Grandaddy's Jason Lytle and Aaron Espinoza (of Earlimart) have released a new soundtrack to the film 'This Is Your Day'! 'This Is Your Day' is a film directed by Myles Smythe about long distance running - the experience of conquering a 100 mile race called 'The Western States Endurance Run'.
And in other Grandaddy news Jason Lytle mentioned on Twitter yesterday that he's currently working on a new Grandaddy album - their first since disbanding after the release of 'Just Like The Fambly Cat' in 2006!
The soundtrack to 'This Is Your Day' features eleven tracks - mostly instrumental - although a couple songs feature samples - and one called 'On And On (Drumset Version)' that features vocals by Jason Lytle. Jason Lytle is producing Band Of Horses forthcoming new album, so that's how 'Hang An Ornament' came about. It's a Christmas song - a subtle yet beautiful one. It doesn't try to brainwash you to feel fake joy - it reminds you to hang in there. I reckon the holiday season for many (myself included) is more about survival than anything else. No, it's not the most wonderful time of the year for everyone - it can also be the loneliest, saddest, most depressing time of year.
Sometimes you just need something to hang on to - and Grandaddy & Band Of Horses will be there for us for the holidaze... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! In other Grandaddy news Jason Lytle - who's now based in Portland - has released a new live album under his own name called 'House Show'. 'House Show' is a live solo recording made in a friends living room on May 19th, 2014 - his first live show in Portland. SummersRadio™ New Music! Jason Lytle - 'Your Final Setting Sun'
Jason Lytle has just released a new song (and premiered the video) called 'Your Final Setting Sun' online today! 'Your Final Setting Sun' is from the Grandaddy frontman's second solo album called 'Dept. Of Disappearance' which is released October 16th on the ANTI- label. The final date of Grandaddy's European tour was just last night in London and lucky for us he's wasted no time in focusing back on his solo work. No word yet if this is an official single or not, but skateboarder/ artist/ filmmaker Mike Aho has made an official video for it. Lytle describes the song to Rolling Stone as "a kind of fast-paced Western synth rock song."
'Your Final Setting Sun' is certainly worthy of being a single - I dig the synths - and it's almost rowdy compared to some of the rockier songs from his debut solo album 'Yours Truly, The Commuter' (which I loved - so this one could be even better!). This fun video features a brainwashing cult and one young man who escapes... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ New Music! Jason Lytle - 'Dept. Of Disappearance'/ Grandaddy - 'He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot'
Jason Lytle has just released a new song online called 'Dept. Of Disappearance'! When I first heard that Lytle had reformed Grandaddy for a number of mostly European festival shows this summer, I was a bit confused - as it was he who broke up the band in 2006. It also seemed like he was due for a follow up to his debut solo album - 2009's 'Yours Truly, The Commuter'. What was my most favorite indie rock singer/ songwriter thinking - how much longer would I have to wait for a follow up album now - and why did he reform Grandaddy?
It turns out that the Grandaddy reformation started as just a one off show in San Francisco, but once word got out about this other festival offers naturally started pouring in. So beginning next week Grandaddy play four shows in California followed by a month of dates in Europe. Here's the full itinerary if you're lucky enough to live close by one of the shows - if I had the money I'd drive down to California and go to all four - and then fly to London for the last one!

In a recent interview with MTV's Hive Lytle had this to say regarding the possibility of recording new Grandaddy material: "You know what? I have all these songs that I work on over the years. Things come and go and I do definitely sock stuff away. Just mental notes to self, like, “Yeah, man this reminds me of something that could be considered a Grandaddy song.” There’s some stuff, and I think primarily, the more introspective things, I think is more what I consider my own stuff. I’ve actually amassed enough stuff …I’ve been fantasizing about the idea of making another Grandaddy record and making something that I’m going to make sound like a Grandaddy record. Guilty pleasure, kitchen-sink stuff."
Even better than this great news is that we don't have to wait long for his second solo album - as 'Dept. Of Disappearance' will be released on October 16th on the ANTI- label - and he's just released the title track online this week!
'Dept. Of Disappearance' combines a number of Lytle's common themes - escaping, feeling lost, and of course the beauty of nature. The lyrics set the mood in the first half of the song, allowing you to drift along to the music and perhaps imagine what it might be like to plan your own disappearance in the second half... Enjoy!
Bonus Track! Since Grandaddy is touring this month it's only fitting to feature one of their finest songs today as well. I believe 'He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot' from their 2000 release 'The Sophtware Slump' to be one of the most stunning epic album opening tracks ever recorded... Enjoy!

SummersRadio™ Special Dedication To Mike Grefner - Today's post is a special dedication to Vancouver/ Whistler dj Mike Grefner aka Vs Zero. Mike went missing three weeks ago today, and was last seen at Garfinkles night club in Whistler on January 16th.
Mike is around six-foot-two and 180 pounds, with curly brown hair, green eyes, and stubbly facial hair. He was last seen wearing faded jeans with crosses stitched on the back pockets, a navy blue T-shirt and a black military-style hat.

There are a few things I know about Mike Grefner - one is that he is very intelligent and always has a positive attitude, and another is that he is very fit. He is strong both mentally and physically - so Mike - whether your disappearance has been by accident, force, or by choice - you need to gather up all your smarts, strength, and courage to remain strong to survive and fight back, and find your way home safe and sound very soon. Your family and literally thousands of friends miss you.
This is a song from Jason Lytle (formerly of Grandaddy) called 'You Can Do It' (Piano Version 1) that was released last year for the Japanese earthquake/ tsunami benefit compilation called 'Resume'. Grandaddy were an indie rock band from Modesto California that were together from 1992 - 2006. They released four studio albums - along with several self released albums, compilations and EP's. 'The Sophtware Slump' was their second studio album and was released in May 2000. It's considered by some to be a concept album about the problems with modern technology in society. I believe it to be that and much more - while Radiohead's 'Ok Computer' reflected the themes of pre-millenium tension, Grandaddy's 'Sophtware Slump' was the first release of the new millenium to reflect life after NYE 1999 - the opening track on the album 'He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot' features the lyrics 'How's it goin' 2000 man? Welcome back to solid ground my friend'.
The indie music magazine 'Under The Radar' ranked 'The Sophtware Slump' at number 15 on it's Best Albums of the Decade list for 2000-2009. While it would be a tough list to make, it would also rank in my top 10 albums of all time! So while there are no further details as yet on what the new deluxe edition will include - I present here a revisit to the beauty of 'The Sophware Slump'.
The album features two tracks about Jed - an alcoholic robot. Jed was first introduced in a song called 'Jeddy 3's Poem' on their rare 1999 EP called 'Signal To Snow Ratio' - which was included on a 2cd limited edition of 'The Sophtware Slump' - hopefully this new deluxe edition will feature those four tracks as well. This is a fan made video for the album track 'Jed's Other Poem (Beautiful Ground)' which was made with a vintage 1979 Apple computer... Enjoy!

The boxed set includes 2 albums and two cd's - one each of the regular album and one each of instrumental versions of each track - along with an assortment of photo prints, cards, a poster and a booklet of David Lynch's photography. The book version came out first - and was limited to 5,000 copies as well - along with a poster and a blank cdr - fans were encouraged to download the music off the interweb while it was tied up in litigation! Along with David Lynch, former Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle is the only artist to feature on two songs on the album. This is 'Jaykub' featuring the photos of David Lynch... Enjoy!
