in support of her fourth studio album - or her fifth counting her currently unavailable first album - 1999's Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down) - called 'Metals' which is due for release on Oct. 3rd (U.K.)/ 4th (North America). The album features 12 tracks and this is the rather beautiful album cover artwork...

Feist is gradually releasing video snippets from 'Metals' - she's released three so far - with the fourth sample set to be released on Friday August 5th. You can keep up to date with the latest album previews on her official website here: http://www.listentofeist.com/#vignette7 This one is 'Metals #7' which - if the album tracklisting is the same as these preview numbers - is called 'Anti-Pioneer'... Enjoy!

This preview is listed as 'Metals #3' - so providing Feist isn't trying to trick us, and this is indeed track three - it's called 'Caught A Long Wind' - and the video features footage from the recording session... Enjoy!

And this preview is called 'Metals #1' - which suggests it's track one on 'Metals' - which is called 'The Bad In Each Other'. This sounds like it could very well be the actual album intro - perhaps Feist had the urge to rock out for a minute to address her aggro side! She did once play in a punk band called Placebo (not the U.K. band) in Alberta that opened for Radiohead in 1993 after all! Enjoy!

While previews and snippets serve their purpose - they can also be frustrating at times - you know like when someone acts like they're really interested in you at a party, and then they end up just disappearing! So here's a full length song to ease the anxiety! :) This is the 'Frisbee'd Mix' of her song 'Lonely Lonely' which first appeared on 2004's 'Let It Die' album - and this version is from her 2006 remix album called 'Open Season'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Blu Mar Ten!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Blu Mar Ten - 'Five Summers' My apologies for the lack of posts in recent days, but I've just returned from a long weekend spent at the Bass Coast Music Festival! I'm exhausted and completely covered in mosquito bites, but it was a great time! This is one song that stood out when played by SHAHdj's Kir Mokum on the main stage on Sunday night. The sun was just setting and everything seemed just right!

Blu Marten began as a London duo consisting of founding members Leo Wyndham and Chris Marigold that formed in the 'big bang of drum & bass' in 1995. Since then they've embraced many genres including downtempo, house, breaks, techno and leftfield. In 2004 they became a trio with the addition of Michael Tognarelli, and they're set to release their fourth studio album later this year. This is their latest single called 'Five Summers'... Enjoy!
