SummersRadio™ New Music! Air featuring Victoria Legrand!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Air featuring Victoria Legrand - 'Seven Stars' Air are releasing a new album called 'Le Voyage Dans La Lune' ('A Trip To The Moon') in February - and the first new song from it has surfaced online! The 11 track album is set for release on February 6th and will be available in several formats - as a single cd, a limited cd plus bonus dvd combo, and as a digital download.

The album was inspired by the French silent black and white science fiction film from 1902 which was written and directed by Georges Melies. A newly restored hand-coloured version of the film was released earlier this year featuring new music from Air - which they later decided to extend into a full length album. The 16 minute film will be included with both the limited dvd and digital releases.

The album features two collaborations - a song called 'Who Am I Now?' features Brooklyn's Au Revior Simone and 'Seven Stars' features Victoria Legrand from Baltimore's Beach House.

Here's the full tracklisting:

  1. "Astronomic Club"
  2. "Seven Stars" (with Victoria Legrand)
  3. "Retour sur terre"
  4. "Parade"
  5. "Moon Fever"
  6. "Sonic Armada"
  7. "Who Am I Now?" (with Au Revior Simone)
  8. "Décollage"
  9. "Cosmic Trip"
  10. "Homme lune"
  11. "Lava"

SummersRadio™ Music News + Rare Track! Underworld!

SummersRadio™ Music News! Underworld - 'Rez'/ 'Why Why Why' Underworld have just announced that they will be the official Music Directors of the opening ceremonies for London's 2012 Summer Olympic games! And - they're also releasing two new compilations next month!

The duo will work with British filmmaker and producer Danny Boyle (who's been appointed as the Artistic Director of the opening ceremonies) and will be responsible for all the music featured in the three hour ceremony happening on July 27th (my birthday!) 2012. Underworld have collaborated with Danny Boyle numerous times over the years - starting with his 1996 film Trainspotting which prominently featured their songs 'Born Slippy' and 'Dark Train'. Underworld have also provided music for his films 'A Life Less Ordinary', 'The Beach' and 'Sunshine' - and last year they collaborated on the British National Theatre production of 'Frankenstein'.

Karl Hyde says that their goal will be 'to leave people with a musical memory of the show rather than a purely visual one. It's a great honour to be asked to do this and one we're taking very seriously'. I'm not a big fan of the Olympic games - having endured many of the associated hassles of hosting the games first hand here in Vancouver last year - but I suspect that I'll still be tuning in to this one just for the music!

Before I get into the tracklist details of their two new compilations let's revisit one of their finest songs - this is 'Rez'... Enjoy!

Underworld are releasing two new compilations on January 23rd - one called 'Anthology 1992 - 2012' - and one called 'A Collection'. 'A Collection' will be a single disc set featuring 16 songs spanning their lengthy career - including three new '2011 Edits' of older tracks. 'Anthology 1992 - 2012' is essentially an update of their 2003 double cd compilation '1992 - 2002' but with a bit of a twist. The tracklisting has been changed - leaving out some of their lesser known songs in favor of newer singles - and a third bonus disc of previously unreleased tracks and rarities has been added!

Here's the artwork and tracklisting for 'A Collection':

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Ryan Riback & John Baptiste!

SummersRadio™ New Remix! Ryan Riback & John Baptiste - 'Kids These Days' (Silversix Remix) Melbourne Australia's Ryan Riback and John Baptiste have released a new EP of remixes for their new single 'Kids These Days'! 'Kids These Days' was first released last month on a four track EP featuring the original mix and three remixes on the Pop Rox Muzik label. They've now also just released three more new remixes on the Suckmusic label!

'Kids These Days' is a bit of a social commentary that addresses some of the social habits and issues facing kids today. And it's about time I say - I mean they talk about drinking and misbehaving, taking drugs - listening to techno music even! Well I never. I mean, come on. I certainly don't go around drinking and... oh. And clearly I never take any drugs or... um, wait. And techno music... hmmm. Ok kids - Party On! :)

This is the 'Silversix Remix' of  Ryan Riback & John Baptiste's track 'Kids These Days'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Paperfangs!

SummersRadio™ New Music + Free Download! Paperfangs - 'Lifelong' I fell in love with Finland's Paperfangs just over a year ago I reckon - in fact it was on November 9th 2010 - a Tuesday. I like their mix of both acoustic and electronic instruments - and their use of samples. I also quite like the singer - his melancholy but romantic voice reminds me a bit of Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello and in another way Jon Marsh from The Beloved. Back in 2010 I could only feature one song per post due to Fb issues so I posted their first two songs separately. You can revisit one of their first releases - and their very first video - for 'Books' here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2010/11/summersradio-new-music-paperfangs.html

Their song 'Oh I Wandered'
http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2010/11/summersradio-new-music-paperfangs.html made my Best Of 2010 list last year. Speaking of which - it's getting near that time again - I've been making some mental notes for a while now actually - so coming soon then!

Today we have a brand new Paperfangs song called 'Lifelong' that's just been released on Soundcloud this week! If it's to your liking it's available as a free download here: http://soundcloud.com/paperfangs/lifelong (or click on the download arrow below) and you can keep up with the band on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Paperfangs

'Lifelong' features an enthusiastic (and possibly insane) sounding child's vocal sample - great keyboard sounds - and the wonderfully simple yet romantic lyric(s) 'You said lifelong/ is it still on'. It also has some kind of cool bell - not cow per se - perhaps tubular :) ... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Age Of Love!

SummersRadio™ Classic! Age Of Love - 'Age Of Love' (Watch out For Stella Mix) I mentioned yesterday that parts of Harvey McKay's new song 'Supercell' reminded me of the club classic 'Age Of Love' - and the song has been in my head pretty much ever since - so I think my brain wants me to post it!

'Age Of Love' was a one off project written by two producers - Italy's Bruno Sanchioni and Belgium's Roger Samijn - released under the same name as the song itself. The song was first released in 1990 on the Belgian label DiKi Records (DiKi standing for Disco King) and it featured some rather terribly cheesy sounding male lead vocals. It wasn't until 1992 when it was re-released on London's React label featuring 'The Jam & Spoon Remixes' (thankfully sans male vocals - but keeping the female vocals of Dutch model and singer Karen Mulder!) that it became a club anthem.

Jam and Spoon were a production duo from Frankfurt Germany consisting of Rolf Ellmer aka Jam El Mar and Markus Loffel aka Mark Spoon (who sadly died of a heart attack in 2006). It is their 'Watch Out For Stella Club Mix' ('Stella' being the name of one of their own landmark songs released the same year - you can revisit a remix of it here: http://summersradio.blogspot.com/2011/02/summersradio-classic-remix-jam-spoon.html) that has withstood the test of time to become a true club classic.

It's the initial build up of this remix - especially the keyboard bit between 1:50 and 2:35 - that lifts you up and leaves you suspended in mid air for a few seconds - that has undoubtably left many people (myself included) feeling a bit like this the first time they heard it in a club... :)

This is a fan made video - as a tribute to Mark Spoon - for Age Of Love's track 'Age Of Love' - Jam & Spoon's 'Watch Out For Stella Club Mix'... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Harvey McKay! Alan Fitzpatrick!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Harvey McKay - 'Supercell' (Original Mix)/ Alan Fitzpatrick - 'Running Backwards' (Original Mix) Sweden's finest (and one of the world's finest) techno label(s) Drumcode are celebrating their 15th anniversary with the release of a brand new compilation fittingly titled '15 Years Of Drumcode'. This compilation may not be what one might expect though - it's no greatest hits collection - they're not flogging the past - they're flogging the future! :)

'15 Years Of Drumcode' features 28 tracks - and all of them are brand new! It actually makes sense for a forward thinking label - especially when they're clearly in their prime. Actually after listening to these 28 tracks, this compilation suggests to me that their best is still yet to come. There's no shortage of quality tunes here - I could easily feature this compilation over a few different posts. However, for now I've chosen my two favorite songs so far - if they're to your liking you can check out some of the other 26 new songs on the compilation (which is currently available as a download exclusively on Beatport) here:
http://www.beatport.com/#release/15-years-of-drumcode/838119 and '15 Years Of Drumcode' is also available physically as a double cd.

First up we have Glasgow dj/ producer Harvey McKay with his song called 'Supercell' - the 27th track on the compilation. I totally love the superbly hypntoic production on this one - it reminds me a bit of one of my all time favorite club tunes - Age Of Love's 'Age Of Love'. This song chugs along like a magical runaway train ride - through space! I it... Enjoy!

This is another standout track on the new '15 Years Of Drumcode' compilation - 'Running Backwards' from Southampton's Alan Fitzpatrick... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! &ME!

SummersRadio™ New Music! &ME - 'Glaced' (Original Mix) &ME is an artist/ dj/ producer based in Berlin who's just released his latest EP called 'Purple Rain' on the Keinemusik label! The EP features two tracks - 'Purple Rain' and 'Glaced' - and both are in interesting mix of house, techno and minimal. The title track is also good (and not related to Prince!) but it's the b-side that's won me over here.

'Glaced' begins at a chilled pace - gradually adding some sustained keyboard sounds and undiscernable background chatter - that gives it a nice loose three dimensional feel. The song then changes directions a few times - switching back and forth between two rather hypnotic and relaxing, but still driving grooves - that together form a rather excellent Stoner House™ tune... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! VCMG! (Vince Clarke & Martin Gore)

SummersRadio™ New Music! VCMG (Vince Clarke & Martin Gore) - 'Spock' (Original Mix)/ (Edit Select Remix) I'm sure that I wasn't the only Depeche Mode fan that thought it was a bit odd that Vince Clarke remixed their song 'Behind The Wheel' earlier this year for their 'Remixes 2: 81 - 11' release. Why would he suddenly choose to be involved with a band he left 30 years prior? Well it makes a bit more sense now - as Vince Clarke and Martin Gore have announced that they will be releasing a techno album together in the new year under the moniker VCMG!

The first taste of the album has been released this week in the form of 'EP 1: Spock' which is currently available exclusively on Beatport (in some parts of the world) and is set for a full release on December 12th - both digitally and on vinyl. The 'Spock' EP features five tracks (four on the 12") - the 'Original Mix' plus remixes from Edit Select aka Tony Scott, Karl O'Connor, DVS1 aka Derek VanScoten, and XOQ aka Uberzone - who also produced their debut album, which is due for release in the spring. It will be interesting to see how this project does sales wise. It's quite possible that it may remain somewhat underground appealing to mostly hardcore DM fans - but just imagine if these two decided to tour together - how massive would that show be?!

Apparently Vince Clarke had been listening to a lot of 'minimal dance music' and decided last year that he wanted to make a techno album. He sent Gore an e-mail asking if he'd be interested in collaborating and they began at first via e-mail while working in their respective studios, and they eventually met in person to discuss the project at a festival they were both performing at in London in May.

A techno album is certainly no big stretch musically speaking for either artist - as both gentlemen have had massively successful careers releasing largely keyboard based music for three full decades - both starting with Depeche Mode and then later with Yaz and Erasure for Clarke. While the origin of techno often points to Detroit in the mid to late 80's, one can listen to any number of Depeche Mode remixes around this same time period (and even prior to it) and hear many similar sounds.

So how does the first EP sound? Well it's a bit like Depeche Mode (shocker!) but without any conventional pop song structures - or vocals - so a lot like some of DM's remixes then! This is the first single from VCMG - 'Spock' - let's begin with the 'Original Mix' ... Enjoy!

This is the 'Edit Select Remix' - it's a bit darker and simplistic - and sounds like it would be well suited for late night highway driving, use in a film soundtrack, or for having sex to :) ... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Bass Kleph!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Bass Kleph - 'Riff Machine' (Mladin Tomic Remix)/ (Original Mix) I was commenting on some of itunes dubious new releases earlier, but of course no one music download site is perfect. You know it's nearing December and there are fewer new releases coming out when Beatport's new list of '10 Must Hear Techno Tracks' only features 9 songs! And truth be told, you don't really need to hear any of them. After listening to them I thought what we need is a new track from Umek and 1605 to liven things up - and as luck would have it I soon spotted this brand new exclusive track from Bass Kleph on 1605 - and it's awesome! But while Beatport certainly wins in the exclusive electronic new release category, of course itunes is about half the price for most songs.

So if you use both sites you know that if a new release is exlusive to Beatport it will usually (but not always) arrive on itunes two or three weeks later. So the question is - do you buy the track on Beatport for $2.49 now, or wait a few weeks until it's 99 cents on itunes? Of course that depends on the track in question - for me, if I really like a song, I must own a copy chop-chop!

Bass Kelph's new 'Riff Machine' EP features three versions of the title song - the 'Original Mix', the 'Mladen Tomic Remix', and the 'Hertz Remix'. I like all three versions - I checked out the 'Original Mix' first - and it won me over pretty quick with it's amazing production and wicked keyboard sounds. But then I checked out the 'Mladen Tomic Remix' and I think I might just like it even more - there are fewer keyboard hooks, but the bassline sounds a bit different and it has more swagger to it. I dig the 'Hertz Remix' too, but I've decided that I must buy the first two mixes now, and I can wait until the 'Hertz Remix' is on itunes to get it cheaper! :)

So first we have the second track on the 'Riff Machine' EP - this remix is by Mladen Tomic - a dj/ producer from Banja Luka Bosnia... Enjoy!

This is the also great 'Original Mix' of 'Riff Machine'... Enjoy!
