SummersRadio™ Music News! Underworld - 'Rez'/ 'Why Why Why' Underworld have just announced that they will be the official Music Directors of the opening ceremonies for London's 2012 Summer Olympic games! And - they're also releasing two new compilations next month!

The duo will work with British filmmaker and producer Danny Boyle (who's been appointed as the Artistic Director of the opening ceremonies) and will be responsible for all the music featured in the three hour ceremony happening on July 27th (my birthday!) 2012. Underworld have collaborated with Danny Boyle numerous times over the years - starting with his 1996 film Trainspotting which prominently featured their songs 'Born Slippy' and 'Dark Train'. Underworld have also provided music for his films 'A Life Less Ordinary', 'The Beach' and 'Sunshine' - and last year they collaborated on the British National Theatre production of 'Frankenstein'.

Karl Hyde says that their goal will be 'to leave people with a musical memory of the show rather than a purely visual one. It's a great honour to be asked to do this and one we're taking very seriously'. I'm not a big fan of the Olympic games - having endured many of the associated hassles of hosting the games first hand here in Vancouver last year - but I suspect that I'll still be tuning in to this one just for the music!

Before I get into the tracklist details of their two new compilations let's revisit one of their finest songs - this is 'Rez'... Enjoy!



Underworld are releasing two new compilations on January 23rd - one called 'Anthology 1992 - 2012' - and one called 'A Collection'. 'A Collection' will be a single disc set featuring 16 songs spanning their lengthy career - including three new '2011 Edits' of older tracks. 'Anthology 1992 - 2012' is essentially an update of their 2003 double cd compilation '1992 - 2002' but with a bit of a twist. The tracklisting has been changed - leaving out some of their lesser known songs in favor of newer singles - and a third bonus disc of previously unreleased tracks and rarities has been added!

SummersRadio™ STARTLEFEST 2011 Halloween Spectacular Continues! Savage Progress - 'My Soul Unwraps Tonight' (12" Extended Version) So if we are honest enough to accept our own immortality, then it's only natural to wonder what becomes of us when our physical self dies. To quote C.S. Lewis 'You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body' - so where does this soul go afterwards? Why wait until you're dead to find out - perhaps Halloween is a good time to take your soul out for a test drive as it were!

London's Savage Progress were together for less than three years between 1982 and 1985 - 'My Soul Unwraps Tonight' became an underground hit in 1984. I think it suits Halloween as it speaks of souls - but it also has an interesting, almost other worldy feel to the music. The song was written by bass player/ vocalist Rik Kenton - a former member of Roxy Music.

'My Soul Unwraps Tonight' has a bit of a reggae feel - truth be told I originally mistyped Halloweed instead of Halloween earlier in this post - an idea for a new sub-holiday perhaps? :) This song itself is rare - but here's the even rarer '12" Extended Version' of 'My Soul Unwraps Tonight'... SummersRadio™ Rarity! Underworld - 'Second Hand' Underworld's 'Second Hand' first appeared as a b-side in 1994 - released only in Germany and Denmark! It was originally titled 'Thing In A Book' - clocking in at 20:14! It was the second song on the 6 track Danish cd for 'Dark & Long' and it was also released on the two part German 12" for 'Dark & Long' - listed as 'Dark & Long' (Thing In A Book Mix). It was then re-edited and shortened down to 9 minutes long - and retitled 'Second Hand' when it was released on the very first Cafe Del Mar compilation, which also came out in 1994. If you're able to hunt it down, I highly recommend the Danish 'Dark & Long' cd on April Records - at over 72 minutes long it's almost like a full length remix cd! This is one of Underworld's lesser known but finest songs... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Curve - 'I Feel Love' This version of Donna Summer's 1977 disco/ electronic classic produced by Giorgio Moroder was hard to find for many years as it was initially only released on the limited edition 3cd set called 'Ruby Trax' - which was released in celebration of the NME's 40th anniversary! It was released in 1992 and featured 40 of the coolest artists at the time doing a cover of their favorite number one song of the last 40 years! It was an amazing compilation but it's long out of print, however the song can now be found on Curve's double best of collection called 'The Way Of Curve 1990/ 2004' - Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Rarity! Metric - 'It's A Sin' One of my current favorite bands covers a song by one of my all time favorite artists - and I like it... go figure!! This is currently unreleased and was performed as part of a live cover session for the European music streaming company Spotify. Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Rarity! Junkie XL Featuring Robert Smith!

SummersRadio™ Rarity! Junkie XL featuring Robert Smith - 'Perfect Blue Sky' Robert Smith's latest collaboration with Crystal Castles is by no means his first foray into electronic music - in 2004 he recorded 'Da Hype' with Junior Jack as well as a remix of 'A Forest' with Blank & Jones. My favorite of his electronic collaborations is probably the least known - a track he co-wrote (and sang vocals on) with Junkie XL in 2003 - no doubt due in part to the fact that the cd it's from 'Radio JXL: A Broadcast From The Computer Hell Cabin' is now out of print. The only clip I could find was on Soundcloud BUT please note that this song and the original album is still available for purchase on itunes for cheap ($9.99 for 19 tracks - it also includes songs with Dave Gahan, Peter Tosh, Gary Numan and Chuck D)...
