SummersRadio™ New Music! David Bowie - 'Where Are We Now?'
I hope you've enjoyed our two Best Of 2012 countdowns - the Top 25 Rock/ Pop & Indie tracks and the Top 25 Electronic/ Club tracks & Remixes of the year! I'd say that we wrapped up just in time too, as there's one piece of music news today that's perhaps bigger than all of today's other musical announcements combined. Today is David Bowie's 66th birthday - and to celebrate he's released a brand new single - his first in ten years!
'Where Are We Now?' (available now on itunes) is the first single from his forthcoming album - his 24th - called 'The Next Day', which will be released on March 11th in the U.K. & Europe and ahem, the next day in North America, on his own Iso Records label.
So far there are two digital editions available for pre-order on itunes - with the standard version featuring 14 tracks and a deluxe version that will feature 17. There's no official word yet on any physical releases.
This is the cover art for 'The Next Day' - a rather oddly updated version of his 1977 album 'Heroes':
Pretty much everyone on the world wide web is jumping for joy over this song - but it's not a rousing comeback or anything. 'Where Are We Now?' is a rather subdued affair - it actually sounds quite sad - and though he makes references to Berlin, Bowie actually sounds a bit lost.
So I wonder how much of this excitement is for an unexpected new song from a musical hero to many - and how much is strictly for the song itself. I reckon it will take a few more days - and listens - for myself and others to fully decide. So here we have David Bowie's brand new single produced by Tony Visconti - and the full length new video directed by Tony Oursler... Enjoy!
