SummersRadio™ New Video! St. Vincent - 'Cheerleader'
Annie Erin Clark aka St. Vincent has released the official video for her latest single 'Cheerleader'! Clark began her music career as a member of the Texas symphonic rock band The Polyphonic Spree in 2003, and later joined Sufjan Stevens' touring band in 2006 and released her debut EP called 'Paris Is Burning'. She released her debut full length album in 2007 called 'Marry Me', and 'Actor' followed in 2009.
'Cheerleader' is the third single released from her third album called 'Strange Mercy' which came out last September on the 4AD Records label. The video directed by Hiro Murai features some cool special effects portraying St. Vincent as a rather fragile larger than life exhibit in an art gallery... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Remixes! Yoko Ono!
SummersRadio™ New Music + Remixes! Yoko Ono - 'Will I' (Creamer & K Mix)/ 'Walking On Thin Ice' (FKEK Vocal Mix)/ 'Everyman... Everywoman...' (Passengerz Ono Mixshow)/ 'She Gets Down On Her Knees' (Morel Mix)
Yoko Ono turns 79 today - Happy Birthday Yoko! The average person's knowledge of Yoko Ono's music is probably her half of 1980's 'Double Fantasy' album with John Lennon - but Yoko is now into her fifth decade of recording a wide range of musical styles. Unless you're a big fan like myself you may be rather surprised to know that for the last decade she's had a very successful run of dance/ club singles released - featuring remixes of earlier recordings by some of the world's top dj's and producers.
Now it may seem odd at first to think that a woman in her 70's is making house and electronic club hits, but she's always been recording cutting edge music. In fact her first recording with John Lennon was in 1968 with an album called 'Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins' - an album of experimental electronic music. So to celebrate her 79th birthday I shall feature some of my favorites from this new remix era - including her newest club single 'She Gets Down On Her Knees' which has just been released this month.
As a fan of Yoko Ono one thing that bothers me is how very much hate is unnecessarily thrown her way - when she's dedicated so much of her life to promoting peace. (http://imaginepeace.com/) It's mostly from people who foolishly try and blame her for breaking up the Beatles - and by those who don't appreciate or get her music or her art. She has all too often been the butt of weak jokes - in fact I just saw a movie trailer on tv for the new Reese Witherspoon vehicle which features a Yoko Ono joke in it - in the trailer! If that's supposed to be one of the funniest bits of the movie I hardly think it's going to be a blockbuster. In my opinion a Yoko Ono joke is the sign of a lazy uninspired comedy writer - they're seldom funny - usually just cheap shots capitalizing on the fact that her name is so recognizable within pop culture.
Naturally Yoko is well aware of this, and as a response to far too many lame 'Oh, no!' jokes Yoko decided to drop her first name for these remix projects - releasing them under the name 'ONO'. Since 2001 she has released 16 remix singles with every one charting on Billboard's Dance charts - with 11 of those reaching the top five - and nine of them have hit number one! This places her in the top 20 list of artists with the most number one dance hits in the United States - surpassing some other well known artists such as New Order, Kylie Minogue, and even Michael Jackson - and this sees her tied with Depeche Mode!
This first remix didn't hit number one, but it's one of my favorites by association. At the time of it's release I was dj'ing at a cool downtown Vancouver venue called DV8 Lounge - which sadly was recently leveled to expand a nearby park - which is still better than say, building a parking lot! I would also play visuals - trippy dvd compilations - and this song fit well with one that featured gorgeous scenery of the sky and bodies of water - and she references such things in the song.
'Will I' was originally a track from her 1995 album called 'Rising' and 'Will I/ 'Fly' was released as a remix single in 2003 - this is the 'Creamer & K Mix' by John Creamer and Stephane K... Enjoy!
'Walking On Thin Ice' is one of Yoko Ono's more successful solo singles - and it was also the song that she and John Lennon had just finished recording on the night he was fatally shot - on December 8th, 1980. It was subsequently released as a single at the end of January 1981 with the title listed on the cover as 'Walking On Thin Ice - For John'. This is one of ten remixes that were released as a single in 2003 - by artists such as the Pet Shop Boys, Danny Tenaglia and Felix Da Housecat. A lot of the remixes are really good but I particularly like the groove of this 'FKEK Vocal Mix' by Francois Kevorkian and Eric Kupper... Enjoy!
'Everyman Has A Woman Who Love Him' is a track from the 'Double Fantasy' album, which was released as a single in 2004 featuring 12 (!) remixes. It was retitled 'Everyman... Everywoman...' and the lyrics were changed to include gay and lesbian couples! This is the 'Passengerz Ono Mixshow' remix... Enjoy!

This is Ono's newest remix single - 'She Gets Down On Her Knees' - originally a track from her 1981 album 'Season Of Glass'. This is the 'Morel Mix'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Black Tambourine!
SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Black Tambourine featuring The Rinettes - 'What's Your Game'
Black Tambourine have just released their latest single online - and it features backing vocals from Kristen Gundred aka Dee Dee from the Dum Dum Girls! Black Tambourine are a 'noisy pop' band that formed in Washington D.C. in 1989 and were influenced by the sounds of Phil Spector, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Ramones, and artists signed to Alan McGee's label Creation Records.
They were together for only a short time and they released only two EP's in the early 90's, but they in turn have gone on to influence newer indie pop bands such as The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and the Dum Dum Girls - and they've recently reformed!
In fact Dee Dee notes on the Dum Dum Girls Facebook page that it's a 'huge honor to sing backups for a band that means a lot to me.' 'What's Your Game' features The Rinettes on backing vocals that includes Linda Smith, Rose Melberg, Jenny Robbins, and Dee Dee herself. The song is from Black Tambourine's forthcoming new EP of Ramones covers called 'OneTwoThreeFour' which is due for release on May 15th on their label Slumberland Records.
If this song is to your liking you can download a copy for free on Soundcloud courtesy of Slumberland Records here: http://soundcloud.com/slumberland-records/black-tambourine-whats-your

SummersRadio™ New Music! The Kills!
SummersRadio™ New Music! The Kills - 'Pale Blue Eyes'
The Kills have just released a new four track EP for their latest single - to celebrate their 10th anniversary of making music - featuring three brand new classic cover songs! 'The Last Goodbye' EP features the title track and latest single (the fourth) released from last year's 'Blood Pressures' album - plus covers of The Velvet Underground's 'Pale Blue Eyes', Marilyn Monroe's 'One Silver Dollar', and Patsy Cline's 'Crazy'.
The EP is out now on itunes this week, and it will also be available on limited edition 7" picture disc and 10" vinyl on February 28th which you can pre-order here: http://www.dominorecordco.com/uk/singles/04-01-12/the-last-goodbye (7" or 10") or here: http://www.musicdirect.com/p-62939-the-kills-the-last-good-bye-limited-edition-12-vinyl-ep.aspx (10" only)
Now I'm a fan of both bands so I'll tread lightly here (you can check out/ revisit some of our previous posts featuring The Kills here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/01/summersradio-concert-news-kills.html, here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/02/summersradio-new-music-kills.html, and m'here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/09/summersradio-new-music-remixes-death-in.html) but I must say that The Kills version pales slightly in comparison to the original.
Alison Mosshart has a lovely voice, but she lacks the sheer raw emotion here inherent in Lou Reed's vocal performance. That's not to say I don't enjoy this one too - because I do - the guitar has a much bluesier feel here as well. The Kills have actually been performing this song live for several years - it's just, you know - it's The Velvet Underground! But it's a quality cover and certainly postworthy, so... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! The Velvet Underground's original from their self titled third album which was released in 1969... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Presents... Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular! Grand Finale! Sugar Plant! + Bonus Poem!
SummersRadio™ Presents... 'Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular'! Grand Finale! Sugar Plant - 'Happy'/ Lindze Roy - 'Love' (a poem)
And now the final post in our second annual Valentine's Day Spectacular! I hope you enjoyed the music - the classics from the vaults, the new remixes, the free downloads, and the shiny things! :)
Sugar Plant are a Japanese dream pop duo based in Tokyo consisting of Chinatsu Shoyama and Shin'ichi Ogawa. They released their first full length debut album called 'After After Hours' in Japan in 1996, and it was released the following year in North America. 'Happy' is the title track from the 'Happy' mini album which was released in 1998 in Japan - and as a double cd called 'Happy/ Trance Mellow' in North America later that year. The release was out of print for many years, but it's now available again on itunes.
The 'Happy' mini album is one of my most favorite releases - as it's dreamy, spacey, hypnotic, romantic, and so much more - and the title track is about being around someone who makes you feel that way. Mark my words - this time next year I will no longer be single!!
This is 'Happy'... Enjoy!
This is a poem a friend named Lindze Roy wrote in December that I think is most fitting for Valentine's Day - not only because it's called 'Love' - but also because it looks at love from an in between place. And even if you or I may not have the love we seek today, I hope that we all find the love that we're looking for very soon.
Happy Valentine's Day 2012 from SummersRadio™! ♥
'Love'
by Lindze Roy (used with permission)
As I consider your embrace
and long to know your taste,
envisioning your eyes, your face.
I am struck by blasts of loves
from the past.
This familiar lust
once turned to dust.
before it has begun
I’ve got it undone
Perhaps if I don’t let it settle
I won’t have to feel my blood boil like some steaming kettle
my heart ache
the question was it all fake?
Then I catch myself
fallen as I may be
This rant is not me
It is fear and scarcity
all washed in self-pity
I have loved before and it was true
just as the love I give anew
I am the one to let love pass through
First for me
and then for all of you.
It will be in our embrace
I will feel it as I kiss your face
This love is not to be contained
nor can it be claimed
Abundance is where love dwells
Knowing of the wells of selves
we fill, and fill
and find peace
and be still
Then and only then will love come
and it can never be undone.
Love shared
is like a life spared
the reciprocal appreciation
is enough to save a nation
Love has no take backs
No false acts
It is to be given freely
bringing pure joy
as your individual path is unfurled and swirled
to create
what is to be your souls mate
Knowing this is what is at stake
I will open my heart without debate
Come in to my own bliss
and though I may miss
loves of the past
or feel they were gone too fast
Love is a tide in life
guided by none but the moon
so it is never gone too soon
Oceans swells may come and go
but the ocean is not gone because the tide is low
A new moon brings new flow
I am blessed to offer my love through you
to see it manifest as expressed with you
Knowing I am part of something grand
and in this divine love is where I stand

SummersRadio™ Presents... 'Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular'! New Video! MMOTHS featuring Keep Shelly In Athens - 'Heart' (includes free download)
While it was only three weeks ago that we featured MMOTHS new recording of their single 'Heart' (http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2012/01/summersradio-new-music-free-download_23.html) that now features the vocals of Keep Shelly In Athens - the band have just premiered the official video for the song today - ever so appropriately for Valentine's Day!
The dreamy track's video suits the song as it's pretty chill - basically a bunch of friends going to a bush party - complete with masks and fireworks! Good times. And if 'Heart' is to your liking the good news is that it's still available as a free download on their Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/mmoths#!/mmoths?sk=app_215273918564465

This is MMOTHS featuring Keep Shelly In Athens brand new video for 'Heart'... Enjoy! ♥

SummersRadio™ Presents... Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular! Classic! Julie Brown!
SummersRadio™ Presents... 'Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular'! Classic! Julie Brown - 'The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun' (Unedited!)
Love can blossom at any age - I actually remember going to buy a ring for a girlfriend I had named Debbie - in grade one or two! True story - and 'Debi' is also the subject of this song - weirdness. Of course some might say that it's high school where first loves are usually found - and 'The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun' tells the story of a mysterious love affair that's gone terribly wrong.
Julie Brown is an American singer, comedian, and actress who first released this song in 1984 as the b-side to her single 'I Like 'Em Big And Stupid' - and it gained popularity when it was soon played on the Dr. Demento Show. The song is a spoof of 50's teen romance songs - and was released at a time before actual school shootings became a tragic reality. The song was later included on her debut album called 'Trapped In The Body Of A White Girl' which was released in 1987 - and a new recording of the song is included on her 2011 compilation album called 'Smell The Glamour - The Diamond Tiara Edition' - both of which are available on itunes.
So we continue our Valentine's Day Spectacular moving from one cheeky song to another - this is the original unedited version (there's also an edited version on youtube that changes some of the best lyrics - booo!) of the song and video for 'The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Presents... Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular! Classic! The Extras!
SummersRadio™ Presents... 'Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular'! Classic! The Extras - 'Circular Impression'
Whether you have a partner or not, who doesn't want to get laid on Valentine's day ideally? Just remember - safety first! 'Circular Impression' tells the amusing tale of a young man who's been carrying a condom around in his wallet for some time. The Extras were a band from Toronto that released their debut album in 1981 called 'Bit Parts' featuring the single 'Circular Impression' which became a local hit.
I looked for a copy of this song on vinyl forever to no avail - but thankfully their label Ready Records released a compilation a few years ago that features the single. 'The Best Of Ready Volume 1: Ready Records 1979 - 1985' was released on cd in 2007 and is currently available on itunes for a mere $5.99. The compilation features 12 tracks including other Toronto area new wave bands from the era such as Blue Peter and The Spoons.
So if you're not likely to score this Valentine's Day, perhaps this song is for you - or even if you do - it's still pretty highlarious. Last year as part of the 30th anniversary of the song, a video was made for the very first time from some old school footage - this is The Extra's 'Circular Impression'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Presents... Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular! Rare Remixes + Free Downloads! Eurythmics!
SummersRadio™ Presents... 'Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular'! Rare Remixes + Free Downloads! Eurythmics - 'Love Is a Stranger' (Razorsharp Even Stranger Dub)/ (E.M.B. Project Remix) (includes free download)/ (Brutal Mix) (includes free download)/ (Extended Ultra Traxx Retro Mix 1982)
It's that time of year again - Valentine's Day - the day for lovers. And here I am, single again - for the like 100th year in a row - or so it feels. However, as I stated last year music is my one true love, and as always I will share it with you! You can check out/ revisit last year's first official SummersRadio™ presents 'Love Stinks! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular' special here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/search/label/Love%20Stinks%3A%20A%20Valentine%27s%20Day%20Spectacular
So single or not, this years 'Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular' shall be filled with fun, mystery and romance! So much so that we shall begin here on Valentine's Day Eve - with a BIG PACKAGE... of remixes! :)
Eurythmics classic 'Love Is A Stranger' makes some very accurate statements about love and the search for it - accompanied by a sublime hypnotic synthesized groove. But it wouldn't be SummersRadio™'s style to just post the original, so instead we shall feature a menage a trois of recent remixes (that includes two free downloads) and a very rare super extended remix of the original.
'Love Is A Stranger' was first released as a single in 1992 from their album 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' - and it was re-released in the U.K. in 1991. Here are the lyrics to a few of my favorite verses in the song:
Love is a danger
Of a different kind
To take you away
And leave you far behind
And love love love
Is a dangerous drug
You have to receive it
And you still can't
Get enough of the stuff
It's savage and it's cruel
And it shines like destruction
Comes in like the flood
And it seems like religion
It's noble and it's brutal
It distorts and deranges
And it wrenches you up
And you're left like a zombie
...
It's guilt edged
Glamorous and sleek by design
You know it's jealous by nature
False and unkind
It's hard and restrained
And it's totally cool
It touches and it teases
As you stumble in the debris
This is a very cool remix from 2009 by Chicago's Victor Lua and Daniel Bahena aka NumO Dan aka RazorSharp called the 'Razorsharp Even Stranger Dub'... Enjoy!
This is fine progressive remix from 2011 - by Elias Mariano aka E.M.B. Project - who's from Maringa Brazil. If this remix is to your liking you can download a copy for free from his Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/embproject/eurythmics-love-is-a-stranger-e-m-b-project-remix (or simply click on the download icon below)
This is the 'E.M.B. Project Remix'... Enjoy!
Here's another recent remix - this one is from last summer - a rather trippy take with a nice swagger by Don Vaillancourt aka Vee Factory from Toronto. If this remix is to your liking you can download a copy for free from his Soundcloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/mofoghetto/eurtythmics-love-is-a-stranger
This is Vee Factory's 'Brutal Mix'... Enjoy!
And here's the rare 'Extended Ultra Traxx Retro Mix 1982' of the original - that still sounds amazing 30 years on... Enjoy!
Lots more to come tomorrow on SummersRadio™'s presentation of 'Love Stinks 2! - A Valentine's Day Spectacular' - stay tuned ♥

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Elliott Smith!
SummersRadio™ New Remix! Elliott Smith - 'Needle In The Hay' (Young Edits Electronic Mix)
Luke Foskey aka Young Edits aka Youth is a dj/ producer from Brisbane Australia who's just released his latest remix online - of Elliott Smith's song 'Needle In The Hay'! We previously featured another Young Edits remix last October - of Joy Divsion's 'She's Lost Control' which you can check out/ revisit here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/10/summersradio-new-remix-joy-division.html
'Needle In The Hay' was first released on Elliott Smith's self titled second album in 1995, and it was also included on the soundtack to Wes Anderson's 2001 film 'The Royal Tenenbaums'. Young Edits keeps the feel of the original intact in this tasteful remix - he describes it in his own words thusly 'Elliot Smith is one of those incredible artists that can provoke emotion through such minimalistic instrumentation. I've tried to keep that whilst giving a somewhat more dance-orientated undercurrent.'

This is the new 'Young Edits Electronic Mix' of Elliott Smith's 'Needle In The Hay' ... Enjoy!
